I've decided to try GU (or something), but I figure there's probably some flavors/brands out there that should be avoided at all cost.
So...
What's your favorite brand?
Flavor?
Any other tips?
Much appreciated :)

Vanilla or orange, tho I hear espresso with chocolate is good.
Best Gu is vanilla!! Nothing else comes close. I find it hard to believe, but I actually like the stuff. And it is effective! Also decent-tasting is the strawberry-banana PowerGel. I thin most of the gels do what they're designed to do, but you have to find the flavor(s) you can stomach or you won't be inclined to suck them down when needed. Try a few and you'll probably find some that you like.

I tried vanilla GU once. It was quite palatable but I don't know if it helped me or not. Probably did. :)
I used Gu back when I rode endurance with my horses. Now I use Hammer Gel. The Apple Cinnamon is my favorite. The chocolate is good but a bit too thick for my tastes, it is almost like brownie batter. Ben uses that chocolate Hammer Gel. Each big container comes with a nifty little flask. That is handy.
Some endurance riders I know would use Eagle Brand milk. Yummy, but how useful is it? I don't know.
I make my own gu.... I am an ultra trail runner, comes in handy on my long runs.
1 can (300ml) of Eagle Brand Low Fat sweetend condensed partly skimmed milk
1 teaspoon cocoa powder.
mix well , voila
Ultimate makes containers just for "gu" and even comes with a nifty holder.
Much cheaper, and works just as good (if not better) than store bought Gu. I have been using this combo for years... would never go back to the store bought stuff... not only do you not have a wrapper to deal with, the Ultimate container is easy to use.

(just got back from a ride and feeling good!)
I've only tried Power Gel and Cliff Shots. Cliff Shots are WAY better! and the best flavour is sonic strawberry. it has added caffeine! yummy! :D they make a mocha mocha with caffeine, but I hate the taste of coffee  I just saw that they have a flavour I want to try Cola Buzz, also with caffeine.
On our last road trip we picked up several of the gel flasks. my intention is to mix flavours up for an epic ride. maybe chocolate with strawberry, etc.
as for how well they work...well, I haven't gotten that huge burst of energy, but if taken at just the right time, I've avoided that huge dip in energy that a lack of fuel will cause.... so, yes, I think they work. DH just tried two at a time. He said he REALLY felt it then! heehee
Namaste,

back from a ride, too and haven't felt this good in ages!!
Chocolate GU is the best. I think it's really yummy!
Yum!!! I love that stuff! Brings back memories of using it to make ice cream when I was a kid! Never thought of using it for riding!!! Two questions though - how long does it stay fresh after you've opened the can? And, for anyone who's lactose intolerant - any problems with this kinda stuff? Some foods are okay, some are definitely not, and i would hate to find out on the road!Quote:

I gag on the gooey stuff! And - if you try to use eagle brand milk or karo syryp you get the short term boost but not the longer lasting boost you get from a product with amino acids. That means you have shorter but higher and deeper spikes in your blood glucose levels.
Enervitene is my fave. I will do a goo pack of some kind if I have nothing else, but the enervitene is a liquid, not a goo and has some longer lasting slower burning stuff in it like the goos do. It tastes like a sprite and isnt sicky sweet like the goos.
Thom uses Apple flavor Carboom. I think it's okay, but too sticky.
V.
I buy what's on sale :D ! When I first started using goos, I tried a Gu pack, don't recall the flavor, for a grady, 16 mile, headwind return portion of an out and back - it made a world of difference!! A week later, same ride, tried Clif Shot, not nearly the same effect. Friends of mine who mtb 50-60 miles at a time on a regular basis rave about Enervit/Enervitene products. They have vitamin B3, which helps with the uptake of the carbs. I tried the cola flavored Enervit - it was really acidic, burned my throat, and tasted like hot Coca-Cola. Bleh. I don't know that I saw any greater results with Enervit than I do with Gu, and the cola flavor was really hard to gack down. The lemon-lime is also acidic, but not as bad.
I think the chocolate Gu tastes like brownie batter. Brownie batter is not something I eat IRL, but halfway through a 60 miler, a choclate goo goes down pretty easy. I have the metabolism of a sparrow when I exercise, so I always make sure to have goo on rides of over an hour and suck them down before I need them.
As detailed in some of my past posts about other performance enhancing substances (i.e., Red Bull), I prefer Crank E-Gel, which is apparently very very similar to Hammer Gel in content (the first ingredient is maltodextrin, not sucrose or fructose). The thing I like about the Crank E Gel is that it's thinner in consistency and therefore easier to swallow. I prefer the cherry flavor, though we also buy a box of the Mountain Rush every once in a while (I think it's a citrusy-something kind of flavor).
Yes, we buy the stuff by the case. I'm a big believer, though I require real, solid food on very long rides as well.
It's always interesting to read how different everyone is...I like the vanilla gu. I like the flavor of the chocolate, but can't stand it when I'm hot. I didn't mind the orange either, but my dh only likes vanilla and we buy the big boxes. The only other we've tried was Clif Shot and I thought it was horrible. I also like putting it in the flask so my hands and pockets don't get sticky.
What sort of a flask do those of you who use them use?
I saw those flasks the other day at the LBS, but I would like one that is a bit smaller - might have to look at the local drug store and see if they have an alternate squirt bottle that is a bit smaller.
The flasks made for gu are about a 5 or 6 oz bottle with the pull type squirt top on them - sort of like the ones on dish soap bottles. You buy gu by the big container and put it in the flask (although that has GOT to be a messy operation!) that way you can open the top with your teeth and squirt the gu in like that instead of trying to handle packets while you are riding. Sort of like a mini water bottle, but somwhat flattened so you can fit it in a jersey pocket.
I like ClifShots the best... have tried lots of different ones but ClifShots texture is like honey... and the vanilla one actually tastes like honey to me... I like almost all their flavors...
I CANNOT eat a bar on the bike... so stinkin' dry I end up guzzling most of my water to get 'em down... I WILL sometimes eat them prior to a ride tho, especially if it's been a few hours since eating... quicker than stopping to get a meal and effective....
Heh - it's 5.5 oz:

The gu flask fits easily in a pocket. I don't buy the big packets, though. I usually just put 2 or 3 in there at a time. It's not too messy to fill as I put the opening of the packet down in the flask. I'd rather be able to wash my hands at home.
Clifshots here. I love the Mocha Mocha which has caffeine, the Sonic Strawberry tasted like strawberry jam to me - and it has caffeine also. I did Not like the Cola Buzz....it tasted like a flat gooey Coke! My fav non-caffeinated are Chocolate and Vanilla. ClifShots has the no litter packet where the top stays attached to the packet but I would be very interested in a flask. My hands and Face get sticky from the packets, and then so do my pockets when I stuff the empty packets in them. It might be fun to get a flask and mix caffeinated and non-caffeinated flavors together and then just take a shot whenever.
When I did my century, I ate every hour alternating between enery bars and gel and eating a caffeinated gel every other time. ClifShots uses rice syrup instead of maltodextrin (which can upset my tummy).
When I first tried the sports gels out... I bought a bunch of different brands and flavors... to see what was best.
For me... the PowerBar, Power Gel, Respberry Cream... was the winner!
Tri-Berry Gu
I love the idea of the flask. we just bought some, and haven't tried them yet. I haven't done a long enough ride yet!! I usually need a gel by about 1 1/2 hours (so if I plan to be out for 4, I take one before I *need* it)...
I hate that sticky little-kid-caught-with-ice-cream-all-over-her-face feeling after sucking them back! I'm all for washing any off at home, if it is still messy... :o
And my total plan was to mix caffeine and non-caffeine flavours together. you never know which shot will give you the KICK!
I don't think we can get Gu here. Our favourite shop has something else, but I can't remember what it is. I'll be sure to try it and let you know what it compares to...
Namaste!

Thanks for all the input! I think I'm going to try vanilla GU and on of the Hammer Gels and compare the whole simple sugar/ maltodextrin thing.
I'm gonna write all your recommendations down so that if I don't like what I try I can go back to other recommended things. Thanks again!
I like Hammer Gel. It doesn't have a lot of sugar in it so it wont make you more tired later in the ride. I usually put a bunch in one of my water bottles, that way I dont have to carry anything, and I can be constantly taking in calories. It works great for me!
I tried adding gu to a water bottle - all I got was a little wadded up ball of crud at bottom of the water bottle - it was as if someone dropped wax in it! Im sure there are some gels that dissolve well in water - I might have to test that out and make a chart LOL
I don't use gels - I just think they're too pricy. I normally bring homemade healthy cookies (with added protein powder and such) from home and eat those on rides in lieu of buying energy bars and gels. Works for me...

I'm a Power Gel grrl... strawberry-banana (with caffiene :D ), and Powerbars (berry or malt) and Clff bars (choco-mint) all washed down with GatorAde.
spazz
gu makes me feel dizzy and disoriented, especially if I've got gatorade too. I used watered-down gatorade or I don't tend to drink enough...
Chocolate GU. Only stuff I like or use. You can buy it by the case online to save some beans. I think PowerGel is disgusting.
I also eat clif bars and powerbar powerbites.
