I'm looking for a good running hat. I think my problem is my head is small, no hat seems to stay on if it is at all windy. Ideally, it would also have some venting at the crown since my races tend to have hot runs.
Any suggestions?

I wear Buffs for all workouts...they're great under my helmet and for running. They wick sweat really well and keep my scalp from burning.
Like you, I have a small head. I have a Nike hat that seems to run smaller (and shorter, from ears to crown) than others I've tried.
ETA: I think it's this one: http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-NWFLH.html.
I have an REI one that I hate. Would not recommend it unless you have a flat head. It rides up high and wings off at the - well - the drop of a hat.
I also have a HeadSweats hat. I like that one much better. Sits more securely on my head. It's vented on the sides and has survived many trips through the washing machine.
I just got a SweatVac hat in my goodie bag at yesterday's race. It fits okay, but I don't hold much hope for it, as it's not vented/mesh. I'll wear it to Wednesday's workout and see how it goes.
If you find the "perfect" running hat - let me know. I'm still looking! :p
I started running with a visor about a year ago and I don't think I'll ever go back. My head's pretty small too, but at its tightest setting the Saucony visor will mostly stay on, and it's fine with a BondiBand underneath.
I know you're supposed to protect your scalp - but my hair is pretty thick, and I've never burned there.
I surely remember those hot days when I'd pull my generously vented white mesh hat off every time I hit shade, just to let my head cool off.
I really liked Walz cycling caps so gave their Jack Rabbit caps a try for running. NICE. Wick and breathe well.
They come in two sizes, dry quick, easy wash, and the women's version has a pony tail port. Many hats blow off my head but these tend to stay on well. If you want a shorter bill go with the cycling cap (http://www.walzcaps.com/caps_moistur...hreepanel.html)

I have a tiny head. I used to love visors, but after having a basal cell off of the scalp I'm now wearing hats (most of the time).
I have two white hats that I have been able to wear in the heat. According to the guys at the LRS, most people don't like this hat because it's too shallow. So of course it fits my small head well:

It's my go-to hat. I'm wearing it in the pictures in my SP 50 thread.
This hat has a larger brim, which is kind of vented. Hard to explain. It fits well, maybe not as well as the HVAC hat but still a keeper. It is a little deeper:

I throw them both in the washing machine and air dry. They have been through a lot and seem to be holding up well.
I did just get one of these. I don't really plan to run in it, got it more for less strenuous outdoor activities, but I can give it a try on a run tomorrow and give you my impressions. It's only in the 70s here right now though, so I won't be able to give you any feedback on hot weather performance at the moment. It does have an elastic drawstring adjustment, which sounds like instant headache to me, but it might help it stay on better.
The Athleta hat I have isn't in their catalog any more. I got it as swag from a retreat several years ago.
Um. Actually I can give you some useful feedback about the Zoot "cool" hat...
At 62°F it was unbearably hot.
With about a 9-10 mph headwind it vented pretty nicely across the crown. Otherwise, the only reason I didn't rip it off my head was that I hadn't worn sunglasses since it was mostly overcast, but it was too bright to run without either a hat or glasses.
Things I did like about the hat were that it felt plenty secure even with the deep crown and long brim. I cinched the elastic only just enough to touch my head, not to be snug at all; no headache and no slipping around. Not really enough wind to test how well it stayed on, but what wind there was didn't catch it at all. I expected the "tail" to be pretty uncomfortable, but I really didn't notice it at all.
So ... I'm not really disappointed since I didn't buy the hat to run in. And I'm glad I tested it on a cool day. This is NOT the hat for warm weather.
I have a small, very small head. I also detest wearing hats (make my head hurt, hat hair, sweat), but I bought a long visored Nike cap at the LRS and it fits me perfectly. The visor is so long, I feel like I am wearing an awning. It's very light weight, but not really vented.
I understand wearing a hat while running, but why do I see women around town, wearing these caps as they are out and about? And, they're always getting into an Escalade .
Don't get me started on men who wear hats as a fashion accessory.
Forgive me, oh Fashion Maven, if I choose to wear a hat because my hair looks like crap and I'm going/have been fishing or running or anywhere in the sun, want to protect my skin and don't want to get all gussied up for you.*
If a man is wearing a hat indoors, yeah, they look uncouth but, frankly, *shrug" whatever.
*Said somewhat in jest. There are a whole lot more important things to get worked up over.
I was raised with the rule that men don't wear hats of any kind at any indoor event like a dinner, church, reception, business meeting, etc. So, no, they don't look hot when they look rude in any kind of hat. "A gentleman is as a gentleman does." :p
Outdoors, fine! The bigger question is why does my husband not get hat head and I do? It isn't fair.
Heh, I haven't changed my avatar in ages, good a time as any. :D
Would you? It's really been bothering me.:p
OK, then.
Yes, I think men wearing hats at all times, especially indoors looks stupid. Like SadieKate, I was raised to think that it's inappropriate to wear a hat indoors, at work, etc. Yes, I'm old fashioned. It just seems like some men never take the hat off, and I just wonder when it became a fashion statement. Neither my DH or DSs wear hats, except maybe at the beach.
I totally understand wearing a hat for running or other outdoor sports. I just see a certain type of woman around here, who is dressed somewhat sporty, but doesn't look like she's been sweating at all or exercising, wearing a running cap or a baseball cap.
Don't get me wrong, I like baseball, but that does not extend to wearing a Red Sox hat! OK, my rant is over. My Nike hat really does keep the sun off of my face, but I actually get a headache, if I wear any hat more than 30 minutes. And, yes, even with my short hair, I will get hat head.
Hats can be cool in so many ways! Just not in a fine dining establishment. Leave it at home with your Oregon Ducks T-shirt. I haven't been to a church in a long time but I've seen guys wearing baseball caps walking across the parking lot. I can't imagine them carrying that thing around the entire time (and we're not talking about the traffic controller persons).
I have a great photo of my hubby out fishing with 2 inches of snow on his wide-brimmed Stetson. HOT! ;)
That has GOT to be in Florida, right?
Oh, and just for good measure:

HOT!
:D :p :D
GLC, you and your hubby are a very good-lookin' pair!
LOL, you are getting blasted for this :D
I, too, wear hats all the time. I have messy hair, it's just that way, it's curly and/or wavy and the curls and the waves fight with each other all the time. I also wear glasses, so find it a PITA to have prescription sun glasses, it's easier just to put a brimmed hat on and take what shade I can get.
I drive a MINI, though, not an Escalade.
(another reason I wear hats is that I train dogs. That may sound silly, but it's actually quite valuable - my dogs don't freak at someone wearing a hat. Dogs I train are used to it, too.)
Not taking it personally, believe me.
I never considered that some people wear hats for eye protection, as I wear sunglasses if I even step outside. I guess that comes from 23 years in the sunbelt. I really can't see well without the sunglasses.
SadieKate, your comment about the Oregon Ducks T shirt/cap made me snort, and Oak, well, I don't think that just applies to Florida, like wearing a hat into the courtroom. I am sure it happens here in strait laced Massachusetts.
GLC, you were camping... that is outdoor activity in my mind, so the hat looks natural. Just because I wouldn't wear one, well, it doesn't matter.
When I run in the summer, the hat just makes me sweat. But, I do wear it canoeing, as I feel really exposed to the sun.
I look kind of crappy in any hat or even a headband. I'm what my hairdresser calls a "head sweater" and wearing a hat just makes this worse. I hate having my picture taken when x country skiing because of this. I actually look better when photographed in my sunglasses, as for some reason, my eyes always look droopy when photographed. This is why I don't post a lot of pics here.
No offense taken, you guys are lucky my DH didn't give his opinion on this subject.
Well, to go back to the topic on hand....
The SweatVac hat lived up to its billing. It vac'ed all the gobs of sweat off my head and everything was a soaking was a soaking wet mess at the end of my run yesterday (warm and very humid run). Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing -- I sweat lots - but none of it was running down my eyes so I guess that's good. I just looked like a drowned rat at the end of the run.
FWIW, STP has a few running hats on sale. If you get their Deal Flyer, you'll likely see these today cheaper than what the link shows.
I got the hat Yellow used for her 50 miler. I wore it for a 3 mile windy run on Saturday. It stayed on and didn't feel heavy on my head. It wasn't super hot, only mid 70s, so I'll need to try it on a warmer day. It comes in lots of colors! :D

Glad it's so-far-so-good for you! I've used mine up into the low 90s. I tell myself that being a little warm is better than skin cancer. I love visors, but--to me--it's not worth it these days to be out in the sun for a long time with my scalp exposed! :)
Wow! Lots of emotion about hats!
GLC, you guys are adorable.
My boyfriend wears a hat on occasion, but usually when he hasn't done his hair. (Yes. He does his hair. He has product.) I don't wear hats casually, but I do have a few "fashionable" hats for the winter, and a straw hat I actually bought at a post-ride festival to protect my face from the sun. If you can tell in my pic - I am as white as the snow. I think about the sun, and I burn. So sun protection is pretty crucial to me.
However, I am not a runner, so cannot contribute to the actual topic at hand, so my apologies for any possible thread drift I may be contributing to. *bows out*
I have a cap which I bought several years ago that I LOVE. Seems like I bought it from either TE or Athleta but neither carries it anymore - ? The tag says Illuminite, and I found it on their website:
http://illuminite.com/women/primo-lid
It stays on in the wind - I've worn it in 30 mph + wind, it's well vented, and it has some reflective insets on the sides (although I don't think the reflectors work well at all - ). And it comes clean in the wash.
I am one of those women. Except for the Escalade. :) I almost always wear a hat with a bill. I really dislike sunshine on my face and the bill shades my face. I have maybe 20 different hats to chose from which I pick up here and there. I wear a hat all the time when outside.
My husband is one of those men. He is never without a baseball hat. Even sometimes in the house.
That looks really similar to my Athleta cap, except mine isn't reflective (and it doesn't stay on in the wind...). Is the adjuster in the back webbing and buckle?
One thing, I get terrible hat hair. Really, I look horrible, and I'm not one who's super concerned about my appearance, either. If I've been outside wearing a hat for any reason, then I'm stuck wearing a hat wherever I go until I can wash my hair. I might swap a wide-brimmed outdoor hat for a sportier cap, and then there I am in the casual dining restaurant with a sporty cap on, dressed in normal walking around clothes. And getting back into my Prius. ;)
My cap has a plastic zipper on the back with a push-button piece that slides across the teeth.
I ended up buying a brimmed outdoor hat yesterday. Definitely not for running, but I've been wanting to shade my ears and sides of my face more since I burn there - and I'm starting to get age spots. :( I use lots of sunblock but figure shading the most sensitive areas is better.
I've always been told that you should take your hat off in restaurants but I read a Miss Manners article that says hats off in the nicer sit-down places, but it's o.k. to leave it on in a fast-food type restaurant. But I don't go into the nicer sit-down places when I'm hot and sweaty. I go home to clean up first. Then the hat stays home.
It was funny, though, a few years ago my son and I were out on a ride and we stopped at a burger joint where a bunch of teenage girls worked. We went inside and I took off my helmet. The girls all smiled when they first saw me but when I took off my helmet, they looked absolutely mortified.:eek::eek: You'd think I had green snakes crawling out of my hair! There was a mirror on one of the walls - my hair didn't look THAT bad -- Actually, it didn't look like "helmet hair" at all. Maybe they were just expecting the worst - it sure got me tickled, though!
I figured out another reason why I dislike hats.
When my face/head is covered by a hat (this includes helmets, too), all you see are my laugh lines. They are bad and I am very self conscious about them. Sure, I'm vain.
Maybe not, Murienn, but I really do shy away from photos because of this.
This is true for me, too. Its even worse now that my hair is short. I tend to wear a lot of hats on the weekend because it's faster than a shower. I'm in a big brim hat out on the farm, a baseball hat when we run errands and then a plain black or white hat if I have to look slightly more presentable but don't have time to shower/wet my hair.
What I really wish is that I could have long hair/pony tail for my weekend life and short, spiky, styled hair for my work week. Anyone know of a way that would be possible besides using a wig? ;)
For running, I have to wear white. My head gets way too hot in the sun in anything darker. I've got two styles of white Nike running hats that I use. This is the one I bought at a local sporting goods store. It would be good for someone with a small head (its a tad too small for me - ie not deep enough):

This is the one I LOVE, purchased at the Nike employee store.

Cool, well-fitted with slight stretch, comfortable, but does not fly off in a wind (which happens to me a lot because I have a big head and thick hair so hats tend to not fit me well). The brim sheds water nicely when it's raining, too.
My husband usually wears a hat outside, but never indoors. It's how he was raised.
I sorta dated this guy once, he had long scraggly hair and often wore a ball cap. We were going to a classical music concert and he shows up wearing old jeans, scruffy untucked shirt, and the disreputable hat. Grunge was in style, but still...the two of us never really connected. A year or so later he was dating someone else. I saw him at a similar event and he was without hat, with short hair, and looked showered. Clearly I was never the woman for him!
