Any Ultra Endurance riders in TE?
I am looking for an Ultra Endurance anti chafe cream. Something that works on rides 6 hours or longer. I am sure that my bicycle fit is correct, my saddle and bib shorts are good. So far I've tried everything including: Assos, Chamois Butt'r, Hooha Ride Glide, DZ Nuts Bliss and had no success, these work ok on shorter rides but even when reapplying these creams while on the ride they do not provide enough protection for what I need.
There are probably a lot of different definitions here of Ultra Endurance, but I do rides up to 600k (though more regularly 100 - 200 miles), and find I just have to reapply chamois butter if I need it. (There are often rides I don't need it at all, and there are often times where chafing just happens regardless of what I do).
I have not yet found any appreciable difference in the type/brand in terms of longevity.
XelhaI, I know exactly what you mean. I have raced 24 hour MTB races and I do rides up to 10 hrs at a time and none of the regular creams will do it for me on the hard or long stuff either :( Give Endur-It chamois cream a try. Since I started using it on long rides or races all the issues with chafing are gone :) Okoole stuff is another choice, works on long rides but is very greasy, stains and don’t really care for the smell.
Well, I don't do the long rides, but IME, once you get over even 30-40 miles, creams with a lot of water in them like Chamois Butt'r are useless. The water dissipates and you're left with a whole lot of residue.
If you haven't tried pure shea butter yet, give it a try. It's not greasy and it doesn't break down - over time, whatever part of it slides away from where you want it, just gets absorbed into your chamois and helps lubricate more out-of-the-way places (or helps condition your leather saddle :) ). It only takes a little. I only need to re-apply it maybe every 50-60 miles, and I think that's more because it gets wiped off when I pee, than because it wears off. I carry it in a 1/2 oz jar in my jersey pocket.
One word: Lantiseptic. Buy the 50% lanolin version, not the 30% version. I just finished Paris-Brest-Paris. 765 miles in 88:45. My butt was pressure sore, yes, but NO chafing and no broken skin. That stuff is tenacious. It stays where you put it. :). My friend Cecil calls it butt spackle! I wouldn't ride an ultra without it.
I have tried several ones and prefer dznuts bliss for shorter rides and dznuts for longer ones. For somer reason that really works well for me.

Just Googled this stuff...would the 50% version be the "Skin Protectant"? Because I did see that the "Daily Skin Protectant" is the 30% version, but it doesn't say anywhere on the site which one is the 50% one...so I assumed it was the non-Daily Skin Protectant.Quote:

And fwiw, you may be fine at 20-30-50 mile distances, often times chafing doesn't make itself known until you get to century-plus distances, which is what the OP was asking about.

found some Lantiseptic at the drugstore this afternoon. Picked it up in hopes it helps better than Chamois Butt'r or Hoo Ha Ride Glide. It's got to be better than that stuff....
I don't claim to be an expert on this and have never bought a butt cream because I fear they may be using unsafe ingredients. I have cheap ol' mineral oil lying around the house and have used that a few times and I think it works great. No need to spend much money.
Except I think mineral oil and other petroleum-based oils can cause the foam in shorts chamois to break-down extra fast. So you may not be saving any money in the long run if you end up having to replace shorts prematurely.Quote:

Yes, it's the skin protectant. As near as I can tell, you can buy it in a big tub, or a case pack (144 packets). That's it. There's no option to buy the single packets in smaller quantities anywhere online. This stuff is designed for "professional use" so it doesn't seem to come in consumer-sized packages. The 30% version does, but not the 50% version. That's fine with me though, because it doesn't spoil and I ride a ton... The case pack set me back about $100.Quote:

I rode today and used my new shea butter. It seemed to really stay in place.
I found a 4 oz tub at a local pharmacy. It was a bit hard to find, but was located in the Baby Care aisle along with other diaper rash treatments. Also, a 36 pack of the foil packs on Ebay(http://www.ebay.com/itm/LANTISEPTIC-...item5191e49f8a) and I did confirm the 50% lanolin.

I love DZ Nuts Bliss. It's also a great way to treat saddle sores or chaffed skin post-ride.
I like Bliss but so far, nothing has worked for me for AIDS Lifecycle, and it seems like the Shea butter might stay in place a bit better.
This topic looks pretty covered BUT I am a huge fan of PuraCare Active Sports Cream, made in Ogden Utah. Has lanolin, aloe vera gel, vit A,D,E. I have been using for 4 years now and really like it. Note - In addition to cycling, I also use on my feet when I am hiking.
This long weekend my husband and I rode 3 days and got over 350 miles on the bike. The First Day: We both used Endur-It. The cream (is more like a balm) has a faint but nice smell, it’s texture is thick and sticky in the jar but once a little body warmth hits it, has excellent lubricant concistency, it gives you a very smooth feeling and performed amazingly good for the whole length of the ride with no issues of burning or chafing at all.
Second day we used Lantiseptic. The texture seemed similar, but I just didn’t feel as soft as Endur-It and the smell of Lantiseptic wasn’t attractive to say the least! Especially if we compared it to Endur-It’s nice smell. Lantiseptic appeared to be greasier as it was quite hard to clean off your hands after application, but as recommended Lantiseptic worked well with no issues with chafing or burning.
After the second day of riding we had Endur-It as the clear winner. Both my Husband and I just liked Endur-It much better. Is clearly formulated for cyclists, as it has a nice smell, really smooth feeling, it lasts for several hours without having to apply again, also it is easy to clean off your hands and to wash off your shorts. I could see us using Lantiseptic if Endur-It wasn’t available but for now we’ve found our chamois cream. Thank you for all you help and see you on the road :)
Does anyone here ever have any sanitary or hygiene concerns regarding the use of a chamois cream product in a jar? In the past, I have always opted to buy chamois creams that come in a tube (I'm currently using a cream called That Butt Stuff), simply because it doesn't require sticking your fingers into the jar...sometimes multiple times. Squeezing the cream from a tube just seems "cleaner" to me. Does anyone else worry about this? Or am I just being over-paranoid about germs and bacteria from fingers tainting the jar?

@Linda, I personally don’t think is an issue. Assos which is one of the most popular chamois creams on the market comes in a jar just like Lantiseptic and Endur-It. Also most of these creams have some anti-bacterial properties. Have you ever used a regular cream or makeup that came in a jar? I know I have many times.
I don't think it's an issue, but another advantage of shea butter is that I need to use so little, it only takes one "dip."
I do like shea butter and I just found a chamois cream called Mad Alchemy that has shea in it, but some other things as well like tea tree oil. It goes on a little easier than shea butter but it stays put. I really love it. It's a very small company so most bike shops don't carry it, but you can mail order it from their site. I didn't get the women's specific because I got it at a bike shop, but they have women's specific on their site and I might order that.
