San Diego, Dec. 27

New to TE so forgive me if this question has been brought up before...my husband and I will be traveling to the San Diego area around Dec. 27 and we would love to ride. Does anyone have an idea of what the weather would be like at that time and also some good ideas on where to ride? We have road bikes and actually prefer to ride on roads but trails are good too.

Hi Vroom... fingers crossed the weather will be good. Last year on Xmas eve I rode a century with my brother... and it was 70 degrees out. So far this year it is staying warmer than it normally is this late... as a matter of fact today was 94 degrees. Yeah. 94.

Which area of SD will you be in? I know lots of different routes in many areas... a very popular route is the coast... tons of riders pretty much all the time... I live in East County and know some great climbing routes out here too, if you are climbers (I'm not, but hey, it's good training right? LOL)

Anyway, lemme know where you'll be and I'll give you some better ideas where to start and where to go to... anything from an easy 25 mile flat loop to a 42 mile loop with just over 4800 ft climbing to a 60 miler with a bit of everything...

I'll be staying on Moore Street in San Diego. I've been doing some research and found a "Sea to Sea" trail. Do you know of it? Any good? However, I did read that about 75% of the trail has been destroyed by wild fires. Any less-traveled 2 lane roads with not a lot of hills that you know of? I'm not a big fan of climbing either!

We in So Cal call San Diego the promised land... the weather there is usually... PERFECT! Of course, it does rain in So Cal and around Christmas that's a possibility but generally it's cool (around 60's), alittle overcast and nice.

Looks of good riding in San Diego. Bikercheck should be able to give you some nice routes.

Hi Vroom... OK... one great flat ride is the Silver Strand on Coronado. It's 15 miles out and 15 back if I recall... there is a loop you can do around the island as well... great places to stop for lunch etc... it you ride there be SURE to visit Hotel Del Coronado. Very famous... it's where the President stays when he's in town (no matter who Pres is!) and the Christmas display is amazing.

Fiesta Island is also a regular ride spot for many... not sure how far it is all the way around, but you have a view of the water no matter which way ya go... I think you could extend it by doing several loops.

from where your staying, which is an area called Point Loma, you could also go up to Cabrillo National Monument. This would involve some climbing, but nothing steep... just a few miles of it...

I still think the coast is one of the best rides... if you avoid N Torrey Pines Rd, the climbing is very minimal, there are TONS of other cyclists at any given time on the road there, and lots of places to eat. There's something fun about riding along and watching the surfers catch waves...

It's stayed warm very late... still in the 80's! So heaven only knows what Dec will bring...
