Closure - Another rant on my burglary

I just can't seem to get closure.

This morning I discovered another thing stolen - a pair of earrings. Apparently they left all my jewelry - but this one pair of earrings. Amusingly, one of the least expensive pairs of nice earrings I have.

But they were my 30th birthday present from Thom.

The discovery did bring back a nice memory. I was sick on my birthday and we went to the local diner for dinner so I could have some soup. He gave me the earrings at the diner. It was romantic in a kitschy sort of way. :)

As Thom said this morning, "Thank god you have a good class, because otherwise your head would have exploded by now."

I am so stressed out. Constantly tired, no energy. :(

So off to face another day.

Mate you need to give yourself some time and get plenty of rest. Its no little thing to have your house broken into and it will take awhile mentally for you to recover. Pamper yourself.

what trek said! i think we expect ourselves to be super resilient and bounce back from these things quickly.... but it takes time. And little things like finding another thing missing will bring it all up again.

So sorry you had to go through this. I truly wish the sucky people in the world would just bother each other instead of the rest of us :mad:

It has been several years since our last breakin, yet there are times I get disappointed that I no longer have something I treasured. I am trying to not get "attached" to "things", but you know, there are "things" that were given to you, that you won, that were part of your "history" that you can't forget. To give them away, to sell them, that's one thing, but to have them "stolen" is something entirely different. The intrusion on one's life...that is something that isn't easily forgotten and will take time....

I think I just got a tiny taste of what you're going through - thank goodness no one broke into our home. However, apparently someone got our credit card number (somehow) and actually made cards. They then used them for loads of computer purchases, etc. So...now for all of the changing online access, making sure they didn't get more personal information, etc.

No where near what you're going through, but spooky nevertheless.....

I'm sorry that happened! I don't know much about all this - im only 12 but I know what its like to think you have something and then remember its gone. It SUCKS. Our house burnt down about 3 years ago and i remember how for a while afterwards everything was different and weird but it got normal again. it will for you too im sure. Atleast as normal as before :)

V, you've every right to be disappointed.

Hell, I had a mini-fridge stolen with my favourite ice wrap still inside. Haven't found one like it since. I still miss it! A $10 ice pack!

Along with the fridge, a painting of mine was stolen, and later found smashed to pieces. I'm no artist, but I worked on that painting for a week straight. It was a portrait of my horse. Thankfully all the pieces turned up, so I was able to re-mount it. But now when I look at it the original aura (to reference Walter Benjamin) is lost and tainted by the cracks through it that remind me of the hateful and careless action.

The monetary value of a thing is one thing, but we all have treasures that allow us to relive a memory in some tangible way.

Still, I was humbled by something my grandfather said last week. We were talking about what a rough year it's been for him--he lost his wife and shortly after had to move to a full-time care facility. He is selling his cottage.

He said, "the last time I closed the door to the cottage, I didn't regret it one bit. And you know why? Because I still have all those memories with me, and I will always carry those."

My family's summer cottage burned to the ground on Sunday. 4 generations of family mementos are gone. There is nothing but ashes, a chimney, and about a million coil springs from all the mattresses & box springs just lying in wait to jump out and bite you. My family owned that house for 90 years. I've lived in 6 different houses in my lifetime, but I went back there every summer. That is the house that was always home to me. Now it's nothing.

At least I still have the memories of all the good times up there. When I lose those, I won't be remembering much of anything so I guess it won't matter by then.

withm, that is so sad. I am so sorry for your loss. It will take a long time to get over losing something with so many memories as a family summer home. Best wishes to you and your family, and my thoughts are with you. I simply can't imagine....

I'm sorry about your house! My house is 110 years old and I keep saying blessings over her to live another 50...til I get too old to take care of myself. Today she was hit by a tree, but it was a minor scrape. Your post reminds me of her mortality.

But yes memory is an incredible thing, and what brings back happy memories and has meaning. V, I hope you journal these things as well.

Thistle, yes wouldn't it be great if sucky people would burgle each other? whole thing makes me question karma.

My heart breaks for you! I've had to deal with the same thing you are, and it's really hard. There are days and moments where it all comes flooding back. Time will help to fade the pain, but a part of the violation will always be there. Give yourself a break. Think of it as overcoming an injury. Healing takes time.
And know that we are all here to give you a big ol cyber hug whenever you need one!! ((((huggy))))))

We spent the weekend doing some shopping and some construction.

I had my first engagement ring repaired. It's the ring Thom gave me when I was a junior in high school. I broke the band weight lifting probably 17 years ago and never got around to fixing it. It's one of those things that would have been really upsetting to lose. But now it's on my hand again.

While at the jewelry store I got two new pairs of earrings. :D One to replace the stolen ones and the other set...'cause I liked 'em.

We have three major household projects to do as a result of the burglaries. We made really good progress on one this weekend. Absolutely no riding...Maybe next weekend.

The weekend after next I have my first brevet. I've hardly ridden since we got back from Hawaii. But I did a hard 200K there, so the one here shouldn't be too bad. I just hope it warms up some.

Life goes on. Thanks for all the kind thoughts. :)
