But, do you wax or pluck. I tried to pluck ONE hair last night, and just about died, my eye started watering my freaking eyebrow swelled up. I came into the den and DH said what did you hit your head on.:rolleyes:
So, I'm mustering up the nerve to go get them waxed, then I've heard it's easier to maintain by plucking once you've got the "major" stuff removed. Unfortunately I have the Brooke Shield type thick eyebrows, so I hope they have ALOT of wax!:D
Jenn, I get myself done once a month at the beauty salon: hair, toenails, face and leg wax, and that includes waxing and shaping the brows. I don't get a manicure because I am always out in the garden, or playing with my pets and of course the bike grease, all of which is more important to me than pretty fingernails.
I love the leg wax because it makes wearing cycling shorts so much easier.
I am getting up the courage to start having my armpits waxed too because I will probably be wearing sleeveless jerseys a lot this summer.

Armpits!! You are a BRAVE woman, gosh I wish I had the guts to do that, that would be wonderful!! I'm also TRYING to build myself up to go get a pedicure...I have a foot issue.
Well, if you can handle all that waxing I SURELY can at LEAST get my eyebrows done, although, maybe all the hair is what is keeping the sweat out of my eyes....hahha:D
I wax my own brows and upper lip. First couple of times are a PITA. But you get used to it. If necessary, numb up with ice.

Awww, thank you Grog! Well, ironically I asked my mom where she gets her's waxed even though they are to thin and she uses a pencil they look nice. She said Jen, I don't get them done, they are just falling out....:rolleyes: So, maybe if I just wait long enough they'll start to thin on their own.:D
I sometimes get them waxed to get the shape I want, them keep them plucked. Easier and less painful that way. My eyes water too. Jenn
I've been plucking my eyebrows since college; want to try having them waxed someday when I have extra cash.
I swore I'd never do it (OUCH! the first few times I tried) but once I realized what a difference it made, I became a believer.
You get used to it. The pain is worth the gain in my case.
I used to get my lip and brows done at the salon. Then I discovered these pre waxed strips. I love them. Right after the shower when everything is soft. I take care of it all myself. I apply a high quality lotion (or a dab of neosporin) on the lip immediately after waxing and suffer no adverse effects. It barely even turns pink anymore.
Tip: Trim the strips carefully before applying to above or below brows. The good news is - if you forget, it'll grow back in no time! :eek:
I quit shaving and plucking years ago. DH likes my soft furry animalistic tufts!
Now that I am used to the look of soft natural human body hair, believe it or not when I see women with totally bald underarms and/or stubble legs it looks very peculiar and creepy to me. :rolleyes: I am so GLAD to not worry about all that stuff anymore and spend time on it.
I trim my eyebrows with scissors. Comb against the grain very slowly, and snip all the hairs that stick up beyond the comb.
I have Andy Rooney eyebrows, very long and curly. I also have a bizarre twisted hairy scar in the center of one brow from a biking accident. I had them waxed once, but then realized that simply trimming them made them look just as neat and tidy. (and it's a whole lot cheaper and doesn't hurt my delicate skin)
I do have 3 or 4 persistant rebels that grow way outside the brows that I pluck.
I shave my upper lip, cuz dang it I have a moustache! I think getting that waxed would hurt me, too. My skin isn't very hearty.
I do both too...
But its very cheap at the military facilities..only like $10 to get the brows done. I do it once every few months then pluck until I get bored of plucking and forget about it then go back in to get them waxed.
There's no way i am pulling hairs out of my eyebrows! I have hardly enough as it is.
way back when my mother was concerned about these things, she used to lament my uncurved brows.. But now i wear them proudly, as my father had them, his father had them, and half a dozen Italian cousins have them too.

I of the brooke brows as well, treat them according to mood, but I think I have a pretty high pain threshold. The hurt does ease up over time.
I've had my brows waxed for years. Brow growth is when I get my hair cut.
I always sucked at plucking my eyebrows. I've had them waxed a couple different times, but never kept it up. I've had my legs waxed too, I don't think either brows or legs hurt.
It's your choice whether you want to be a fur bearing woman or not - either way, it will grow back.;)

I found waxing not as painful as the tweezer. It only takes 15 minutes and looks much better than when I torture myself!

I'll pluck my eyebrows a little when I feel like it, it doesn't hurt much, but I HATE plucking hair off my upper lip. It HURTS! Since having a child I still get dark skin patches on my upper lip so I look like I have a moustache anyway, so I try to remove hairs there so the effect isn't double. In summer the hairs are bleached white so happily they have the opposite effect :)
Plucking yer lip is much more painful than waxing. At least with waxing you get it over in one fell schwack!
I get my eyebrows plucked at a local place. I have very fair, sensitive skin and had a few times where the wax burned my brow. What's the point in having a nice looking brow with a burn mark?? They have seperate wax for sensitive skin, but I guess mine is really sensitive because it still burned. If you have sensitive skin, I would highly recommend finding a place that plucks them. They'll give you a nice shape that you can maintain yourself. I will never go back to wax after getting them professionally waxed!
I get my eyebrows professionally waxed every 3-4 weeks. I've never done them myself because I think it's hard to get them looking symmetrical from eyebrow to eyebrow on your own--just IMHO...I'm crooked and lopsided LOL doing work like that :)
It doesn't really hurt. I'm sensitive and a big wimp, but I'm used to it know. I didn't start getting my done until I was 30 years old :)
Having a nice brow makes it easier for applying eyeshadow, etc. It really opens your eyes up and makes you look awake and fresh :)
I effing hate my eyebrows. I can't 'shape' them because only the little bit closest to the middle is thick enough to be 'shapeable'... after that it's thin but spread out. I 'shape' it and it sort of disappears or looks crooked b/c of the permanent, natural part. Eww. But I have always tweezed them myself. Mom was a beautician in a former life and told me to warm things up and open the pores first with a hot, moist compress. It limits the amount of damage done when plucking. Then, one at a time and *with* the grain or you're going to raise h*ll some more.
A dab of alcohol (*YOW!*) after both tweezing and waxing will prevent infected pores and zits etc...) finish up with a non-greasy antiseptic or lotion like eucerin.
I can't have my eyebrows waxed. I have a nasty, nasty reaction and am red for hours, after which I get a ton of white bumps everywhere. Sometimes I even get this reaction from plucking.
I want to do electrolysis someday, but it is expensive. *sigh*

OTG, if you really really wanted it, they have different types of wax and you might not react to a different one. I need to go, it's been since November! In fact today when I was riding, a guy accidently brandished a weed-whacker at me and I thought it was a personal statement.
I've pretty much waxed everything there is to wax at one point in my life. I get bored and, I don't know. I haven't done underarms but I hear it doesn't really hurt that much. For those who have trouble with the waxing hurting, go somewhere good and remember it's like wind or climbing hills, it ends and pretty darned quickly too :D
There was a woman that I used to work with that was of some middle-eastern descent. She had to wax her whole face!!! I don't think her forehead but her cheeks and stuff.
With eyebrows, I have found that I am not clever enough to make them even and symmetrical. Plus, I tend to find hairs that irk me so I start pulling and before I know it I have bald spots :o
I'm a plucker.. of eyebrows and armpits. I don't trust anyone to wax anything on my body.
armpit plucking seems logistically awkward not to mention time consuming. All hairs? Or just pesky ingrown ones?
Pluck the eyebrows. Shave any other unwanted hairy areas. Tho' I've noticed, as I age, that my hair grows less agressively. Yay! There needs to be some advantages to aging!

shhhhhh, now we don't want DH to learn the true meaning of waxing, do we? I've been able to slide thus far and would hate to give up precious riding time for, ugh, housework!
My mom plucked her eyebrows for years and year. She grew up in the late 50s and early 60s when they style was super thin eyebrows, much as it is now. Well, by the time she hit her late 40s, early 50s, she'd been plucking for so long that they hardly grew anymore, and she found herself using an eyebrow pencil to draw 'em back on.
A few years ago she tired of that, especially since brow pencil tends to smear when she sweats.
Soooo, she had new, perfectly shaped eyebrows tattooed on. And if you didn't know they were a tattoo, you would NOT even register that they weren't real. They're that good.

So, I did it. Went to an Indian salon, and had my eyebrows threaded. It was a very different feeling than waxing or plucking. I thought it was less painful, but I've been waxing for a few years, so I'm desensitized to it. I usually get these itchy red bumps after waxing. This itched and was red for about two hours, but it's great now.
Susan -- I have permanent eyeliner. I love it. It's not too heavy at all, just makes it look like my eyelashes are thicker than they are.
If we keep plucking in a nice natural shape, will they eventually just stay that way?
I'm just the opposite! As I age my hair colonizes parts of my body where it DOESN'T BELONG!!! And it gets thicker and longer and curlier! Yet, the hair on my head is still baby fine and limp as a wet noodle.Quote:

Just for "hours"? Lucky you. I get nasty red bumps for 5-6 days, after I get my brows waxed. I can't believe I went back not once, not twice, but three times (different salons) because they each said, "oh, we use a different wax, you'll be fine," or "just make sure to use this creme for several days afterwards." After each time my DH dropped his jaw in disbelief, his smart wife being so silly as to undergo this treatment multiple times in the name of a nice clean browline-which lasts about four weeks, before the blonde fuzzies blur it.Quote:
