Plan wineries portion @bike trip end, not beginning

Dearie is cycling by himself in Provence, France right now. (And no I don't have enough vacation time to join him.)
So after landing in Paris, he takes train out to Dijon. Now, he didn't research this advance and discovers he is in the heart of the Burgundy wine country area.

And he was passing through famed wineries that sold the creme de la creme of red wines @$500.00 Can per bottle. Sheesh.
Because he will be cycling for the next 10 days, he can't have a bottle of wine weighing down his panniers.

Morale of the story: research abit where you are cycle-touring in advance. Plan bike trip so that the tail end of trip, will include wineries, not the front end of the trip.

Would LOVE to be riding through wine country in France (we actually have friends who own a house in the south/central France (mmm, Chateauneuf du pape region).

Hey, 7rider, a visit to see friends for 1-2 days would be worthwhile in France while moving onto other country sights.

lrulan: I realize they ship. But international shipping is incredibly expensive from Europe. Dearie shipped conference material to Canada from the UK..and it costed him over $30.00-$50.00 just for a binder of content!

We're not wine connesseiurs (wrong spelling), just around to see local, good stuff at moderate prices. In Germany and in France, also the farmers sometimes have their own wines at the local farmers' market. Not as good probably. But still for a picnic, etc.

It was just a killer when we were cycling at the beginning of our trip in 2010, in southern Germany in a medieval town where the local regional wine store had fab. German local white wines under $10-$15.00 euro. This is near the area where he was born. We did cycle through the famous Rhine River valley wine region of Germany, yes with the vineyards, etc. The whole region approx. 50-60 kms. from the French border. That region doesn't seem to have as many tasting rms. compared to the Burgundy area in France.

Then in Czech Republic there were of course the Czech wines, which the red wines are worth trying...from the Moravian region. But no, it just wouldn't have been practical with more cycling ahead in Denmark, a place that doesn't produce wines.

Dearie restrained himself (enormously) from not dropping by the wine tasting rms. simply because he feared he would become dehydrated and sleepy. After cycling 90 kms. in 25 degrees C heat, with a headwind half of the time at 30-40 km./hr. winds, eating snacks and drinking 2 litres of water (and no wine sips) he was dehydrated and ready to fall asleep when we skyped.
