white coated cats and dogs are prone to melanoma. white cats with blue eyes are prone to deafness if I recall correctly.

I am sorry to hear about Isis with her cancer. 17,18 years a good ol' age for any cat to reach. She has a wonderful life. Cherish her waning days. We all have our place and time. And remember of all the wonderful years you and Isis have had. Protect her in your heart and she will be with you in spirit.

This past year has been anything but normal. Long distance move with your babies. New place, new everything. Letting your cat go is so hard for all the selfish reasons yet we overcome and do what is the right thing. It is the right thing but still its so emotionally hard. You've given her many good years, kept her meds for thyroid condition for so many years. Kindness words can't explain. Kindness you can't boast. Kindness that only comes from the heart and Bonnie Cat was very blessed to have such wonderful mom.

Now its just you and Calypso. He has a wonderful mom, and you have a wonderful boy to help you heal your heart. Play with him. He misses Bonnie Cat too. Together, you can heal his loss too.

Thank you for all the kind and sympathetic words. Last night Isis ate more than she has in the past couple of days, then spent her evening in my lap purring. As I told DP, she is just refusing to quit. Every time I think, this is it, she has a little rebound. I know the rebounding will end soon, but I have indeed treasured all these final days with her, especially seeing her able to be content. Each day is like we have stolen one more.

Yes I totatlly understand this. I went through the same thing with Pearl a few months ago. Those last days were precious. Then it became apparent she was in increasing pain, and it was time, even though she would still purr. My heart is with you.

Thanks Lisa. What a lucky cat Pearl was to be a member of your family. And now, Suki has been provided the same opportunity to know the love, beauty and caring that Pearl had. In your photos, Suki even looks like she knows she's got it made. :)

Pearl had battled kidney failure for 5 years, and when she was increasingly sick the last time, we thought it was more of the same, and kept treating her with fluids etc. She kept eating and purring, but kept losing weight and acting uncomfortable more and more. That's when I saw the tumor in her mouth and the vet confirmed she had advanced mouth cancer- on top of her kidney problems. At that point I knew she was in pain and would continue to get worse and there was no hope for recovery. So that's when i brought her in and stayed with her...she purred!
The two cats we had die before Pearl faded away peacefully at home with us- one was 20 and the other had total kidney failure....but neither seemed to be in much pain- just fading out. But in Pearl's case, I knew the mouth cancer was painful, terminal, and getting worse each day, so I felt i needed to be strong enough to intervene on her behalf so she wouldn't suffer more.
You are using these last days to shower love on your kitty, and that's as it should be. You will know when the time has come to help her through. Sometimes I think it's more about when WE are ready rather than our fur baby. But that's ok too- you are in it together.

When my old blind kitty, Pixar, had cancer she lived about two weeks after the diagnosis. She was very similar to Isis, in some ways - she was happy and cuddly and as obnoxious as ever, but she wouldn't eat or drink enough. I started giving her wet food with added water or broth just so she could eat something until the spunk started to fade. (I also found out that when nothing else was interesting, she would still sneak up to my sub sandwiches from wawa and scarf down the turkey when she thought I wasn't looking. So funny.) She let me know when she had given up and we enjoyed another hour or so of sitting outside listening to birds before I wrapped her in her favorite blanket and we went to the vet.

I hope you can enjoy the time you have left - Isis is lucky to have you as a mom.

What beautiful photos! The one of Saki is stunning, what a regal cat and lovely colours.

Our Lyra is either pretty banged up or a honking huge hypochondriac... came in last evening looking in pain, and screamed, hissed and bit if we as much as touched her hind quarters :( I checked out that all four limbs were working normally, I couldn't feel any swelling in the abdomen and she didn't seem to be going into shock, and the only injury I could find was a smallish bite? at the root of her tail. Worrisome night checking up on her. Today she's eating well, lolling on a wool blanket in front of "her" heater and being spoilt rotten... :rolleyes:
Maybe her catfight injuries are like "man colds".

This is Lloyd in his Radio Flyer. We use it for fun as well as real transport since we don't have a car. He is barking to communicate that he wants to go right now; no time for photos.

He has a small tumor on his eyelid, so we are going to the vet tomorrow and hoping surgery isn't needed. The vet's office is not very big. I wonder if they will charge extra for parking our wagon?

I love Lloyd! Had an English bull when I was a kid and I soooo want one again. I loved that dog!

She may have also been "raped" during before or after the cat fight. It isn't always about territories and since male cats have a spikey erectile organ, unless the female is willing it can be a prolonged and painful process. It isn't always females that get it either. In tact males will do it to neutered males as well.

Been through it at least once with my own cats.

Thanks, yes, hamsters are difficult to capture in photos....but she lives up to her name, she's sweet as honey. Soft and loves her nightly trip to the kitchen to get broccoli, raisins or almonds!

Saki is the household celebrity. He's a Tonkinese. After adopting strays my whole life he was a "treat" for myself (who, as a little girl wanted a siamese, a horse, a canary, collies, shepherds the list goes on). Piper and Saki are life long "dreams come true."

Spayed female cats don't get 'raped' or mated with -I thought. :confused:

no they can't be impregnated, but a mean tom can attempt repeatedly to mount them with involves bites on ears, back and back of neck and anal damage.

Yeah, we do have an elderly cranky tom next door, one I mostly feel sorry for because he just ghosts around here and talks to no-one while our Ms. Diva invaded the place. I was a bit worried she was fighting with the tom kitten up the street, she could do him some serious harm, but apparently he has enough sense to just spit and run away.

Lyra still seems a bit sore but is back to sprawling around like a bored movie-star :D

Lloyd went to the vet today and she said we can "wait and see" what happens with the growth on his eyelid. Might need surgery, but maybe not. I'm trying to be optimistic.

We traveled by Radio Flyer to the vet and made many new friends. We passed through what supposedly is busiest pedestrian intersection in Manhattan (twice as many peds as Times Square) and Lloyd-in-the-wagon drew a big crowd.

If I'd thought about it I would have gone another way, but he has an equable temperament and seemed to like the admiring throng. Helped him forget the blood draw, maybe!

Now THAT I would have loved to see (radio flyer). Way cute.

Logan, aka Mr. Drool, the day I brought him home

A day before New Year's Day I picked up a foster boy named Logan from the rescue that Colin came from. I had wanted to foster since losing our little boy to cancer on 1 December and we brought Logan on board with the intention of giving him a quiet home--temporarily. ;) Logan had been shuffled around several foster homes during a time when several dogs were coming in from puppy mills and abandonment from the housing crisis and I offered to bring him on board. He suffers from dermatocyotosis, aka sheltie skin disease, which is an auto-immune disorder. He had a flare up but with medication and a soft bed in a quiet home, he soon recovered. Logan is quite shy but is slowly coming around and did beautifully when I came home from the hospital after my surgery. He stayed as close to me as he could and would check on my boo-boo daily to make sure I was healing. :) His favorite friend is Kali and he often snuggles in beside her at bedtime.

Logan is so handsome. This is the kind of failure I love to hear about.

I fostered a pup last year and I named him Bubba. When he was adopted they changed his name to something I can't pronounce (Kyuus??)

I'm hoping that one day my fostering will fail, but I haven't fostered in almost a year now.

Both are rescues, and I love them very much.

We adopted a second dog from a rescue and have named him Oscar since his face looks like Oscar the Grouch (he's the one on the left). He is a Shih Tzu/Lhasa mix and has made himself quite at home. His owners gave him up because of their long work schedules. He was being left in the crate for up to 12 hours at a time. Yuki (the maltese) is the old man of the house and doesn't really know what to think about this.

Here's our Henry. He's 3 years old, portuguese water dog (we got this breed b/c of our allergies - he doesn't shed and we aren't allergic to him even though we are allergic to our neighbor's lab)

Henry is very very cute. Looking very inquisitive.

Here is a pic at the beach (which they love). One in front is a Belgian malinois named Taz. Lexy is the one in the water. Both dogs are rescues. Both are very spoiled.
