Does anyone know when Trek moved it's main manufacturing to China? I've been all over the internet trying to figure it out. :confused:
The 2005 Trek 1000 I'm borrowing from a friend has no "made in China" label but I can't find a "made in USA" one either??
I got curious. :D
FWIW, according to this thread on bikeforums.net and this ad for an earlier model, the 1000 was made in China from when they revived the model name in 2000. Trek's official history conspicuously omits any mention of Asian manufacturing. :rolleyes:

I think the 5.2 has a carbon frame, no? I think Trek made carbon frames here longer then the ALU frames.

No I have a Davidson, also made in Seattle; but they are equally great bikes.
Some bikes were moved overseas over a period of time.
My Trek T2000 tandem (2005) has made in USA and all the tandems until Trek stopped making them in 2009 were made in the USA.
Or a Serotta, made in New York state.
yes the 5.2 I have is carbon, it was the last year they made the pilot. The next year they introduced the madone.Quote:

Cannondale was acquired in 2008 (see their wikipedia entry).
I, for one, was bummed. I bought my Synapse (a 2011 model) at the end of 2010 thinking that at least the frame was US made. There is no sticker anywhere that identifies where it was manufactured.
Bike Radars says "Taichung, Taiwan (for coordination of sourcing, testing and quality of Asian suppliers/partners)" which I take to mean that the Taiwanese partner sources the frames from other Asian countries, just like Nike shoes (where the manufacturing partners are Taiwanese and the factories are in Vietnam, China...).
Yeah. DBF's Cannondale (an old model, from 2005, I think) has "Made in the USA" plastered all over it. I looked at the new ones while at the LBS back home and that certainly isn't the case...
At least Giant is upfront about making their frames in Taiwan. As upfront as anyone is going to be with a small sticker on the back of the seat tube...
Umm Giant is a Taiwanese company.
Almost all carbon frames for larger companies are made in Taiwan. And the Taiwanese do a great job with carbon. Their frames have way fewer problems than many.
Having said that, I'm all about trying to buy local. I have a Tonic (built in Portland) and I've just ordered a Moots (Colorado).
The US is FULL of great frame builders. Landshark is in Oregon and John Slawta has built frames for the pros. He's almost exclusively doing carbon now.
I believe the 9 series (OLCV) are still handmade in the US.

Cannondale was bought by Dorel a few years back and shifted production overseas.
The 5.X Madones are made overseas. The 6.X Madones are made in Wisconsin.
Yeah, DH was disappointed when Cannondale moved all their manufacturing overseas. He has a 2005 R5000 which says very prominently "Handmade in the USA". One of our friends recently got a Lynskey custom mountain bike, seriously drool worthy. I am curiously interested in one of their house blend bikes (semi-custom) but it will be awhile before I can get one.
