You know my snake Maizey...she's refused one mouse out of two, three feedings ago, then two of two, then one of one. I am taking her in to be "sexed" tomorrow. This is normal behaviour for a male in breeding season. It's too late to change her name if she _is_ a male. Then I'll have Milly the male pigeon and Maizey the male snake. I must subconsciously prefer female pets.
margo - thats a lot of berries. our berry season here is late. there hasn't been much rain or sunshine. poor little berries are really little! glad you got to pick some.
salsa - hope your mom gets better.
nanci - i hope you get your gender issue resolved with your snake. what kind? had a ball python for a while. i named her fido. i figured she was a girl, but who knows.
It's an easy procedure to determine sex. That would be pretty funny if she was a he. Maybe next time you could get a pet whose gender you can determine by external morphology. Hee hee ;)
Oh - and the hairy sheets - that's completely nasty! I've found hairs in the bathroom and had my room changed, but never hairs in the bed. Ewwwwwwww.
Margo - thinking about you lots... I wondered if you knew any of those reserve soldiers :(
I went to see my first criterium yesterday - very exciting! I saw the tail end of the Cat 1/2 women's division and then the Pro men's race. They had a 1 km circuit set up downtown and they raced for 55 minutes plus 2 laps. Three guys lapped the entire peleton (peloton?) 1-1/2 times so the verdict was pretty clear early on. There was one crash around a corner and I saw it just before it happened. Some road rash and cracked up bikes for two guys but no one too badly injured. One of the top women was a girl named Leah Goldstein who battled back from a terrible crash last year that left her bedridden and then in a wheelchair for 3 months. Pretty amazing story. Being a newbie cyclist, I've never heard of her but I imagine many of you have. :) She credits her determination to her seven years in the Israel army. Reminded me again of Margo...
Swimmer's Tail - anyone ever heard of that? We took our chocolate lab Gabriel out to the lake to swim and he had a great time. Next day he couldn't sit or move his tail at all. Took him into the vet and learned about swimmer's tail. Apparently Labs use their tail as a rudder and he was experiencing the same pain I get when I do a long ride. Poor guy...
Nanci - well done on your 200 km! I so want to try that someday. I did my first metric on the road bike a couple of days ago and can't imagine doubling that in one day. Is it fairly flat where you ride? Maybe I could do it if it was flatter. This trip was all hills and my legs still hurt two days later. Ah, but it's a good hurt.. :)
I am learning to enjoy white wine. Only trying the sweeter stuff - Erhenfelser, Gwurtztraminer (totally guessed on the spelling), and a sweet Reisling. Yummy to have something cooler to drink on those hot afternoons.

I had a golden retriever (Allie) that would regularly clear the coffee table of it's contents with her tail. Both of my goldens would wag their tails so hard they're buts would wiggle all over the place. My black lab/golden mix wags his in a circle when he gets excited.
LOL on the wiggling butts! My golden retriever, Angel, (what a misnomer!) knocked two wine glasses off my table the other night and broke the stems of both. Luckily we'd emptied the glasses already :) (I have a cat named Allie)

She's been part of a group that hosted Israeli refusniks on a speaking tour in the US. As a consequence of that, and of articles she writes, she's become persona-non-grata for many at her synagogue. Nanci--now I'm curious to know what Mazie turns out to be! Funny about genders, right? I can't imagine Ariel being a boy or Isaac being a girl, but when they were babies, what if someone told me they were the opposite?

our rotts both have their tails docked. I can't imagine the damage they would do with tails. Our third dog is a spare parts dog (she looks like she was made out of spare parts). When we first got her she was severely traumatized and severely malnourished (less than half of her current weight). One night, about a month after she joined our family we hear this thumping sound. We start ripping the house apart trying to find the source of the sound. It was mamie wagging her tail against the wood floors.
Margo, I cannot imagine what it is like living in your country right now. I have friends there and worry about them all the time.

I finally had the opportunity to try out the new shorts this morning! Yippee! Wow there was a lot of traffic out there today. Anyhoo - I like the shorts! They're not perfect, but they are comfy and better than what I had before :)
I have switched from Allegra to Clarinex for my skin sensitivity issues. Last night was the first night on the Clarinex - woo was I dizzy! I'm happy to say that I was not dizzy today and felt so much more alert. The Allegra was making me really zoned out.
Today - I go get my eyes checked and get new contacts :)

I know...a lull in Thread Drift!
No new babies for me on that shift. I am glad to say that I got to sleep from 11:30 to 3 AM, got paged by two patients, told one to come to the hospital, and then slept again until she got there. It makes such a difference to get > 2 hr sleep.
The shift before that--Saturday--there was a beautiful birth of a little girl whose parents are Sudanese. We were in our Alternative Birth Center, so she delivered on a queen-sized bed, with me kneeling next to her on the bed. As soon as the baby was out and crying loudly, the dad jumped up, came around the side of the bed, threw his arms around me, started kissing my cheek, and saying THANK YOU! THANK YOU! It was so sweet. To see a dad so thrilled with the birth of his daughter. I've delivered over 600 babies--I've never been hugged and kissed like that by the dad! :D I was standing there with a sterile gown and gloves on, feeling very midwestern and stiff! :rolleyes: After all the "protective gear" was off, I gave him, the mom, and their friend big hugs as well. Who knew? The Sudanese are huggers! What a blessing. Every now and then I get to be part of a birth like that. Helps me remember how much I love my job.
Lise, I have a kind of controversial question for you. If people prefer, I will delete this off of thread drift.
I assume as a midwife you get the more "alternative" parents rather than the straight and narrow types. What are the circumcision stats among your clientel? I was amazed at the difference in numbers between when I lived in Evanston and when we moved just 10 minutes north.
The rate is low, but not because they're "alternative", but rather because we have a high proportion of Hispanic patients, who generally don't circ their babies. Not the answer you expected, right?! Our practice is the second oldest CNM midwifery practice in the city (oldest is at Cook County Hospital). When the practice started, ~ 30 years ago, it was mostly privately insured couples looking for the "alternative" midwifery experience. Our practice has evolved, and the patient mix is about 60% public aid clinics, 5-10% HMO, and the rest our "private" clinic. Some of the women from the public and HMO clinics are there because they sought us out, but many just walked in the door because that's what their insurance covers. They're happy with the midwifery care (if they don't want to see midwives, we refer them to our docs' clinic), but they didn't necessarily "choose" us for our philosophy. The clinic where I see patients is largely Hispanic, with a fair number of African immigrants, and the occasional American-born of various ethnicities.Quote:

Here's the deal--last Thursday I noticed that I was having this wierd feeling in my chest, put my fingers on my pulse, and realized that the wierd feeling was my heart skipping beats. No pain, no shortness of breath, but uncomfortable, and irregular. Called the doc's office, am going in today for an EKG and whatever else she wants to do. I've laid off the training for the most part--I did run 3.5 miles Sat, and felt fine.
I'm just trying to act like a grownup instead of a rebellious kid. I want to ride my bike to the doc's, have her say, "It's all in your head" or "It's a benign arrythmia, you're fine", and then go out for a long ride. I have a tri in 11 days, and I'm not training this week. So what! If something's wrong, it's smart to wait and see, and then follow the advice of my doc. Sheesh. I am the worst patient.
Sooo...I'm going to drive to the doc's. Then I can go by the LBS, and buy a bike stand with my birthday gift certificates! I'm also going to get the Celeste water bottle cages to match my beauteous Bianchi. I thought it was silly to get matching cages when I got the bike...and I've been dreaming of them ever since! I saw a picture of a Bianchi with the celeste cages in mimitabby's RSVP pix, and made up my mind. :D If there's time after that, and I've been cleared by my doc, I'll get a ride in.

I am at the office - a rarity. I will be gone ALL next week, in Yosemite. We spend 4 days or so cmaping at Tuolomne and then a few days at the Wawona. I am looking forward to it! No biking this year (we usually bring bikes and this year we were going to do Tioga Pass) - oh well. Plenty of hiking, though.

I'm sort of interested in the circ discussion, too. One of the procedures done in my department requires catheterization. New residents are surprised when I tell them girls are easier than boys. Many boys (of all types) are not circumsized these days, and often the foreskin can't be peeled back far enough for the radiologist to see the hole, so it's a blind poking around till he gets lucky. (Then, once the tube is in, you're still not home free because upset little boys can clamp down and prevent the catheter from advancing into the bladder! Little girls can't do that.)
I didn't take Maizey in to be sexed, because she seemed upset when I put her in a pillowcase to take her in to work, where she would have had to wait all day. I'll just take her on a day off. I studied her tail/body junction last night, and I still think she's a she.
But- I have this friend who has a pair of pigeons. The female had always laid two eggs, (replaced with wooden eggs as population control) but this time around laid four. The friend was asking if she should replace all four, or only leave two wooden eggs. My other friend Julie pointed out that the pair was actually two females- who would have thought of that?? (What's that saying doctors have about looking for horses when they hear hoofbeats, not zebras??)
We ate the poleno or whatever it was last night. Ok, but either I won't make it again or will try with different chili powder.

I tried taking pics of Maizey and a measuring tape last night so I could try out the snake measuring software. So I'm trying to get her to hold still, and not overlap herself, kind of herding her into position with my bare foot, and BF starts screaming at me to stop kicking the snake, (AS IF!!!) and when I finally was done, she rewarded me by taking a crap right in the middle of the living room carpet...And no, it doesn't pick up nicely with a spoon like bird poo...
I rode the motorcycle in a skirt last night- unplanned errand running after work. It stayed down.

OK: Here's what we know. The EKG showed that my heart is skipping beats. Doh! I knew that! :p It's premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), and most likely benign. She drew some blood (CBC for anemia, electrolytes, thyroid panel), and ordered an Echocardiogram. The soonest I can get that done is next Tuesday.
My doc speculates this is a peri-menopause thing, with hormonal shifts. It's funny; I feel considerably younger and stronger than I did at 40. I've suppressed my periods with the Nuva ring for 3 years, as treatment for the endometriosis. So I don't even think much about my hormones these days! I do get hot flashes sometimes--just annoying. So now PVCs? It's uncomfortable, but not dangerous. Unless the blood work and echo show otherwise.
Upshot: I can train and race. YEA! I should cut back on caffeine. OK, if I have to. :rolleyes: If it will ease this uncomfortable feeling when my heart skips beats, then OK. Less coffee and diet Coke it is.
To celebrate the fact that I will appearantly live to fight another day, I went to the LBS and bought the Celeste bottle cages, some new gloves, and ordered a Terry Zero X to try out. That should be in Thurs, so I'll get in some riding before the tri, and see if I like it.

MP--why is it you can hike and run, but not bike? Is it the falling factor? I'm such a clutz on my own two feet that I fall more when running than biking (so far, knock wood). I guess a fall off the bike could be much more catastrophic in terms of bleeding. Your vacation sounds great.

I'm thinking of going up to cheer for IM Wisconsin in Madison, 9/10. It's about a 3 hr drive. I was thinking of vounteering, but they want you there for orientation meetings the week before (of course), and I'm not going to make that trip twice in one week! I dated someone who lived up there for 18 months, years ago. What a pain in the butt that drive was. 'Specially cuz the relationship was largely a pain in the butt, too! :rolleyes: Interspersed, of course, with moments of joy...nothing like intermittant reinforcement, eh? :cool:

I'm also eating semi-sweet chocolate chips to celebrate my benign heart arrythmia. Hmmm...I could really get a lot of "celebrating" in, couldn't I?!? I decided ~for the moment~ against the bike stand. They're huge! I don't have that kind of room in the communal basement. For the time being, I'll turn the bike over on a tarp, to protect the seat and handle bars...oh, wait, I've got the aero bars, crud, that may not work. Hmmmm. Oh, and the bike stand is more expensive than I imagined. If I really like the Zero X, there's the outlay of money. If I don't, I'll stick with the Serfas saddle and rethink the bike stand. The gift certs covered the cages and gloves :D , and a little over half of the saddle. YAY!
Lise, glad it sounds fairly minor. I swear I was getting heart issues when I was on BC pills. Since I was constantly struggling to find one with the right balance of chemicals, I just decided to try it without. So much better! No more headaches pre-flow, no dizziness/nausea episodes, no weird heart beats, etc. I also think my nightsweats are better.
If peri-menopause is this much fun, I can't wait for the real thing.
Lise - glad to hear it wasn't anything worse and that you can still train and race! That must be a big relief.
Reducing caffeine intake is not a bad thing. Did you ever do the Daphnia experiment in biology class in college - you know - feed daphnia caffeine and watch the little things just about explode. Lovely image - sorry. That was enough to make me cut back, though. Then my peripheral vision got wiggly, then I started trying to have a baby and cut out the caffeine all together. Now if I drink a big cup of coffee (I can have small cups) - my heart feels like it's going about 100 mph. Not the best feeling.
Enjoy your new bottle holders. You must post a pic when you get them installed!
So - when do you get the other test results back? Perimenopause...that's lousy.
Wow, Lise, good news I guess on the PVC thing. I hope it is not something that will get worse. Having an echo is weird. Like an ultrasound for pregnancy - but there's no baby in there!!?? It hurt when the super stern woman was squishing my boob to get the angle right.
And you're right on doing the marathon versus cycling - it is the falling factor. A fall on the bike could be catastrophic, and I do fall on the bike. If I fall running, I will bleed more than other folks, but my chances of actually dying are not that much higher. Weighing risks. And I will mostly walk this marathon. I walked one of my three previous marathons. It's not so bad.
Brina - I just can't get over how cute your dog is. I love TE'ers with dog avatars. Your puppy looks like my Meg when she was little. Little teddy bears. I probably complimented you on it before, but it just keeps making me smile.
