My family and I are going to be in the local mountains that weekend, but I think I'll plan to come down the night before to meet everyone for a ride in the morning. :)
You're going to drive down from Big Bear to ride??? Wow...that sounds like dedication in preparation for Cool Breeze...I guess you've made your decision. http://www.tinklebelle.com/Smilies/i...ughinghard.gifQuote:

Actually we'd be coming home on Sunday anyway, from Lake Gregory, so me leaving the night before won't be a big deal.
Aaaaaannnnddddd, even if I don't decide on Cool Breeze, I can still have dedication for other rides. Call it training in progress for a century I'm not signed up for yet. :p

Cool! Were we planning on riding a metric that day? I can't recall what we had decided on.
I'd love to do this sometime with the group. http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=2356 It's not quite a metric, but it has some climbing :) The first half is basically the route that Tiffanie and I did on Thursday and I altered it at the end to include the Shady Canyon path with that short but steep hill (though you can't see bike paths on there), Newport Coast and Spyglass, then looping back through Back Bay. It has a nice mix of trails and road riding and I'm sure that Pam could somehow tweak it so that we could take the Mt. to Sea Trail all the way up to Jamboree instead of cutting over in Irvine, but again, bike paths aren't shown on routeslip! That actually might cut a few miles off of the ride. I started the route in Newport only because it was nice to have a few miles on our legs before we hit the climbing on Jamboree and Santiago Canyon Road. Just a suggestion :)
A couple of suggestions...
We could do Brandy's ride although what I would like to do instead is start down at the sports park at Harvard and Walnut in order to get some warmup before hitting Jamboree/Santiago Canyon. If you all are in for hills, what we could do is add the Lemon Heights climbs (Tracy and Nina can fill you in) and then do Santiago Canyon and Newport Coast etc. This route would probably be a good 60+ miles with 4000'+ of climbing. ie very hilly. Also we could did this somewhat in reverse... leave from Tustin/Irvine, go down to Newport and then come back up the Aliso Creek trail to El Toro to Santiago Canyon, finish the Canyon and have the Jamboree downhill to end the ride.
Lastly, consider doing Santiago Canyon both ways...
Another option is do a ride from Irvine to Belmont Shores. It's about 65 miles.
I have another route that Jess did for me that starts with a Skyline climb (from the other side) does NC and then goes up to Huntington Beach and back.
I'm open to other options as well. Just let me know.
Pam, I thought about starting the ride closer to where you start your rides, but honestly after doing it on Thursday, Tiff and I needed that whole ride from Eastbluff up to our first hill at Jamboree to warm up. We both agreed that we wouldn't have been able to tackle that climbing had we started in Irvine...that's why I made the starting point at University/Jamboree (at the park with the bathroom so I can pee legally :D ) and not inland.
ETA: I loved the downhill taking Santiago from the direction that we did. It was nice to not have to be stopping at lights and it was so pretty!
If we don't do this on July 30th, I'm fine with it though. I just wanted to throw it out there as a suggestion.
I have no problem starting the ride down at the park by Eastbluff. My only concern is travel for everyone else. For us OC gals, the drive or ride is not bad but for Tracy, and the LA gals, much farther for them to come.
Tracy (and LA gals) the Park is located at Jamboree and University (actually just off) to get there best route would be take the 261 toll rd to Jamboree and continue down to University, turn left then immediately right (I can do directions later). This would give us a good warm up before the ride if we are tackling Jamboree/Santiago Canyon first.
Brandy the other option is to do the route backwards. Start at Cedar Grove, go South to Alton or Muirlands then here's a suggestion - look it up and see what you think... my Club usually does Bake Parkway, to Portola to Glenn Ranch and then left onto El Toro or the Aliso Creek bike trail. Do Santiago Canyon from East to West and then finish down Jamboree. The only icky problem I see with this option is if the ride runs late we do the Canyon in the heat but at least we are done after.
Otherwise if everyone's OK with Brandy's ride, let's do it. Brandy you lead! I'll probably be way in
the back once we hit Jamboree.
any starting point is fine w/me. I won't know until last minute whether I can get childcare though :(
I totally want to do this ride so I'm going to start begging the neighbors! What time are we starting? IF I can get childcare, I will probably be able to leave no later than 6:45am from here....
T~
It's up to Brandy and everyone but would 8 work for you? I guess we can start as soon as everyone is there and ready.
I have a tentative "yes" on the childcare so I could be there by 8... I think I know pretty much where it is... I had to take 261/Jamboree down to the airport area for a course last month, so I'm thinking its similar to the starting point. I would plan on leaving at 6:45 so I'm sure I'll be on time :p
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the childcare will "hold" if ya know what I mean!!!
Trac'
Tracy and all - I'll try and get the name of the park I'm thinking of and the exact street location for all and get it posted before July 30. The parking area is around the back of the park. There are nice restrooms and it's just an easy ride to University and the bike trail. I'm assuming we have all decided to do Brandy's ride? Sounds good to me.
any route is great for me. My babysitter just confirmed so unless something happens and she has to cancel, I'll be there! YEAH!!!!!
T~
Hi!
I will have to let you all know closer to the date.
With the drive there and back and the ride, It will be a full day for me.
Not sure if I can be gone ALL DAY especially on a Sunday.
But I will confirm for sure before the 30th!
Thanks!
Karen
Karen:
Hope you can make it but to be honest it will be a long day. Our rides have been on the slower side. If we do about 60+ miles I figure it may be a 6 - 8 hour ride. Count in car travel time, sag stops etc. probably closer to 10 hours for you.
Hoe long did it take you to do your metric?
But then again if committed to Cool Breeze - just needs to be done.
Hi Pam!Quote:

Most likely I will have to pass on this one...
Hopefully next time! If I don't meet you before then, I am looking forward to meeting you at Cool Breeze!!!!
Thanks!
K :)
I am going to block off this date, I am probably available to join you.

I think that an optional loop of Back Bay will finish the day for those who want to do a metric.
Tiffanie and I will preview the ride on the 20th, since that's the day we're scheduled to do a metric anyway and I'll scout out someplace to stop and eat in Mission Viejo. It's looking like this ride will have 4000+ feet of climbing, just FYI.
ETA: Tiff just sent me the Back Bay map and it adds about 9 miles, so it will be an option at the end of the ride for those who want to continue on.
Brandy... just me 2 cents... I wouldn't not consider Laguna Canyon Rd especially during Festival time. The road is very narrow, very busy and under construction (I for one avoid it at all cost in the summer)... Although from El Toro Rd. down from laguna Coast Wild. Park it's probably better but you still have to go by the Festival grounds and all that traffic. If you still decide to do that route, use Cliff Dr. - I can probably find a route slip (since my Club does that route alot) and send it along.
Personally I may not be up to a ride with Jamboree/Santiago Canyon/Moulton/El Toro/NPC from PCH etc. Way too much climbing in one day for me but I can always (cause thankfully I do know all the routes around OC) modify my route to prevent all of that climbing. Does your route maker show elevation gain?
i can relate with that, karen! sometimes i can convince hubby he needs to ride with me on organzed rides (or local rides) but he always has to slow down for me! he NEVER rides with me on the "important" ones! lol!Quote:

i've already warned him he has to ride the grand tour lite with me... cuz it was a bit lonely last year! lol! again.... i think cuz not too many do that route... so i end up behind!
Pam,
Good point about Laguna Canyon this time of year, I didn't even think about the Sawdust Festival. Can you tell how often I get down that way? :p
We can do something like the original route that I posted in here http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=2356 that includes Newport Coast, but could easily be skipped by those who would rather cut the ride short. Both routes were roughly 56-57 miles and included 4400 feet of climbing. With the addition of Back Bay on the tail end, those who want to do a metric can do so.
Brandy - if you guys still want to do the original route but add NC from PCH I can probably help with that.
Input this: From Cook's Corner/Aliso Creek trail take Glenn Ranch Rd to Portola to Bake. Bake to Muirlands, Muirlands to Alton to San Diego Creek trail to Eastbluff. Eastbluff across to Ford, Ford to San Miguel, San Miguel down to Poppy/5th St to PCH, PCH left to Newport Coast. NC to san Joaquin, back to Back bay, loop around to Dover and back to the start.
Sounds complicated and lord knows way more climbing than I'm capable of but this is doable, less traffic, good views and plenty of places to stop and snack also lots of bail outs if one (say me) just can't handle any more climbing.
That sounds great Pam! Isn't there a sizable shopping center on Portola and Bake? That might make a good stopping point for refueling.
Lots of stops along Portola and Bake. Nicer roads. More bike friendly. WOuld give you and Tiff another way to go since you already did the ride.
Cool. We'll preview it in a couple of weeks then and I'll look for a cycling friendly (lots of outdoor seating) coffee/sandwich place to stop at...unless you already know of a good place?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Darn I don't know the name but once you turn from Portola onto Bake, the next light (Auto Center Way), turn right then left and there's a food court with a nice coffee shop. I'll try and get the name this weekend. There are also Starbucks and all sorts of fast food around on Portola. I do know there is also a Starbucks at Bake and Trabuco but wrong side of street and if we go down to Murilands (or Jeronimo) then is a Starbucks on the corner.
Also since you are mapping this route - look for this - on Santiago Canyon before you drop down to Cook's Corner there is this road - I think it's called Ridgeline or Ridge Route, turn right, it's a very short but steep climb, turn right again at the summit and then you drop over and down on Glenn Ranch.
Okay...we didn't get to scout the first half (santiago canyon portion) of the ride, but since we've already done it, we have an idea of what to expect. Pam...I do have a question about where the SD Creek Trail meets Mt. to Sea and goes north toward Tustin. I was unsure of where that splits off and the trail isn't signed going that way, maybe you could help us out on that part.
We did do the second half of the ride and found some bail out points for those who want to avoid Newport Coast altogether and then another bailout point for those who don't want to do the final 9 miles, which will be a loop of Back Bay. I still need to route it to get the total mileage and elevation gains, but this ride will be all about hills!!! :D
Brandy - so I know this is your ride... but I just had a thought while I was riding around the other day. From the park near Back Bay...
Take Eastbluff to Ford (x Jamboree) to San Miguel, to L at San Joaquin, R on Marguerite, L at 5th, R at Poppy, L at PCH. Take PCH to Newport Coast, up and over to Bonita Canyon turn R at Shady Hill to the Shady Hill Bike Trail up and over to R at Quail Hill, round about to Laguna Canyon North (away from the festival towards the hills). OK I have to confirm this in my Thompson Guide but either to Barranca or Jeronimo to Bake, up Bake to Bake Parkway, R at Portola, L at Glenn Ranch. Note at Glenn Ranch and Portola is a Starbucks and several delis. Good time and place to stop.
Up Glenn Ranch to El Toro, L at El Toro past Cook's Corner to Santiago Canyon Blvd. Take the Canyon to Jamboree. Turn L at Jamboree up and down to Portola, turn L. R onto the Peter's Canyon Bike Trail. Take that to it ends at Harvard (just before Irvine Center Drive). Take Harvard to Barranca get on the San Diego Creek Trail, go South back to Eastbluff/University and the PArk. Those that feel up to it can tour Back Bay to add mileage (although frankly - this is a long tough ride as is).
NOTE: If we go the other way, then a good stopping point is still at the bottom of Glenn Ranch at Portola. We would ride right across the street to the Starbuck's.
Note to all: Either route is very hilly. I'm not certain how I will do but there are lots of bail outs along the way. For me best to get Newport Coast out of the way early cause later in the day I could see me going around it instead. Regardless, I will definitely be sweeping the rear of the group!
Take San Diego Creek to Harvard, exit Harvard go North to the Peter's Canyon Bike Trail. Take Peter's Canyon Bike trail to Portola, exit turn L. Take Portola to Jamboree, turn R and begin grinding up the hill.Quote:

I can usually "escape' a couple of Sunday's a year, by planning well in advance, but I can't do it that weekend.
Still waiting to get my triple. There is a lot involved with making the change on my bike (different bottom bracket, crank arms, shifter lever, etc., not to menton the $$$'s). I still plan on the Cool Breeze Metric and will try to get in some hills around here. I just bought one of the Sharper Image cooler thingies they advertise on TV that you put around your neck like a collar. They work with water and a little cooler fan of some sort. I haven't even taken it out of the box yet but I'll try it tomorrow and let you all know how it works. The heat really kills me.
Nina
Thanks for the info on the Peter's Canyon Trail Pam...Tiff and I are planning to ride Santiago Canyon one more time before the 30th, so we'll take that route.
As far as the ride on the 30th, I'd like to continue with what I've planned. Tiff and I worked on scouting it out this morning, including driving around Newport to some areas we missed by taking Newport Coast all the way down to PCH, and I think we have a really good ride shaping up.
As far as Newport Coast being at the end of the ride, I did that intentionally so that those who want to skip extra climbing can bail out and take SD Creek Trail back to the park. I think that we have several options to make everyone happy!
Oh...and we climbed N.C. from the Bonita side today and in my opinion the Jamboree/Santiago Canyon climbing was more challenging and that's why I'd like to get that out of the way earlier in the day before it heats up too much and while we still have energy!
Hey Brandy!
That route sounds PERFECT! I am totally looking forward to it; I'm dyin' to check out this whole Santiago Canyon thing..... be prepared to do lots of waiting! ;)
