It takes a tremendous amount of strength and cardio fitness to drive a road race car. That qualifies it as a sport in my book, regardless of the fact that the personal gear worn by the drivers obviously isn't the highest expenditure in the sport.

Personally I could care less about four-wheel racing, but I wouldn't dis the athletes. Indy car (or F1 or even sportscars) is not NASCAR.
