Storing cycling clothing?

How do you all store your cycling clothing?

I've accumulated a fair bit of stuff at this point, and I'm running out of room. Currently, the jerseys and shorts are hung up in a small second closet. The winter stuff is in a plastic tote for the time being. In the near future, it's going to have to be unpacked, and then my little closet will be overflowing. But I can't put the summer stuff in storage cuz I need stuff to wear on the trainer!

I'd love to hear how other people keep cycling clothes and accessories organized :)

First step - stop buying bicycling stuff. :D

How much summer stuff do you really need to keep out for the trainer? Depending how often you do laundry, you could get by with just 1 - 2 sets of clothes for trainer.

I just wear a bra on the trainer and no jersey, so I pack away all my summer stuff, except for one jersey, just in case we get a warm day. I'm in CA so it could happen. :)

In all seriousness, I probably could pack away most of the summer jerseys. Despite the best-laid plans, I don't ride inside more than a couple days a week.

Maybe I need to join a spin class to motivate me....but that's another thread entirely.

Jerseys, tights and shorts are all folded up ...in 2 big piles with T-shirts and turtlenecks for casual wear in closet. It's a problem.

Shoes and 4 cycling jackets are all crammed with my dressier coats in front of home. We only have 2 closets in our condo-home.

Solution right now...sometimes 1 hanger has 2 jackets hanging on top of one another.

Space must shared with dearie...who complains occasionally especially on shoes pile-up. I do my best...I seem to discard 1 pr. of unnecessary shoes every 1-3 yrs. That's pretty good, don't you think? Last time I bought a pair of non-cycling shoes, was 18 months ago.

My dearie keeps several of his cycling jackets and helmet in locked storage area with his bikes.

Hey, in our tight space I couldn't be both truly fashionable woman-happy and truly cycling-gear happy. Guess the latter is the road I chose for now.

When I did spin class, I would wear a workout top, not a jersey. Those I never pack away since I do weights and yoga year round.

I find if I ride indoors, I tend to over heat quickly and end up in a sports bra.. So I don't always put a shirt on because noone sees it but me anyways.

Otherwise, I don't hang up my cycling gear (maybe the jackets), I just fold it & shove it into a shelf in the armoire.

I don't have that many cycling clothes to be burdensome, even in my closet-deficient tiny house. My shorts and jerseys share a drawer in my dresser. During the winter, my tights and jackets, etc. are in the attic in a plastic bin. I'll be making the switchover in the next few weeks.

Finally got my cycling gear better organized over the weekend - I keep it in one of those cloth closet organizers (w 5 or 6 lg. square openings hanging vertically over the rod) since biking clothes are hard to "fold" & I don't want to hang them up. One compartment is for "tops," one for "bottoms," one for "socks & accessories," one for "outerwear," & one for "worn 1X," - for the stuff not dirty enough to go in the laundry but that I don't want to mix up w/ the clean. Everything's visible, & easy enough to stuff things in & grab whatever I need. We'll see how it goes . . .

I bought a Closetmaid 9-cube storage unit and 9 fabric drawers at Target and set it up in my closet. I have 1 drawer for shorts and 1 each for long sleeve, short sleeve and sleeveless jerseys. I use another drawer for socks and gloves. The rest hold small gear like lights, frame pumps, spare tubes, etc. Keeps things neat and everything is accessible whenever I need it.

Now that appeals to me! I'm beginning to think that hangers aren't very space efficient, and it's extra work to hang everything up. If I ditched the hangers, I would have room for cubbies. I guess I'd need a few hangers for jackets and vests, but that can't be more than 4 or 5. Hmmm....

I vote yes on trying Spinning classes to see if you like them:). I teach Spinning at my gym year round. In the winter, a lot of roadies come to the gym just for that. For a lot it's more motivating than getting on their indoor trainers alone. Plus, you might find that you make some new outdoor cycling friends to discuss the sport with while couped up inside during bad weather.

Storage... lol, my stuff is all over the place atm. I was thinking what about clear plastic under the bed storage boxes? Jerseys, shorts, etc. could be rolled and placed inside. Sort stuff out by category and label the boxes on the outside. That way if you want something, it's not such a mess to dig through stuff to find it.

I second that you just need a wicking tank top for indoor training. You are not traveling a distance around that you need the pockets of a jersey. Sports bra. Maybe a pair of shorts or two for the trainer. Or, if inside you could use a gel pad seat cover (in place of a chamois) and wear whatever for shorts for spin class.

Seriously, I don't own any workout tank tops, and only a couple of wicking t-shirts, so it's less expense to just wear my summer jerseys. I won't be working out sans shirt anytime soon, even in my own house.

I don't know if you have a basement, or other out of the way place, but we acquired an old second hand dresser and I keep everything, except the jerseys, in there. That dresser also stores most of our work-out clothes and our winter stuff (hats, gloves...) that we only need part of the year. The jerseys I hang in the closet.

The jerseys live in my closet (where they share space with my printer and minifridge, as well as all of my jeans). Everything else lives in a drawer.

Hmmm, that reminds me. I used to have a handlebar bag on my bike and I kept the tv and vcr remotes in it while I was spinning at home. But this summer I replaced it with a bento box. I guess I'll have to put it back on the bike for indoor training.

i keep a stool next to the bike which has the tv remote & such like that on it.

I have a 5 drawer large plastic set of drawers stuck in my walk in closet. It's mostly cycling stuff, but also has my regular base layers, yoga tops, running t's in there. I had to get a bigger set of drawers last year; used to have a 3 drawer one. I don't put the winter/summer stuff away. My skorts and commuter type pants are hanging in the closet, with my regular clothes.

I have a closet that is the size of a room and a large basement with built in hanging bars along one side. Unfortunately, this means that I can afford to be messy with my clothing and boy am I!

I don't pack away my winter cycling stuff because in my case, it sometimes gets worn year round (like a couple of weekends ago where I had to pull it out for a rain ride). Most of my cycling tops (jackets, wool cycling specific stuff, jerseys, vests, etc) hang along one side of my closet. My shorts and tights are everywhere - piled in boxes, on the dresser (also in the closet), in a couple of wire bins, shoved in the corner...etc. Buffs, socks, gloves, armwarmers, boleros...those are all pretty much scattered but the things I wear the most are usually near the top of the pile. Seriously, I need an origanizational intervention! :eek:

And to be clear, my disorganization applies to ALL my clothing... not just cycling stuff. I really need to spend a weekend getting it all under control. :o

Me too -- and I just did spend two weekends trying to get it under control. Right now, most everything is in neat piles on the basement floor. No idea what to do with it all now.

My "storage system" consists of throwing all the laundry onto the spare bed, because our dresser drawers are broken and/or full to capacity.

Every time I prepare for a ride, I find myself seething at my lack of organisation. I pick up every single item on that bed looking for that particular jersey I simply must wear, and of course, I never find it the first time round. I do this a few times over before either a) finding the essential jersey or b) giving up and just wearing one of the fifty million other jerseys I've located in the process. Ditto for my nicks.

By the next time I ride, the fifty million jerseys have been swallowed up by the other laundry on the bed, and once again I have to repeat the process.

I really need to get my act together and buy some furniture! But that's money I could be spending on more cycling stuff!! :D :o

I have a couple of those shoe organiser things that have 9 vertical pigeonholes to put your shoes in. I roll up my bikewear bits and post them in each of the holes. I've got knicks, warmers, buffs, jackets, vests, booties and pretty much everything in there. It's great - I can always find what i want. And then a pile of jerseys on the shelf above.:)

Intriguing....how we have different styles/living situations to squirrel away our cycling apparel and gear. We have no extra beds/pieces of furniture to throw on more stuff...because we lack floor space. We even have to store away our weigh scale. (It is useful: discourages obsession with weighing oneself too often.) Bathroom lacks space. All probably a good thing.

GLC's walk-in rm. closet sounds unimaginable where we live.

To add to my disjointed cycling stuff storage saga, I store my helmets (2), gloves, glasses, headbands and panniers in another storage area where there's also a separated pantry closet for dry foods, my art supplies cart, cleaning agents, etc.

At least this area is also near front of home...there is a walking path in home, that I take as I walk along and gather my clothing and gear from different storage areas before reaching my bike downstairs.

Order in madness does exist. :p

Actually, our house is quite small. That one closet and our master bath were added on about 20 years ago to a tiny 1960's ranch home, so they are totally incongruous to the rest of the house. Maybe get one of those wire closet organizing systems. My closet isn't walk in or anything, but I'd say it's maybe 6-8 feet long (it's 4 closet sliding door panels if those are a standard length) & 2-3 feet deep? Across the top of the closet there's 2 shelves that run the entire length (well, the bottom shelf runs about 2/3rds of the length?) I put my down blankets and sweats up on those shelves. and heavy pants. Then on the left side of the closet, the side that lacks the 2nd shelf all the way across the top is a high bar to hang clothes on and then another lower bar to hang clothes on - so the top bar I hang all my jackets on, the bottom bar my pants get hung on and some shirts - there's a shelf over the bottom bar that gets like base layer type pants...

then down the middle of the closet in maybe a 2.5 foot section in a bunch of shelves going from floor to ceiling - I've got one shelf for wool shirts, one shelf for t shirts, one shelf for long sleeve shirts, etc.

Then the other section of the closet has a regular height bar for hanging clothes - so my skirts/dresses/long coats go there - but since I don'thave so many of those, I do have a 3 drawer plastic dresser in there that has like sports bras and shorts in it. and scarves. on the bottom of the closet I have various "bins' that have hats, gloves, scarves" So while it's not a huge walk in closet, I can fit a lot into it because of how it's set up.

Then my "armoire" is actually an ikea bonde bookcase system, I think? I dunno, the bottom of the bookcase is like 4 drawers & then I've got 2 doors that open up with like 4 shelves above it. the bf gets one shelf. the rest is mine :)

I just have a chest at the foot of the bed that holds socks.

I don't do a great job of putting everything back after its' been washed, but all my clothes fits really well and is organized when I do!

shoes, etc. i have on shelves right by the front door, and right by the back door in the utility room. helmets on hooks by both front & back door.

I have a five-drawer plastic unit that lives in a closet. I have a drawer for accessories (knee/leg warmers, sports bras, etc.), a drawer for running shirts, a drawer for cycling jeseys, a drawer for cycling shorts, and a drawer for tights/sports pants.

There is a basket with sports socks on top.

I have a lot of cycling clothes ... they would probably fill half my bedroom walk in closet. So we bought a wardrobe at Ikea for a corner of the garage. The wardrobe has two pull out bars for hangers at the top where we keep jackets, vests etc. Under the hanging clothes is a pull out wire basket. And at the bottom are six cubes that hold the fabric "drawers" where we keep jerseys, shorts, tights and so on. We installed bookcase lights at the top and store seldom used stuff above it.

Across from it we have a revolving storage unit with a mirror on one side and three more cubes with fabric drawers. It also has hooks on both sides where we hang our helmets. We bought it for about $50 bucks in the kids furniture section at Target. It was too short so we elevated it on a two drawer base unit which gives us even more storage.

I get lots of compliments on it and I love having everything in one place and organized.

I keep the ironing board alongside my bike and trainer set up to hold the tv remote and other things I like to have handy.
