Hairless legs

Hello everybody. I am a male and I need help from women. I am trying to keep my legs hairless. Not really because I like biking, but because I think they look better and I don't like body hair.

I tried shaving, it left lots of razor bumps and irritation. I tried nair, that irritated my skin worse than shaving, but at least they were smooth. I was going to try waxing, but that is expensive and the home kits looks like disaster for me. The last option is using an epilator. Any opinions on epilators or should I just continue shaving and hope that my legs adapt to it?

I still want the focus of this topic to be on how to get rid of leg hair, but what do you guys prefer, hair on legs of men or not?

Give shaving another try, but here are a few hints:

-Use a good, sharp razor. Stay away from the cheapies. I love the men's mach 5.
-Take good care of said razor. Don't store it in the shower, and, after you use it, rinse it with some rubbing alcohol to prevent tiny rust pits.
- Get a good shave gel. Forget the cheap foam- go for something like Aveeno. It's gender-neutral, too.
-Shave last thing when you're in the shower. Be sure you've soaped & cleaned your legs well. This will give you a clean shaving surface and allow for the water to soften up the hair
-When you shave, only take a couple of strokes before you rinse your razor.
-Don't shave areas that get a lot of rubbing immediately before said rubbing occurs (in other words, don't shave something like your butt immediately before you are gonna sit on your bike)
- If this fails, try shaving down (with the hair) instead of up (against the hair). It won't be as close, but you've got less chance for razor burn.

P.S. Feel free to continue upwards. Hairless men are nice.

My mom gave me an epilator. I tried it twice, and it was torture! It didn't hurt her at all, so I guess it depends on your hair type. Her hair was a little thicker than mine.

I have waxed, and the good thing about that is the hair grows back thinner, but it is painful and expensive. Shaving is the easiest and gets good results. I shave every day.

As for hair on men's legs, I think no hair looks good on cyclists, but I don't mind hair, either.

Why don't you simply do what pleases you best?

With regards to technique, you'll find approximately as many suggestions as religions. Certainly you can find some information about it on the web somewhere else...

I thought trolls were supposed to be really hairy.

I guess I somehow offended some of you and I apologize. I've searched this topic on the internet, but the problem with posting this type of question in a male forum is that it will usually spin off into a debate whether or not if the guys who shave their legs are gay or not. I haven't talked to to many men who have tried epilators before, so I figured I would try to find out about personal experience with epilators from a female forum hoping that I would get more accurate experiences from them.

Thinking about it, I might have offended some of you by my, not because of biking comment. I love biking, but that's not why I am shaving my legs. That's what I meant by it. Basically I am shaving my legs becaue of personal preference, not because I bike.

I just reread my post and wanted to clarify that when I said what do you guys prefer, I am referring to the female members of this forum.

I buy what he's saying...cut him some slack...

I had to explain to my cousins kids that my legs were shaved because of cycling...not because I'm gay...

BUT, the reality is that for me to shave my legs means that I'm a cycling POSER since I'm not really that fast!:D

Transformer: Andrea's advice is best. When I do it, I use one of the new triple blade razors. In addition, the new alcoholic based hand sanitizers is great as an astringent afterward.

My hubby just uses an electric razor, no bumps or rashes. I have personally tried the epilator and I would not use it to torture even our worst enemies. It hurt sooooo bad and I have a high pain tolerance.

I don't know how I feel about a guy who shaves he's leg's. I hate shaving if I didn't have to i wouldn't. But i am in the public eye a lot with my job and it would offend people. I am ok with it but why wo:confused:uld you want to do that every other day.

My hubby does it because he turns into a forest of mud balls when he mountain bikes. I like hairy legs on men, but I have to agree that shaving makes a lot of sense for him -- and our shower drain.

transformer1, I understand why you're asking on this forum but I've seen plenty of rational discussion between men on this topic on both www.bikejournal.com and the serotta forums. You just have to pick your company.

I bought the norelco bodygroomer, it's an electric shaver and trimmer, hoping that would do the trick. It doesn't irritate my skin, but the next day there is visible stubble like I didn't even shave the day before, not to mention it takes a long time to shave the legs. As for other parts of the body, the bodygroomer rocks, no cutting or pain.

I tried this topic in mens health and it started to get off topic, which is why I tried this forum.

I bought an epilator once (made by Grundig I think? some German company). I tried, I tried to like it, but it was just too painful. I also feel that I have a high pain tolerance.

Electric shavers don't give a very close shave.

Regular old razors (well, I use a Gillette Venus Divine... I know, silly marketing) work best I think (assuming waxing is out). Way back when I was young and first started shaving I used to get lots of razor rash, but I don't anymore even if I just shave with soap & water (rather than shave cream, which I used to buy religiously). I think your skin gets tougher.

But Mr. Silver, I would have alligator skin if I used alcohol-based gel on my legs every day!!! I think this might work if you don't shave very often, but if you are shaving every day or every other day, this is likely to really dry out your skin.

Triple blade razors really do the trick for me.

I use the Bic "Soleil." The same razor is marketed to men in a nicy manly blue-green color (can't remember the name, sorry). Not too expensive, like a pack of 4 for $3 or $4. The handle is a great shape for maneuvering over ankles and shins and such.

Wax or epi. After a few times, it really doesn't hurt at all.

I use an epilator. Emjoi is the brand (mine is a super old model - called Gently Gold - don't know if they still make it or not). I only use it on the upper leg where there is less hair and where it's a bit more coarse (on me...which is why I remove it). I barely notice the pain now but it's been about 10 years that I've been doing it. It's about the same pain as waxing, but it's much less messy and way cheaper. It is a bit time consuming, but it lasts 4 - 5 weeks for me.

I tried it once on the lower leg and it was to bloody painful. For that part, I use a razor.

Just like shaving your face man. Hop out of the shower and get to it while the hair you want to shave is still wet. Slap on some good shaving cream and commence to depilating. Remember that it takes way longer to shave your legs than face, so you may need to use something to keep the hair on the leg you aren't doing nice and soft.

And regarding men shaving things other than their face. My porn-star buddy shaves his entire body. A lot of the younger guys I went to my Officer Basic Course with shaved their chest, bellies and legs.

Good point...when I do it, I'm at best once a week...but I also find that these new hand sanitizers don't dry me out as much.

I use them frequently each day at the office without any ill effects on my hands.

OFF TOPIC NOTE ON HAND SANITIZERSs: Read the label...says they kill 99.99% of most common germs...what is 99.99% of MOST? I know what 99.99% of ALL is...but 99.99% of MOST?:confused::confused::o

I always shave *in*the shower (as I believe most women do), rather than after it. Makes for longer showers, but you avoid the problem BIAK describes here.

I run an inch or two of water in the tub and shave before my shower. Conserves a LOT of water, plus it's so much easier to shave sitting down. (Then I do the calluses on my feet, too.)

On the marketing of the pink razors: the Gillette Mach 3 razor cartridges ("men's") fit the Venus handles and give a MUCH closer and more comfortable shave. For the same price. Plus, since the cartridges aren't individually wrapped, there's less packaging waste. How 'bout THAT? (But the shower rack only works with the women's cartridges.)

So anyway, just like BIAK, I don't go to too much trouble--I shave in the shower with soap and water and the old-school blue Gillette disposable. I never have razor burn, even after a winter of not shaving for about 3 months, and sometimes with the razor that was hanging in there from last summer.

I do have stubble the next day, though. You're not going to get away from that unless you wax, I suppose.

My husband uses Mach 3s (on his face only), and I can't believe how EXPENSIVE those blades are! But he can grow hair like a demon, except on his head. I guess it's important to have the right tool for the job.

Thanks everybody for the numerous replies. I keep on hearing that the mach 3 and venus are the razors to use. I still have to decide. I heard waxing is the best, but like i said, it is very expensive. Since an epilator does what what waxing does, I figure that would work the best. But that has gotten lots of painful reviews and I watched some of the videos form you tube of guys using them, ouch.

Anyway, I wax myself, the kits are cheap and very easy to use and it does not hurt.

OOOOH. Thanks for that information OakLeaf. I use the Venus razor, too, so I'll have try those blades. I have the leg equivalent of a five o'clock shadow and have to shave everday. Well, I don't have to. I choose to....

Egads! That is the BEST news I've heard all day. Now I can stop stealing my husband's Mach 3 which I have been coveting for so long. I had about given up on finding a good women's razor. I hated how they put that stupid little wire guard on so many of the ones out there. Guess I can throw away all my other razors now and get a Venus and hawk my husband's razors from him. :D

You don't have to be fast to shave your legs--it's much easier to clean out road rash without hair in the way.

I shave my legs in the shower, and just use regular hair conditioner. Also a cheap, disposable razor. Your skin toughens up after a bit, and it won't irritate anymore. LOVE the hairless leg look of male cyclists! Hair on legs seems sort of uncouth to me now...:rolleyes:

It has everything you will need to know. One tip I can add, I get in grown hairs sometimes; if I pinch the skin around the hair and shave that spot it will remove the hair.
