hi all/responding to Jermaine's question
I checked out this thread again now that my morning ride is in the dark again, and evening ride will soon be in the dark!

Congrats on the riding and lifestyle change! Enjoy your new bike!
I have two custom champion jerseys and wear a men's large (I am not tall but am curvy). I normally wear a women's large or medium in voter, so yes, the champions run small and leave less room for...
It's this coming Wednesday May 9 for us. I'm riding in with a large group ride again this year- last year, the group had a few hundred riders. Can't wait
Wow, I'm feeling very impressed with the hardcore commuters on this list who are riding in despite cold winter conditions. Feeling a bit guilty on my end for letting a little California "chill" and...
Thanks for all of the suggestions! I currently have a niterider mininewt mounted on my drop bars and a cateye red rear light mounted on my tool bag. I definitely want to improve side visibility as...
Apologies if this has been covered recently, but I've been riding in in the dark in the am, and once the time changes, will be riding home in the dark in the pm. I have a primarily urban commute and...
Great blog and amazing journey! I look forward to hearing more as you make your way across the country!
Re the specialized 44 vs 48 , they do not look all that different when you look at the frame geometries (stack and reach are only about 1cm smaller on the 44). So you might want to give that a try.

Next purchase: thinking about a new helmet and resisting the urge to get a new bike (I kind of want a geeky randonneur bike with a front rack)
Last purchase: chrome backpack for commuting
I rode home today with my giant brick-like laptop in my chrome backpack (along with clothes and other miscellany), and while the pack did a great job with the load in terms of feeling balanced and...
We had a great morning for a ride yesterday and I rode with a group estimated at 400 at the start, though the red lights broke up the groups along the way. I've been riding to work a few times a...
Kelleil- yes, talking about SF2G, but I only go to SSF. I'm generally a bit too slow at the moment for style 3 SF2G but I've been doing the FFFF (first Friday friendly frolic) for the last few months...
I realized this morning that the SF Bay area's BTWD is a week ahead of the national WTWD (moved because the Tour of California is going through SF that week!) , so that's why everyone else seems to...
I don't commute to a dressy office, but I do commute in cycling clothes and carry my work clothes in a pack. To reduce the amount of stuff that I carry while riding, I leave my work shoes at the...
I had a bad mtb accident a few years ago-- no hospitals, but the crash itself was hugely terrifying (long fall into a ravine) and I busted up my knee and recovery from that has taken a few years--...
I'm riding both ways. In the am, I am joining a giant group ride that draws a few hundred people on BTWD. In the pm, riding back to SF with co-workers. About 12 miles each way.
Who else is riding...
So, updating my last post: I've managed to keep up some momentum with the commuting and have managed to ride to work two or three times a week each week. Mostly, I take the more direct route, which...
I am a recent re-convert to bike commuting- I commuted primarily by bike for about ten years, but since moving to the SF Bay area quite a while ago, I've mostly walked to work, or (last 10 years),...
So sorry to hear about your accident. Crutches and casts are a pain! I had foot surgery several years ago and was on crutches for almost two months. Here's a few suggestions
-showers: I love my...
I'm also using strava, which I enjoy even though I am super slow climbing these days. Still pretty good on the descents, but trying not to let strava rankings influence my riding style on the...
I second the recommendation to talk to Donnie or someone at his shop (Maui cycles in Paia). My bf climbed Haleakala in September and the guys at the shop provided good info on where to get water...
Hi there, thanks for the comments. Yes, the trip is soon - we leave on Sunday! Im very excited but a bit nervous about the horrible cold I've developed from Xmas travel. It better clear up before the...
Thanks for all of the advice! And excellent tip about the ozone. I am one of those burn-under-any-circumstances type people and I will definitely get the arm protectors.
thanks for the added input. Millford is indeed booked up thru March but we will try to do day hike on millford and/or routeburn- both look incredible. The Akaroa route does look pretty climby- we'll...
