Feds approve $2.7 million for C&O Canal project
January 4, 2010 - 5:13pm
LANDER, Md. (AP) - Sen. Benjamin Cardin is announcing a $2.7 million appropriation to begin restoration of the Catoctin (kah-TAHK'-tin) Aqueduct in the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park.
Cardin said Monday that the funds will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The three-arch structure near Lander was built in the 1830s to carry the canal over the mouth of Catoctin Creek at the Potomac River. It partially collapsed during a 1973 flood.
Cardin says the project will help stimulate tourism and development in southern Frederick County.
