Web based photo albums

I tried Photobucket but couldn't upload anymore after the first time.

Flickr seems good but I don't really want to pay for anything.

I've heard Yahoo photo albums are going to be discontinued.

Any recommendations for a user friendly site so I can put photos here without attaching them?

You could get your own domain. We use GoDaddy to host ours. It's not free. But it lets us put up whatever content we want.

Flickr is free up to 100 MB of bandwidth a month... it's actually run by Yahoo now, which is probably why the Yahoo photoalbums are being discontinued (just my guess).

I've used it for a few months now, but ended up having TONS of travel photos, so I "upgraded" to the unlimited version and paid for a year of service.

I think it's the best amature photo-hosting site, personally... I don't like how people who want to view your photos have to log in to the other services to see them (ie: snapfish, kodak). And I like all of the community stuff Flickr has (and the automatic blog posting!).

Don't know why you've had a problem with Photobucket. I've been using it for the last couple of years and have at least 200 photos on it.

What was happening when you couldn't upload i.e. what did it do?

It does sometimes seem to take ages to upload especially at times when there's high internet traffic.

On Photobucket it worked fine the first time.
When I tried to upload more their was no tab with that option, I read their help section about four times.

You could always try the google version.

Go to the google homepage & create an account.
They have a free programme called Picasa. From there you can organise the photos on your computer & create web albums.
I've been fiddling around with the programme for a few days & it seems to doing the job.
Best of all - it has a 1Gb of free storage.

Zencentury. OK step by step.

Log into Photobucket.

When the page comes up you should have a main album. If there isn't an album, you need to create one. This should come up as "Main Album". You can then make sub-albums by typing in the new sub-album title (e.g. I have a lot of snakes as pets so would use Pythons 2007, Boas 2007 etc.).

To put pics in your chosen album, at the top right hand corner of the page you will see a box marked "Upload to: (whatever your chosen album is called).

Under that there are 3 little boxes with "browse" at the end of them. Click on browse and choose whichever path on your computer your pics are stored on. Select the pic you want to upload and click "Open". The path will show in the little box. Move to the next box and do the same. Once you have selected the pics click "Upload"...and be patient. It does take a few minutes depending on internet traffic.

If you need to upload more than 3 pics there is a facility at the bottom of the box which says "Add more". This brings up about 10 browse boxes.

To post your pics on the forum just click once on the URL link and it will automatically copy your pic. Go back to the forum and click the "Insert Image" box. Delete the HTTP:// that comes up automatically and just put the cursor in the box and right-click the mouse button and select "Paste". The URL of your pic will be inserted. Then click "OK" and your pic will show as the URL. When you've finished posting your pics, just click "Submit Reply" as normal and your pics will show on your post.

I absolutely LOVE Picasa from Google. picasa.google.com

I love the way it organizes the photos, and then you can click on "export" and it will automatically resize it to whatever format you want to upload it to (web, email, whatever).

I also like that you can add a caption right to the photo without having to save and adjust and click on something extra, etc. It's way cool.

Then there's webshots (expensive) but then there's Shutterfly.
Shutterfly is awesome, why? because you can make the coolest books ever
and they are great gifts! we made one from our last big Italy trip for our own keepsake. Then we changed a few of the pictures (easy to do) and sent a copy to our friends who were so kind to us while we were there.

I use Photobucket, but my father-in-law uses Picasa. He is completely clueless with computers, so it must be extremely user friendly. He also photos everything, so it must have a lot of storage?

I have never used a web-based photo album

This thread combined with my daughter moving out of home plus the photos I take for our club make me think maybe I should.

I also have another deciding thing... I took pix of our bikes a couple of weeks ago... I have a "normal" or "old-fasioned" (choose description based on your age) SLR camera, so when I get the film developed and printed, I also get all photos onto CD.

So I went to upload the pix of my two racing bikes, and the files are waaaaay too big to attach into TE

So, down-sizing is not an option, I tried and they just look rubbish

If I had them in an online album, would attaching them still be a problem or would it be 'no worries' because I am only linking to another web-site, not caching the actual photos in TE??

RoadRaven, I don't downsize photos when I upload photos to an online album like Photobucket. I think it will do it for you. You can then link to photos in TE and it does the resizing or whatever it needs.

However, this doesn't mean that when your photos are uploaded to the online album that the same degradation of quality won't occur. Try one of the free services (such as photobucket) and run some tests. Won't cost you anything but time.

PS -- all the above said on my very limited experience.

I think you'll find picasa easy to use and it gives you the option of saving a copy. You can keep one at the original size in case you ever want to print it and you can resize the copy for web viewing
