There goes Zen again, asking for a fight. :p
I'll get the popcorn...
Why is it stupid? Mine has saved my seat a time or two when I'm transporting my bike on the back of my car. I don't like my Brooks exposed to rain and sun while it's on my Thule. I used plastic bags a couple of times, but the wind catches them and rips them. This is pretty form fitting and works perfectly. Maybe it doesn't rain there? Once I left in early morning humidity/fog and it kept the seat dry then, too. I try not to expose my bike to the rain, but sometimes the weather changes on a dime and I've been caught in it.
If I'm leaving my bike out in the rain and I intend to ride it later, I put plastic bags or a shower cap on the seat.
usually I double bag it, so I can take off the wet outer bag and sit on the dry inner bag during my wide & not wet my seat or bum prematurely.
But maybe I'm a princess.
i tend to turn mine inside out so as not to advertise the fact that there's a brooks saddle underneath, but yeah, i guess i don't see why it's such a bad product. it rolls up and fits under my seat so it's always there. i don't always have plastic bags on me.
if that's the stupidest bike accessory ever than we must be on some hella smart planet! I've been trying to make some really cool looking ones with oilcloth......
They spelled 'cord; wrong!
The plastic bags don't work when you are traveling 70mph down the interstate. The wind catches them and they rip and fly off, not to mention the noise they make. I spent one entire trip trying to get the darn things to stay and gave up. If your bike was just sitting, sure they would be fine. I was even going to make my own, but my lbs had one for about $7, so I just bought it.
I have one for my brooks finesse and its great. It fits much more snugly than in the pic (at least on women's width saddle), and the saddle feels 'normal' (i.e. you are not sliding around on a plastic bag), but it can really save the leather from a deluge. It packs tiny too.
I don't know about the cover, but I loved the videos about Brooks!

Actually, the things are not waterproof. So i use a plastic bag if my bike is sitting outside or is being transported in the rain. We bought them we tried to use them found them rather disappointing (maybe they have improved?)
so yeah, plastic bag for me. And if you wrap them right, they don't come off. I never used the seat cover while riding nor do i use a plastic bag in those circumstances.
I agree with Zen. If you NEED to part with $9, send it to me :)
OK I just read Bike Snob's blog on the same item...yes it makes sense to use a plastic bag...for sitting out...but it's probably better under the butt.
Shipping is free, it says.
I have one of those, got it in an LBS for $7. There are WAY more stupid bike accessories than that.
Mimi's right though- it's not really waterproof enough. So I sprayed it with some boot waterproofing spray I had- that helps a lot. It does fit brooks saddles perfectly and stays put.
But- yes I always have a plastic grocery bag in my saddlebag- never know when you might need to put something you find or buy into a bag to carry home (mushrooms and rescued turtles are two things that come to mind)....but the grocery bag slips around a lot on the saddle and wants to come off. So my solution is to put the grocery bag on the leather saddle, then slip the Brooks cover over it and cinch it closed- holds everything snugly in place and fits like a dream. Voila- total waterproof-ness and the two bags take up almost no space in my saddlebag and weigh next to nothing. Works well for me!
It's a rain cover but it's not waterproof?
It's 'water resistant', in that rain beads up on it and rolls off if you are inside a cafe or store and your bike is out in the rain. It keeps your saddle dry for that. But if you are sitting on it and riding in heavy rain, the wetness eventually gets mashed through. Yeah, they should really get a better material.
If you use it the way I do though, it works great and is well worth buying. :)
Let me see if I have this straight. The people that have this cover, like it, have already tried the bag thing and found that they are hard to keep on in some instances. These just pop on, no fuss, form fitting so the wind doesn't catch it, (was anyone even listening?) and yes, my saddle stays dry. Others who have never even tried it are telling those of us, who like it, that we are idiots and wasting our money, EVEN THOUGH they have never seen or used one? Why am I having a problem with this?
So if everyone is using the re-usable shopping bags (as indicated by the thread with the same name) then WHERE are the plastic ones coming from??? Does everyone have a 'secret stash' they didn't own up to in the other thread??? Why is it ok to use plastic bags on your saddle but not ok to use them while grocery shopping???
THESE, my friends, are the REAL questions! :D:D:D
:::snags popcorn from maillotpois and prepares to watch the thread implode:::
Oxys i know you're being silly, but i still have a mountain of plastic bags, most from before we were using reusable ones, but some that were put INTO my reusable bags.. many are from the shopping trips where we forgot our bags too.
oo
more thread drift. I have brought back plastic bags from Italy that disintegrate after a few months. Amazing to see!
I buy the reusable ones and then never ever have them where I need them... like in the grocery store. MOstly they just decorate the my closet floor.
Hence ending up with plastic ones.
Hey MP, pass the popcorn.
Just so everyone knows, I was joking . . . . .
FYI, there are several versions. I got the waterproof one, and as long as its on there my saddle has never gotten wet. I noticed they say the one I have doesn't fit women's saddle's but it fits great on my Brooks Finesse.
See this link, I have the top one:

i honestly *don't* have a stash of plastic bags, other than the ones that the newspaper comes in, and those are nowhere wide enough to fit on my brooks b68s. the few that i have, i use to line the trash can next to the litter box. i've gotten really good at using reusable bags at the grocery/target/etc, and if i do forget them, i get paper bags, which i then use to line the paper recycling bin. so i don't have a bunch plastic bags around to use to protect my seat, therefore i'm very glad to have my brooks saddle cover.
I've discovered that this makes fabulous popcorn and I use a lot less butter than with an air popper.
I myself like this for making popcorn, using a little canola or peanut oil at the bottom of the pan.
The cover is definitely waterproof, by the way- in case you get caught in the rain. :)

I had a bag in my left hand yesterday but the cashier had the stuff in a bag before I could blinke or remember to say something. I realized that even if I switched out, the bag would almost certainly just end up in the trash rather than containing the next person's stuff.
I get anickel for using my own bag. I save it up and buy a lottery ticket with every other dollar. (Helps motivate me to think remembering the bag will make me rich, snorkk..)
