Update on crash status-vent

So I went to the ortho yesterday.
I thought that the arm would be out of the brace and I would be back on the bike. But nope, turns out the fracture in my elbow is worse. They showed me the xray and it is slightly more displaced now then it was 3 weeks ago at the last xray. So turns out, that even though it felt really good, riding my bike 3 times was not a good idea! Nor was doing other things I was doing(I was using my left hand for anything that didn't hurt). Now I have 3 more weeks of wearing the brace and no weight bearing with my left arm.

And then... my hip has been hurting since the crash. When I brought it up to the ortho originally he said it was probably just a bone bruise and if it still hurt when I came back in 3 weeks he would inject it. So, I ran 4 miles one day and then 10 miles the next. Then I couldn't run for about 2 weeks- I would try and couldn't even get 3 steps in. But then after about 3 weeks I was able to run 6 miles, the last 2 being painful. And then I wasn't able to run 2 steps the next day. And my hip constantly aches.

So, when I was at the ortho for the arm I brought up the hip again and he took an xray and guess what- it is fractured!!!

Ughh in the ER after my crash I told them it hurt, but since I could walk everyone just focused on my head and elbow and assumed it was a bone bruise.

So now I have 3 weeks of no weight bearing (except walking) on my hip. He said I can ride the trainer, since it isn't weight bearing- but I can't put my left arm down and that gets annoying very quickly...
I can't go do weights in the gym(well I can do leg extensions and leg curls, as long as it doesn't make my hip feel worse after I do them)
A little frustrated that I can't ride my bike outside still, can't run, can't even swim.

Hopefully these 3 weeks pass fast. I feel as if I am getting so much weaker already. It is base season, everyone is doing 100+ mile rides and I am doing nothing. I am going to have a lot of work to do before the race season begins and I am going stir crazy, even though it has only been 3 days of no cardio(the previous 3 weeks I was on the trainer or running daily.. but since I haven't healed- thinking maybe I should take it easier now)

(((Emily))) I completely understand your frustration, but you gotta get healthy! Racing season isn't going to do you any good if you are still hurt... Give your body the time it needs and deserves to heal.

Ugh. Hope you feel better soon. Are you seeing a PT? (If not, I'd definitely ask for a referral!)

I've read a few times lately that contrary to what they used to teach us, it's good to keep doing weights with the uninjured arm - by keeping the neuromuscular pathways open, it actually maintains strength in the injured arm. Obviously you'd have to keep it low weight/high rep to avoid stressing the pelvis with your core muscles.

Now, I've only read that in laypersons' publications and haven't bothered to track down the research. But something to think/ask your PT about.

Your body is telling you that it needs time off to heal. Be patient, and you'll be better for it in the long run.

hahaha. I just tried to ride the trainer and my bike just about fell over- decided that was a sign!(can't get it tight enough with one hand)

What a stinker! I feel for you but speaking from experience I really recommend letting yourself heal. *hugs*

what she said. Be patient. it pays off.

Please please take the three weeks entirely off, no gym, no weights, no nothing, in the long and short run it won't effect you that much. Do things you don't normally have time to do, go to the movies, a new cafe, some new activity for the three weeks, it'll go by quicker than you think and then you will feel a LOT better, and bodies that train that much NEED rest, sometimes and usually don't get it except for obligatorily!

Oh no! That's really bad news. I hope the weeks fly by!

Oh Emily! :eek: I guess your hip was feeling neglected and wanted some attention. ;) 3 weeks will soon come to pass and you'll be up and at em again. :) Until then, I'll send you a virtual cup of hot tea and a biscotti. :)

Give your body time to heal. You already have a great base and you will come right back when you can. Take it from a 42 year old horse crash test dummy, the harder you try to push the more it will hurt when you get older.

I did call the ortho today to talk and he said I can ride the trainer since it is non weight bearing, just have to keep the arm off the bars. So I did 2 hours today. That is going to be all I can do for the next few weeks(which will drive me crazy!! how do you ladies up north do it all winter??)

Sorry to hear what you're going through - that totally stinks.

Take from someone else who is recovering - do what they tell you! I know it stinks. I have been riding ONLY on the trainer, and it's gorgeous outside still. No racing either, and we're in the height of 'cross season.

But, I've been trying to be good about it (I fractured my ankle), and will be back to it before long. I am managing by doing just what Oakleaf said - spending some time doing other things that would normally NOT happen if I were still racing. It's kind of nice.

The fitness is THERE. You're not going to lose everything. I'm learning that as I get older, my body NEEDS the healing time.

That said, I was VERY excited to ride outdoors in the middle of the day yesterday! I can pedal, but no running, dismounting or jumping, so no 'cross...

Take the time! Heal well - that was a bad accident.

Trainer miles aren't as good as riding on the road, sensory wise. Yeah, it's boring. Just like running on a treadmill. I put mine in front of the TV and watch a movie, or several episodes of a TV show, or a soccer game or something.

+1 to what everyone else said. As hard as it is, you won't have a season if you don't heal now. I'd be working on a lot of viusalizing, mental training; all of the great things that will happen once your body is healed..take care of you!!!

Fell off my bike end of July and fractured my scaffoid (spelling?) a small bone in the wrist. Been in my brace 13 weeks now. Doctor says it will be another 3 weeks till the brace could come off...needless to say, its the trainer or nothing!:eek:

Oh, I feel your pain. I am still messed up from my crash. Some things improving. But, gheez that healing process can certainly feel like an eternity.

Well, you mentioned one of a few things bike related you can do already...

It made me feel better to sort out my gear I had been neglecting, catch up on articles on cycling, etc. I teach spinning at my gym. At first, that even hurt. But, it's gotten much better. Not sure if my ortho will think I'm strong enough to try outside. But, I know I am better than I was before.

Try to think of it that way when at all possible. One more day of rest is another step in the right directions.
