A new way to catch spider's.

Ok so I am hanging out at NPR this morning. actually I am at the science friday web site.
I tend to remove spiders from my house. I know some kill them , some flush them down a toilet etc... But I tend to try and take them outside if I can. I don't know I guess I feel it is hard enough to try a survive this world when you are our size but think of what they have to try and do. So even though I am not a fan of them I do respect their right to live. It doesn't always work out though when I try and take them outside. Some do parish in the process.

That is so cute! I love that it even comes with a plastic spider to practice on!

That's funny. I saw it in a magazine the other day. What a clever invention.
My best tried and true spider catcher is still my foot (ok- not so much a catcher, but a killer). I was once bitten by a brown recluse, and the scar it left after eating my flesh is ugly. I kill all spiders in fear of being bitten again. Sorry, spiders. :rolleyes:

I use the vacuum cleaner myself :cool:.

Then I don't have to get too close...

A (large) piece of paper scooted underneath them works for most, if they're near enough to a door or window to carry them outside.

A jar or plastic container over them, and a piece of cardboard slid underneath to close it, works for many more.

The ones that are so shy that I can't get near enough to catch them, are so shy that they will never get near enough to bite me. And a few spiders in the house help keep the insects down :cool:

I was raised believing it's bad luck to kill a spider. I have no compunction about mosquitoes or cockroaches ;) but I don't like to kill anything that isn't threatening me or my home.

My grammy always told us that if you killed a spider, it would rain.

We're pretty good at the cup + paper catch/release. (I always wonder what the bug thinks about that.) It doesn't work for the millipedes that come up from the basement when it gets real dry down there. Some of them are the size of lobsters - or seem so, in their alien-ness - and are too soft-bodies to endure catch & release. So we put our hands over our eyes and chant, "go back downstairs, go back downstairs!"

I don't have a problem killing ants! That's for sure! But spiders are different. I don't like black widos though. Outside I will kill them. I have a nasty scar on my arm from one.

I never ever kill spiders. my house is home to many of the genus Pholcus, a water loving guy who I often find waiting for me in the bathtub.
I just get a piece of tp, he climbs on it and I relocate him.

I'm a "catch and release" person myself. :p

Of course I had to google Pholcus....Daddy Long Legs!! I get them, but not as often as the small blond spideys. Dixie bathroom cup and a piece of paper, off to the garden they go.

Someone told me the other day that spiders are so abundant that even in your house and when you can't see them, you are never more than 10 feet away from at least one.

The arachnophobic person sitting next to me immediately stood up and moved herself to the center of the room!

That reminds me of the old joke: "I read that most accidents happen within 5 miles of home. So I moved."

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that doesn't kill spiders. I either relocate them outside or let them stay around if their web is behind some furniture or something.

LOL! My hubby would love this tool. I'm the official spider picker upper around here. One time a big tarantula came across our driveway and I ran to get a plastic bowl to trap him. I am so fascinated with them and wanted a close-up view of them. My husband would have no part of it. :eek:

There was a spider in the bath the other day. I "convinced" it (with the help of a piece of toilet paper) to crawl under the storage door and, please, stay there for the duration of my shower. The bikes (in the storage) always enjoy company. But I'm too shy to allow a spider to see me naked in the shower!

In the fall when we have many in the place I just don't have the heart to put them outside. I just put them away from view. :)

I think the wolf spiders make good company. I have some large ones that like to hang out in the garage. Here's a neat picture of one:

I have a rather hands-off approach to all critters with more than 4 legs.
If I see something that doesn't belong...I usually scream like a little girl until DH comes by and removes it (grumbling and complaining, and rolling his eyes the whole time). Depending on the season, it either goes out the front door or down the terlet. Strange to think I was a biologist. But then....fish don't have more than 4 legs. I can handle anything....as long as it doesn't have more than 4 legs! :rolleyes:

I don't want to touch a fish. Heh, go figure.
