Pics of my road rash..Look at your own risk!

I know it probably pales in comparison to what ya'll have been through...but here is my intitaiaion.....I'd rather go though child birth again then deal with with this road rash:( I have a HUGE black eye, and we realized after looking at my helmet that it totally cracked on the right side where I hit. After seeing halo's for an hour after leaving the E.R. I knew is was just the concusioun.

Yeah, definitely keep it moist and uncovered as much as you can bear it.

At least you're ok, that is all that matters.

I think there will be a collective cringing here at the pictures but again, you're ok and that is most important.

Well, it just really sucks that you can't go out on a nice evening and have a nice ride. Thank goodness for the great Doc's here and their understanding that I don't like medication, I've been dealing with it ok....

Road rash is soooooo painful. I hope you're feeling better soon and I'm glad you were't hur too seriously.:o

It IS painful. I've had similar rashes on my knees and elbows, but never on large surfaces or on my face. Aaaah! Poor you.

You'll get fresh new skin in the end but boy! is the process painful!

Look after that grazing as it can turn septic very quickly. I had a graze a bit like that years ago - and I had to get antibiotic gauze put on it.

How did it happen? (hope having a chuckle's not too painful for your face)...I fell off my platform shoes:o

Has the driver of the van been charged by the police? I hope he has. He's obviously a menace on the roads:mad:

Oh my! How awful! Did that driver even realize what he'd caused to happen? Some drivers are a real menace. It's chilling to think how much worse it could have been without the helmet.

You might want to try Brave Soldier for the road rash - it's great stuff. Some bike shops have it, but there is a dealer locater on the website if you poke around there you'll find it. I thought you could get it here at TE, but I'm not finding it right now. Warning - there are also some fairly graphic photos of serious road rash.

I had some pretty serious burns on my legs last summer, and this stuff along with some pricey large moist bandages (Spenco Second Skin) worked wonders. No scars.

I definitely believe in the moist dressing philosophy. Keep it moist so the bandages don't stick, and whatever you do, don't let them scab over and dry up. They are much more painful that way.

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! that just sent pains up my shins! I hope you heal up quickly. Thank goodness you had your helmet on, I'm sure it saved you much more damage to your face and likely your life.:eek:

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm not going to lie, I'm hurting BAD, my mother came down to watch the little on because my right eye is swollen shut right now. My helmet....even though it cracked saved me, BUT, I'm definatley spending money on a much better one. Moist dressing, YES, I will do that because pealing them off this morning, was HORRIBLE!!!
I didn't mean to post them to gross anyone out, but I'm SO sick of people not giving cyclist the room or space we need, I wasn't even ON THE ROAD!!

{{{{Jenn}}}} I have seen road rash but it never gets easier to see. Take care of yourself, I am glad you have a helper for the little one.

It hurts so bad! I know...... been there, as have many others. Healing vibes coming your way.

I had a crash - due to an almost-miss by a car - and lost quite a bit of skin off of my face. My Dr. compared it to a third degree burn and actually prescribed a burn ointment for me. Once it was not scabbed over any longer, I used pure Vit E Oil constantly. When it would soak in, I'd put more on. If you look closely nowadays, you can see the worst spot on my face, where I lost the deepest skin. But normally, no one would ever know. The first year after, I had to protect that new skin diligently. No cold air in the winter and no sun in the summer. So I advise gentle but attentive care to your wounds. They'll heal and in time, you won't hardly remember they are there.

BTW, you didn't gross me out. They were great, from a YOU ROCK standpoint. Chicks are so cool aren't they! Say, didn't we have a "post your injuires" thread awhile ago?

Poor Jenn! Nasty looking. But I know you will heal well. Try to rest completely for a day or two. Don't get up too quickly if you are lying down- the rushing blood to your legs and head will be painful...get up slowly when you do.
Are you putting some cold packs on your head and eye?

Thanks Lisa, yes, I'm icing EVERYTHING and keeping Neosporin and other things on there. I just HATE the way this pain medicine is making me feel...UGH..I HATE meds, I don't know what it worse the pain, or the awful feeling I get when I take meds.

Jenn, I know this sounds a little weird -- take pictures of your injuries every day for the next week or so. It's interesting!

A couple of years ago, DH broke his hand skiing, and my mom lives 1500 miles away, and of course, being a mom, she wanted her daily updates. We had the x-rays for a few days, to take with him to the surgeon who said it didn't need any, and casted it, so we scanned those for mom (she was delighted! really! we moms understand this, but it's still amazing that it continues even when the kids are nearing 50!), and then had to take pictures every day so she could keep an eye on how he was healing. Looking back at the pictures afterward is interesting -- watching the progression of the bruising. I don't think we noticed the actual progress as much in real life as when we looked at the pictures from the day before, etc.

Yes, DH was a bit annoyed with me the first few days, and especially on that first day, when he was sitting around pouting and hurting big time, but then he got used to "it's time to take the picture for mom" -- I think that was easier than trying to learn to write and buckle his seat belt with that cast on! He even started looking forward to seeing the pictures too!

And while you're taking pictures, let your family take good care of you! OUCH!

Jenn....your photos brought back memories. You must be hurting. If it is any consolation, I could not take pain meds when I fractured my shoulder. Yes, I had some of the road rash you have. They gave me something in the ER which made me feel real sick. I think it was Vicadin (sp?) My husband took me back to the hospital at 2am the following morning because we thought I might have a concusion, but it was just the pain meds. Needless to say, I did not take anything else accept for motrin.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Go to a medical supply store and purchase
Tegaderm. It is like the Spenco Second skin but comes in larger sheets. I put it on my road rash last year (very similar to your locations) and they healed up quickly.
