It was really long, it seems like 30 or 40 seconds. Mr. felt it too.

Dang, I slept through it here. People in Louisville (25 miles to the west) felt it as well. All seems okay out this way.
So what are you doing awake now? ;)
How weird it was! I felt it in Bloomington thinking we had strong winds (as I heard the walls responding like to a hard wind!)
Then, Silver called... So I felt it at least 120 miles away!
This is the 3rd 4.5+ quake in Southern Indiana in 5 years. The last one was 5.0. This one is a 5.4!
We left Memphis to get away from the New Madrid fault...and have experienced 3 quakes since...
Check the map...weird seeing a big block in the midwest!

I'm going to Champaign/Urbana today...interesting to see how much they felt it there.
We felt it in Richmond, shook the dresser, etc...

Woke up to the sound of something rattling. Initial reaction, since we live in an old farmhouse and it's been extremely windy the past few days, was, "Man, listen to that window rattle!" Quickly deduced that the sound was not the window, had just started to get out of bed to investigate, when the bed started shaking. Thought DH was having a seizure and had just reached for him when he startled awake and sat up, reaching for the cat that he thought was having a seizure. (We used to own a deaf, epileptic cat -- the response was not without precedent.)
I felt it in central Missouri. Up early and I couldn't figure out why my dishes were rattling. It was very subtle, the house was creaking and earthquake crossed my mind as I knew my coffee pot wasn't doing it. I forgot about it until the news came on. Yes, it did last awhile!

What a weird way to wake up! I was thinking "why is my honey jumping up and down on the bed in the middle of the night?". :p

Speaking as an ol' Californian: 5.4 is not small. Big, in fact, though a long ways short of The Big One. Last 5.4 in my home town lead to several buildings being condemned due critical cracking in supporting walls.
I just got to work and am not looking forward to touring the Stacks. I'm guessing there'll be a bit of a mess in the compact (meaning electric/mobile) shelving on our west side.Quote:

I definitely felt it. Very odd sensation at 4:37 am. Two of my three boys slept right through it. One said he thought I was trying to wake him up too early.
Woke up to hear about this on the radio. This on the 102nd anniversary of the San Franciso '06 great quake.

I think I remember reading somewhere that there has never been an earthquake in North Dakota.
Another plus is that there is plenty of daylight for evening rides...in the summer it stays light until nearly eleven at night!
Here is calfornia it seems like most quakes are in the early morning. I swear that is what is going to kill me. My heart races like crazy when I get woken up like that.Quote:

It was a big one but thankfully only one person was killed. There are still buildings here that need retrofitting and have warning signs on the front doors telling you you are entering an unsafe building. scarey:eek:
I am very glad you are all safe and no one was hurt! Tired but not hurt! Think of it as mother's natures way of letting us know just how small we really are here.

I am glad to hear that all is well with everyone. The only quake I was in was over 15 years ago. I thought a huge delivery van was coming down the street.
The USGS has been reporting aftershocks all morning, none of which could be felt here in east-central Indiana. But, about half an hour ago, the walls and furniture were shaking again so I imagine that was a pretty big one. Way cool!
And we continue to drift... This is my sixth year. Love it!! But, I have very motivated learners who devour every book in sight and who are constantly adding work to their assignment sheets. Makes it tough to keep up with them, but I wouldn't have it any other way!Quote:

It seems nowhere is really immune from earthquakes.
The first one I ever felt was when I was living in a suburb of Boston during grad school - the epicenter was in southern Maine.
Although I live in earthquake land now - near the Hayward fault, no less! :eek: - I console myself with the fact that our region is more prepared for it than most. kinda sorta.
St. Louis felt it too! Both of them. The 5.2, and the one we had an hour or so ago, 4.5. Very interesting sensation. I did like a lot of you, thought it was my cat. And then maybe my brother walking around (mobile homes have very interesting floor movement), and then I checked outside to see if it was a tornado. Just an earthquake. It is very interesting to realize your house is only sitting on concrete blocks and held down with a metal tie...
We didn't feel it and I'm surprised. We are sitting on one of the most active faults in the US--the New Madrid fault. :eek:
Dad and I were talking about earthquakes the other day. He thinks that with all the flooding the water will lubricate the plates which will cause more movement. http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/s...scared0016.gif
I didn't feel the aftershock. I was walking through Target and heard employees speaking about it. Oh, well. Just more to chit chat about.
My husband thought I was shivering and shaking the bed but then he realized the sliding closet doors were rattling, as was all the stuff sitting on dressers, tables, etc.
Sounds like a little of the Kingshighway bridge crumbled but that's all I've heard of so far.
He felt the aftershock but I was spinning so I was only feeling the suffering.
I was in Champaign/Urbana today and didn't feel the aftershock...maybe it happened while I was in route.
Hey Andrea...when the big one hits on New Madrid fault...Mud Island won't be the only liquification problem. Almost all of NW TN is prone to liquification. That's where Reelfoot Lake came from.
