I always put PB in mine. PB and fruit, fresh or dried.
I don't do milk, and oats don't seem to cook well with milk substitutes, so I just make mine with water now, but I do get that and I don't think it's weird.
I do not put milk in mine because I don't like milk, but I do know several people that will use it. I will sometimes put PB in my oatmeal. Lately I have been adding some almonds, raisons and protien powder. Pretty filling with all of that.
I think milk in oatmeal is a pretty normal choice.
I hardly ever cook oatmeal anymore, just stir it into yogurt and frozen blueberries and try to stay out of it until the berries thaw.
I don't like milk. At all. I always eat cereal dry.
But oatmeal HAS to be made with milk (for me). Except I cook it on the stove, even the quick-cook stuff, and it's sooooo hard not to scald the milk.
Okay, I must be really weird. I cook my oatmeal with water, but once it's cooked, I put some in a bowl and put just enough milk to barely cover it. I then let it cool for a few minutes until it sort of congeals. I have no idea why I started to do that or why I like it.
I'm a freak! :)
Hey Jess, I eat my cereal dry too. If eat it at work my co-workers always pick on me for it.
Welcome to the freak club! :p My mom always made my oatmeal practically swimming in milk (whole milk) when I was a child. Also butter on top and brown sugar. Yum! So that's the ultimate comfort food for me. I manage to forgo the butter now, but I still like a nice large splash of milk, along with cinnamon, chopped nuts, and maple syrup on mine. I cook it in water, though.
I use a lot of milk on my cereal too. These days it's almond milk, but I like a lot of it. I always watch my in-laws pour a tiny dollup of milk on their cereal and realize I must be a freak, but I like lotsa milk on my cereals! :D
I've always put a little milk in my oatmeal. I make mine rather stiff, then add milk to cool it down just a bit so I can eat it. And if I'm going to go skiing or for a long bike ride, and have it on hand, 1/2 & 1/2 is really good. :D
Here in the hotel, it's instant oats. :( At least they have raisins.
I always add milk to my oatmeal. Always. I thought that's what you're supposed to do. Plus, adding cold milk immediately cools the temp so its not too hot for the kids. My uncle recommended PB to me a few weeks ago when he stopped by on his morning run and I happened to making oats for the kiddos. Now we add PB sometimes too.
:)
I have been enjoying oatmeal with either raisins or dried cranberries, a little bit of brown sugar and milk- so now, I don't think it's weird at all. I haven't tried peanut butter, but have tried almond butter or nutella... and it's great with fresh blueberries or strawberries.
Another dry cereal eater here too. But I'll pass on the oatmeal.
I cook up a big pot of McCann's steel cut Irish Oatmeal with water, chopped almonds or walnuts, dried blueberries or cranberrys and then keep it in the fridge. Take out a hunk cold, microwave it, add about 1/2 c milk and I'm good to go. If I'm feeling really decadent or doing more than 50 miles I add a tbl. of nutella (hazelnut paste and chocolate yumm..) and party down.
I have always added milk to my cereal, be it oatmeal or something else so I guess, especially with oatmeal that puts me in the "out" group. Maybe TE needs to do a survey.
My mom loves quaker multi grain hot cereal, more than just oats! But she'll have a cup of milk on the side and pour a little over it while she eats it. I've seen oatmeal served at restaurants this way too.
Also, my brother is weird about his cereal. he hates it soggy, so he has cold cereal dry with a giant glass of milk on the side. he also didn't eat much more that cereal and peanut butter sandwiches until he went to college. weirdo.
I cook steel-cut oatmeal with just water in the microwave. After it's cooked I then stir in some vanilla soy milk & honey. Sometimes I'll add in some flax seeds.
If y'all haven't tried this, cook it with half water and half lite coconut milk. Add whatever else you like. The coconut milk makes it super creamy. :D
I never used to add milk to oatmeal, but recently started adding a little to cool it off. I do like to add PB or some other nut butter to it - or even just some peanuts or other nuts but the PB is great in it. I do not actually eat rolled oatmeal, but either Trader Joes multi-grain or McCains Irish steel-ground oats.
Yummmy milk!
I cook my stove top with milk, flax seed, and some pumpkin pie spice. Then I top with almond or peanut butter and let it get all melty.....yummmyy......
I make my oatmeal with water, then throw a splash of non fat milk and a small handful of raisins. This is my standard breakfast before a ride.
I make my oatmeal with milk and then top with something that has crunch (fresh fruit, nuts, granola, etc). I like my oatmeal to have some 'chew'. I don't like adding milk after the fact because I don't like it wet, but most people I know eat it that way.
Cooking oatmeal with water leaves it so incredibly flat tasting that I only do it when it's my only choice.
Because of this thread, I can't stop thinking about good ole' fashioned oatmeal. I'm off to make me a bowl!
I use half skim-milk, and half water...I never measure either...I just eyeball it. I like my oatmeal sort of in between "stiff" and creamy. I love adding a dollop of a natural PB and a few banana slices before cooking, too. Blueberries are great too...but they always turn the oatmeal into a funky purpleish color. :p
oh man I love oatmeal :) I made alton brown's steel cut recipe (complete with buttermilk, milk, butter) yesterday and added half a can of pumpkin and more brown sugar than called for. I had 3-4 servings and today I reheated a serving and put it in a mostly-empty barney butter (almond) jar. It was divine.
Food bloggers do all sorts of great things with oatmeal. I typically cook it with water and apple sauce. Or milk and water and banana. Or if I don't have milk I add an egg white and mix it real good. Coconut milk is good too.
Always have a TB of nut butter on top.

I have been known to eat oatmeal for breakfast, lunch or dinner :)
I like steel cut, old fashioned and quick cut.
