OK, Now the heat is REALLY getting to me!

I got up this morning to howling winds and the sound of thunder, so I put off my ride. At 8:00 am it had blown through but it was a whopping 104!
I just checked to see if I could get an eveing ride in....

MAN!!! And I didn't even get my swim in today!! This just Stinks!!! At least I won't be over trained for my race next weekend! UGH!!!! :

100F is my limit. Anything over that... and I'm on a spin bike.

Too bad you couldn't hit a pool or a lake for some swimming though.

I don't know how you do it either! I last 10 months living in Az. and I couldn't handle the heat. Of course, I'll be visiting my parents and in-laws once it cools down and I can't wait to ride out there. :cool:

I haven't been out on my bike down here in at least three weeks. It's just too miserable. I commend you for doing as much as you do in this heat!

Ugh. It's 95 degrees at 7 pm.:(

80-85 is my limit. Got heat exhaustion once, I don't want to do that again!

Right after I posted that I stepped outside and said to myself "ehhhh.. It's not THAT bad, I think I'll give it a go".
So I told Tony I was going for a ride, threw on my shorts, jog bra, the coolest top I could find (read: MESH) filled the camelbak and out I went. It was HOTTTTTTTT... But not so bad. The sun sets here around 7:30 so I had my blinkys on after about a half hour, even chatted with a mtn biker about some local trails on the way back in. I tried to take a picture of the sunset but my camera is dead. Must be a casualty of the dust storm.. ugh...:confused:
Just came in after a hot hour in the saddle, grabbed a fresh cool bottle of water, some ice for my neck- must cool down core- and I came up to check the weather.
Here she is... So I rode somewhere between 118 and this:

Sweat is pouring off me, not doing a dang thing but on to my 4th shower. :(

Gosh, I feel so lucky that it's only been in the low 100s here. :rolleyes: I've managed to start most of my rides when it's only in the 70s-80s and finish them when it's in the upper 90s...but that's in and around Park City (up "in the mountains")! I have been doing short rides (~30 mi) here in the Salt Lake Valley, mostly to make sure I stay acclimated to the heat. I'm doing OK with it, as long as I faithfully take my endurolytes and not ride like a madwoman. When I was out riding this morning I rode through the annual Utah Pioneer Day Marathon...BRUTAL! At least they started early (in the dark!) and most should have finished before the temp went over 90.

The thing that's been bothering me more than the heat is the pollution. My eyes burn all the time these days. :mad:

Running Mommy, Be careful out there after dark. I recently read in my newspaper that some people are not being very nice in the Phoenix area after the sun goes down at night.

Okay, I couldn't resist that last post! Great job Denise - I wish I had that much dedication! Its been about 112 over here and very humid; I start to have sweat run down my back just standing outside for a few minutes... I have not been on my bike much in this stuff :( There isn't really anywhere near my house to ride safely at night so I'm gonna try to ride tomorrow morning (at 9am though, so it might be pretty warm by then).

Can you see any actual heat damage/wear on your tires?... just curious

I ride in that too. My Pecos rout is steaming hot. On Sunday I thought that I would collapse considering that I am pregnant now. I did 26 miles and I was dizzy for the rest of the day. I guess I will spin indoors today and back on the road tomorrow at 5 am. Do we have a choice? Not until the end of September.

I didn't ride back when I was pregnant but I actually had to stop running. I lost what would have been Spencers twin, so my doctor put me on the "nothing more strenuous than walking" plan.. UGH!! That was the one thing I hated about being pregnant! I would look at runners longingly. But as soon as I could I was out w/ him strapped in the baby jogger- 6 weeks if I remember correctly. And I had a C-section!!

DH and i rode 34 miles yesterday, stopped twice at convenience stores just for water and ice in bottles, the water in the bottles goes from icy to just plain hot within about 20 minutes. and they're polar bottles! would get just to the brink of bonk and shovel in hammer gel to get another half hour. it's miserable. but here we get the best bike tans, don't we denise?????

Man do I feel like a wimp! Today was humid and a whopping 88 degrees so I declined to ride. I gotta get a stronger constitution! Of course, I don't think it's too cold to ride when it's 40 out ;) . We are expecting storms for the rest of the week. I really am getting out there to ride tomorrow. I rode across Michigan in late June and have been a slug since then. Shame on me!!!

Y'all are missing out on some great winter riding! It feels great to talk about it now, when it's so hot. Last winter, the coldest I rode in was 19F with a foot of snow (studded tires). As long as you have the right clothes, it's just plain fun (and the bike paths are completely YOURS!)

But back to the current heat...it's cooled off here, and is less humid than last week. I rode in 100F last Tuesday, but very slowly (commute from work). The pollution was bad, it was a Code Red day, but I tried not to work out too much, just get home. Things are better now, at least for the time-being.

Cooling in the Bay Area now, it's about time! I'm still not likely to bike to work this week because.....the A's have a major series of home games.

Last night I could hardly wiggle my elbows in the train much less fit a bike. High price of gas + home games = very crowded train. :)

Must research either safe route past the crowds at least from work to Fruitvale and or get a bike locker.

speaking of cold. i love riding in the snow. well the snow that just barely covers the road and is packed down and you can cruise quite fast. though when you hit a drift its not so good.

superfun last year was one of the lakes really froze over good and bf and i rode our bikes out on it and did the loop around. super fun. though i fell once when i first got out. who knew ice was so slippery. great core workout!

Oh, I wish we had some snow. But not here. I rode this morning at 5 am and it was only 92! Wow, what a relief. I actually felt good and so did my peanut in my belly. It seems like it is going to be cooler this week. I am very tired of spinning indoors!

I did a double take when I read your question Denise, but PinkBike's bike is a trek and Melisa's is something else (I totally forgot! :rolleyes: ).... It is a pretty close color match though...
