My parents' house in Albany NY had this little part of the roof over the side porch where huge amounts of snow would gather and periodically slide off. We used to call it "the avalanche". Over time during the winter, it would get really high and turn into a big ice mountain. You took your life in your hands going under that thing.
I also remember an incredible ice storm in Albany when I was about ten years old. I had to walk out to the drugstore to get something essential and the ice-encased limbs were cracking and falling all around. It was really beautiful and really scary. I've never seen anything like it since, even though I lived in the NE or Midwest till '83.
I don't miss northeast winters ONE BIT. Long live the Pacific Northwest!
PS Medicinal Drambuie. Huh.
PPS I write here that I haven't had a cold in over a year. That was last night. Now I'm sneezing. Bruno, you better get over here with that damn Drambuie.
You wished yourself a cold. Yuck. I've had a little sinusy-cold thing but it's going away. I try not to succumb. I hope you don't get worse!
We get ice storms more than we get snow storms. Although, we did get about an inch of snow yesterday--very unusual for early December. It was not unusual that it melted before noon. But the weatherman was predicting "flurries".
It is a scary thing to walk around with the ice covered limbs. Our house is in grave danger from falling trees during ice storms, so we try to leave if we can.

My husband's stepmom is from Missouri and tells of the cold icky winters. Her sister will not drive so she walks to work in the snow. How very green of her, I think it is 1 mile.
A couple years ago we went to Memphis for my birthday so I could see the pandas. It was dreadfully cold (my b-day is 2/17) and there were snow fluries. The locals said it was odd weather, I think it was the ugliest birthday ever but I bundled up and saw the pandas in the snow fluries! The polar bears weren't fazed. :p I find fluries exciting, they are so exotic to us Texans.
Sometimes I wish we had seasons here but right now it is 40 in the morning and 65 in the afternoon. I went for a run in shorts and a tee last night. I got to look at Christmas lights, it was nice.
the essential items I used to go to the store for when I was a child was cigarettes! (for my parents) no kidding!
and they cost less than 25 cents a pack.
I was able to buy wine at the store for my parents too, I must be older than you? (I only did it once and was not questioned!)
oh, okay, I was clearly too little to be drinking the wine I bought. It's quite different in Italy, isn't it. :p I am 9 years older than you!
Mr Bruno flew back to Calgary this morning. I don't get to see him again till boxing day - boo hoo :(
ah Bruno, I'm sorry to hear he's gone. When will you two be permanently in the same country?
Bummer Bruno. When is Boxing Day?
