I didn't realize that hummingbirds nested more than once a year?? must be somewhere warm? I'll have to put that on my favourites tab!
I have a hummingbird tattoo... it's a long story but I'm glad I got it.
I love Hummingbirds!
Thanks for the link.:)
Phoebe is back! No eggs yet.
We have an egg! She's sitting. Video of egg-laying is here.
According to an update, the eggs were lost on Nov 4. :( Here is a happier story of a guy who rescued a hummingbird: http://www.wimp.com/babyhummingbird/.
That is adorable, and very cheering. Thanks for posting.
Phoebe has started building a new nest.
She's laid two eggs!
OMG!!! I just watched one of the eggs hatch!!
My goodness, I never saw a baby hummingbird before!
the baby hasn't moved in the past 20 minutes or so, and phoebe hasn't been back in just as long :(
an hour later...
phew!! they're both ok!
I'm so addicted to this right now. It's like the baby's growing right before our eyes (I know it's literal, but the baby's changed a lot even in 24 hours).
I was reading that the males have no role in any of this other than fertilizing. poor Phoebs and other female hummingbirds have to do all the work, no fair!!
baby number 2 hatched!!
They have itty bitty feathers! I wonder if those grew since they hatched, or if they just weren't apparent at first.
That is awesome. My kids love it!
I think they're Rufous Hummingbirds. Mama seems to have that coloration when she lands where you can see color on her other than green.
she's actually a non-migrating Channel Islands Allen's Hummingbird, hence the name "Phoebe Allens" :)
Phoebe's Facebook page has great video of Phoebe feeding her babies.
They are growing very fast.
OMG, I tuned in as she was feeding them! So far, I saw one hatch, and now the feeding. Cool! They are getting bigger, but I guess that's relative.
The kids are huge! They barely fit in the nest.
The estimated fledge date is 2/8 - 2/18. I will be surprised if they stay in the nest another two weeks.
They are alot bigger on my screen than they are in real life.
Wow! I have not looked in about a week. They sure have gotten big! Every once in a while you see one of their long tongues dart out or they practice furiously beating their wings.
they are just two little pooping machines!!
The "fledge watch" officially begins today. The kids are preening like crazy. Getting ready for the big event, I suppose.
I haven't check in on the little buggers for a week, and MY! how they've grown! They're huge, if one considers a hummingbird huge.
we (my co-worker and I) saw one of them buzzing his/her wings like crazy a couple of days ago.
After they fledge, do they come back to the nest, or is that it??
Badger, I wondered that, too. Someone in the chat said the hummingbirds stay on a nearby branch and mom feeds them for a while.
They certainly do look ready to go! Right now they are speculating in chat that it's too late in the day for a fledge.
Everyone said the same thing about one of our hawks this spring, but he didn't listen and fledged right before sunset.
They are gone! I tuned in this morning and they were both there. I had to take a call and when I came back a few minutes later, there was only one. Oh!
And then someone came into my office and I had to talk with them for a few minutes. When I turned around, the nest was empty! I just missed both fledges.
I will take a look at the video later. I didn't expect this to be so emotional!
yes, they fledged!! my friend forwarded me a link to a video of the fledging.

scroll down to where you see the video embed. they only fledged minutes apart, and you can see when the first one goes, the second one is keenly watching where s/he went.
Apparently they've both been safely spotted in a nearby yucca tree.
the nest is empty, but a good empty not like the Hornby Island one :(
Thanks for the video link, Badger! Amazing how easy it is to become attached to a baby bird.
Thanks for the link Badger. Cool. And yes, a much happier empty nest outcome than Hornby Island.
if you go to the hummingbird webcam site, they have it focused on another nest, apparently she was seen tending to the nest and another clutch can be expected soon! she's a baby-cranking mama!
Gosh, you are right! She's almost finished that nest! I glanced at the chat and apparently another bird stole some material from her nest.
I'm not sure if I can handle online eagles and hummingbirds and along with three real-life hawk nests.
Phoebe laid an egg this morning.
the camera angle is *just* out of sight of the nest so it's hard to see whether there's one or not. she was wiggling around this morning a lot so I was joking to my co-worker that she's probably cranking one out. Maybe I was right! :D
Yep, there are eggs in the nest.
I wanna see! I wanna see! Dang it! I get home too late to see anything. It's always dark. :(
Eggs hatched March 12.
one fledged!!
both fledged!! http://s4.zetaboards.com/Birds_of_a_...pic/8574794/1/
I guess one of them fledged twice before and came back, so you never know!!
