hegemony

Hmm, is this a new and interesting vocabulary test or are you trying to flush out individual's political and social opinions? ;) Fer instance, who thinks the Mormon Church is hegemonic in Ootah? Which of us think the Bush Neo-cons are hegomonists? There's definitely hegemony going on in Irag, Sudan, etc., etc., etc.
There, you happy? What's our next word? :)
DH says....
The hegemony of American car makers evaporated in the new millenium.
and...
The expensive gift went beyond his usual avuncular advice.
Please note, I am *not* the vocab hero in this household.
Not being an English major, I mostly know the word "hegemony" from sociological works on hegemonic masculinity -- i.e. certain standardized, stereotypical male gender roles that may only exist in people's minds yet nevertheless dominate there to the point that all alternatives (i.e. everybody to some extent or another) are seen as somehow deviant. And btw, the guy who first wrote about that has since become a gal.
I think I heard "hegemony" on the Friday News roundup on NPR :o
The dominant male hegemony within the business world disadvantages women in succeeding in their own right.
hey i only know that word from a dar williams song, but i still really don't know what it means... not sure i can tell either from the other sentences, anyone want to explain it to me??
Hegemony: dominance, especially by one state or social group over others.
"In a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom, recent studies reveal that female bicyclists have established hegemony over the entire Internet."
so where's the next word?
Incipient
use it in a sentence.
I have an incipient case of bike lust for ehirsch83's Litespeed Bella. Dammit.
Try this:
http://www.google.com
then in the search box type:
define:supercalifragilistic
or any word of your choice.
It will provide definitions in your language (i.e. the language of your browser) first and offer you definitions other languages too.
It's not authoritative, but really useful. :)
absquatulate
Hint: something salsabike might be tempted to do
Somebody absquatulated with all my Scharffenberger and beer!
I guess all you guys are on vacation already!
(Some of us do not have sinecures, you know, and have to work for a living!)
So you're saying we're footling?
No, just indulging in oitiose activities!
I, on the other hand, am assiduously sedulous.
(and anyway, I was an anthropology major!)
Isn't that redundant? Assiduously sedulous.
Absolutely! And repetitive too! (They might even have the same root, and if I had time, you know I'd look it up!)
But, like I said, I was an anthropology major!
(OK - that was fun, and now I really need to get back to work!)
Carry on, you lot! I'd like to see 100+ posts next time I check in!
Careful, you'll be committing epeolatry
The hegemony of America over Iraq cannot be sustained (and I'm a republican!):o
The word is:
deuteragonist
Let's have a sentence that uses it in a cycling context....
one might think that Floyd Landis was the protagonist in our sad story of the last tour de france, but instead he was the deuteragonist, playing second fiddle to the French psyche to the USA.
I think we should institute a rule, ok, a guideline, or a suggestion, maybe a hint, that when one provides a sentence using the suggested word, s/he needs to suggest the next one. Sort of verbal tag . . . :D
And, where is zen since she started this mayhem?
