The extra nice thing about Isaac eating grass is that he will then very kindly come back in when it's time to puke it back up. At least, that's what OUR cats always do.

What happened to your AC, Fish? Ours caused trouble a few times a year by freezing up- which then means no AC, but then after a good long thaw, it's fine again until it has to run non-stop for a long time. Finally, this year, I was sick of it, so we had a tune-up/checkup done, and it just needed more refrigerant (plus some minor changes in the house like leaving ceiling fans on all the time and uncovering all vents and I put in a programmable thermostat, which I don't know if that has any effect or not but we're not fighting over the settings anymore, especially since BF has a real job now and is paying the electric bill so I am not always trying to conserve- now he is!!!). Hasn't frozen up since. I hope yours is something simple like that.
i use to work for an ac company back in phoenix. i know how it goes when your ac stops. not fun.
poor fish. hopefully you get it figured out and someone can get there quick to fix it. good luck on that one.
We're not quite sure what happened to the AC. We had the refrigerant recharged last year. It's been running hard lately - 'cause of the heat. We have a really cool (bad pun - sorry - you know I can't help it) thermostat that came with the house. It learns what temps you want at what particular time and gradually changes the temp. Anyhoo - Mr. Fish was checking what type of batteries it took (batteries were running low) and removed the unit while it was running. We are afraid that caused some sort of voltage spike and fried something on the board. We had a wire that needed to be resoldered before, so who knows.
Just talked to Mr. Fish - AC guy is still not there. It's wierd - it'll blow out air that's around 80F. The house is around 85F or so now. It's dehumidifying the air, but we're afraid to run it like that, just in case it's doing more damage. It has to be hot in that house!
Here's another quirky southern thing that doesn't happen up north. You have a well, and a pump. One afternoon, your water just quits. Then, at night, it may mysteriously start up again! Hmmm- ants are in the electrical contacts that control the pump! They go to bed at night, and your water starts working again, unless there are some bodies stuck in the contacts. No one knows why they are attracted to the contacts. You have to learn how to shut off the electricity to the pump (which at my house isn't the main breaker in the house youch!!!!!!!!!) and how to dismantle it and get to the contacts, then figure out what exactly constitutes "contacts," then clean them with a nail file, then go psycho spraying killer insecticide all over above your ground water supply so it doesn't happen again after the 5000th time...
Lise - poo on Mr. P. At least you had fun with your friends! Aargh!
There no other way to put it...that just sucks!Quote:

Got the bike all cleaned up. It was just so sad, having not been ridden since it stopped raining. Looking ready for action now!
Mr. Fish just called - AC is back on! It was the refrigerant. We were apparently nearly out. He sounds miserable. It's only 91F right now, but the HI is 100!
I'm headed home!
MP - enjoy riding the trainer. And I don't know about the chain whip...
Glad the A/C will be on the mend, Fish!
Nanci that is the strangest thing I have heard of about the ants... just wild. We were on a well when I was growing up, but didn't have that problem that I was aware of. We didn't have a lot of ants though.
Lise - sorry about Mr. P flakiness. Whoever is the true Mr. P for you is going to have to be one miraculously wonderful person.
fish - glad that the ac is back. life will be a bit more pleasent tonight.
i'm fighting with myself on if i should get todays steepandcheap item. its a nice jacket, and could use it, but the problem is that its wind-resistant. i need wind proof with all the wind out here, but i could use another jacket. i only have one.....
Chick- That jacket, while a good deal, is still expensive if not perfectly what you want. BTW, the Mountain Hardwear windproof jacket is excellent. Try to find one of those on clearance like at Sierra Trading Post or Back Country or even Steep and Cheap. North Face makes an excellent windproof jacket, too.
Fish- glad to hear the AC is working!
MP- the ants thing is apparently well-known in Florida. As soon as I mentioned what happened, _everyone_ knew what it was and what to do. There are bad ants down here. Up north we just had the huge black carpenter ants, regular brown ants, and rarely, biting red ants. Down here there are burning biting fireants that can actually kill people! Then the plain old brown ants bite and sting. Sugar ants- micro ants that get in the house. Oh, fireants also get in the house. Some weird black and red medium-sized ants that seem to be solitary and don't hurt anything. Giant red velvet ants- (like red velvet cake???) that are solitary, don't hurt anything, and are really cool. Oh, they are actually wasps, but look like ants and I don't think they have wings...If I could make one creature vanish- it owuld be ants.
I just bought another pair of Crocs because I love the first set so much. I can't believe I love them more than the Birks I've worn for 20 years, but I do...The new ones are fuschia. The first ones were lime green. My friend Teresa is going to borrow them for the day tomorrow to see if she likes them.
thanks nanci i'll keep my eye out for those other ones. you just help me set my mind.
reading your thing of ants makes me really happy that there isn't any here. don't get carried away by any of them! have you seen the movie ant bulley? not sure if its out yet, but that was the other thing that made me think of.
I just read about Ant Bully yesterday. My first thought was -good- the kid gets in trouble for killing animals, but now today, here I am, wanting to erradicate the earth of ants. But not for torture purposes- I just don't like getting bit and having to worry about them killing one of my pets.
What I'm dying to go see is "A Scanner Darkly."
This is weird- we got new radiology residents today, right? So one of them grows tobacco for a living, too, apparently on a large scale. That's kind of weird- a doctor who reads films to look for lung disease, (not to mention does studies on pts that have had laryngectomies, due to cancer) growing the product that causes it. It's like job security. It disturbs me!
Wow. Ant-o-rama. That's one thing about those really warm climes. Sooo much fauna. Ants give me the creeps. I lived in Jamaica for 2 months a few years ago, and ants are everywhere. One crumb left on a countertop attracts the whole colony, it seems. Well sealed Tupperware is essential. Something I'm sure most Jamaicans don't have much of! Only entitled Americans who can't stand ants in their breakfast cereal, again.
It's 98 with a heat index of 108 up here. I got about 3 hr sleep in my relatively cool bedroom, came out, and the living and dining rooms were way too warm. The poor little hand me down window unit in the DR is struggling mightily. I realized that the curtain I hung between the DR and kitchen had some open space at the top, through which hot air was pouring. So I fixed that with a towel, and remembered to turn on the ceiling fans in the BR and DR. Feeling better now. Wanted to cool off with a bath, but the bathroom's in the "hot wing" of the apartment! These old brick buildings get like ovens in this heat.
I have a feeling my friend and I are going to *walk* more than we run tonight at 8. At least the sun will be setting. We have a plan for Jamba Juice afterwards! :D
Now that is interesting. I wonder how he resolves that for himself. Curious.Quote:

i see many of you have pets. well i have two puppies and one i have a slight problem with.
she's a mastiff/rottie/great dane/ridgeback (aka BIG DOG) mix. i keep trimming her nails as far as i can but they are black and don't want to trim them to far. had a bad experience once with that. so now she has broken two nails half way down so the soft part of the inside is exposed. the first one is healed just fine, but now the second one is still half way hanging on. its going to break off any second i'm sure.
any clue to why this keeps happening? are they dry? anything i can do about them? she has really thick nails to begin with and they are longer, but i keep them as short as i feel comfortable cutting. thought about getting one of those drills, but not sure. she's good about trimming nails and stuff like that. she just lays down and looks at you like 'are you done yet?'
any ideas?
I think I've seen these. There was a ginormous ant walking around the gas pump one day. It was HUGE - over 1cm. It was very red. It looked like it could do some damage. I figured that it came in on a farmer's truck.Quote:

And if they get you (for those of you that haven't had the pleasure), they crawl up your leg and then all gazillion of them bite at once. It's no fun.
So Nanci - were fireants in your well or something else?
Lise - I promise you - he's out there somewhere! Now all we have to do is figure out how to find him :)
You could take her to the vet and have them give her a good trim to get the nails back to where they should be. Then you will know how far to clip them in the future. I had a golden retriever once (miss her greatly) whose nails went straight out. They were black - looked like they had been painted. I was always battling to keep them trimmed.Quote:

I just talked to one of my guy friends who went on his first internet date last night. He's all discouraged...I'm like, WEENIE! One date and you want to quit? No way! Keep going! ;) Really, though, talking to him about don't take it personally, it's not about you helped me feel better.
CWR, sorry about the dog/nail dilemma. Are there any large animal vets up there? Like...horses, polar bears...kidding about the polar bears, but serious otherwise. Bless your pup for being so cooperative. My ex and I had a SharPei (solid muscle), who fought with every ounce of her being when we tried to clip her nails. The cats have gotten more cooperative with old age.
fish - no one that i know of most just let their dogs run around free and nope no groomer.
lise - the closest vet is in town (anchorage, a 2.5 hr flight away) dog or other. though i wouldn't want to attempt to trim a bear's nails. though some of them need them done, don't want to get that close to one! sorry that your friend is having a hard time with the internet dating thing. its hard to find a date no matter what. phew! glad i'm not in that boat anymore.
This made me think of ukeliphant's avatar, where she's got her cat in a carrier, strapped to her back, and she's getting on her bike! Hmmm...one of those BOB trailers that Veronica uses...a lot of dog treats...a 2.5 hour flight across the Alaskan bush, that translates to, what, a two week bike trek? Oh, the things we do for the beasts we love. :pQuote:

Hang with me, we'll get to the funny part--
In 1995, Chicago had a horrific 5 day heat wave, in which 739 people died. Since then, we've got a lot of safety measures in place for "heat emergencies".
Yesterday a police officer knocked on my friend's door. He told her they were checking on the old lady on the first floor. She wasn't answering her phone, and didn't come to the door. My friend replied, "Of course not! She's dead!" What she meant was, "She died two years ago, and her nephew just won't rent out the apartment." She said the officer clearly thought she meant, "Oh, heck, she succumbed yesterday!"
I do find it comforting to know that they really are going door to door to check on old people.
I used a dremel tool nail trimmer on all my dogs- it's great. You can get them _so_ short. (Cut that broken one off before she rips it off and causes worse trouble!!) Ok, so get a jar of Qwik Stop powder for when you go too short, then get the dremel tool, and take them down till you can barely see the quick- you should be able to stop before you actually hit it, but if you do, no real damage done, and you can stop the bleeding with the Qwik Stop. You want to be trimming about once a week, but with the tool, it goes fast! Ideally, the nails won't even come _close_ to touching the floor. (I did my dogs twice a week.) Round off the edges. That size dog, you should be able to get the nails down to 1/4" easily. In gradual steps. The quick of the nail will recede the shorter you go.
Seriously - there's a dremel nail trimmer???? Like a metal nail trimmer? Uhhhh, I'm thinking my dogs would run the other way - real fast! That's just scary.
I'd have loved to see the look on the PO's face! Whaaaa? She died?Quote:

Man those things hurt! I get a reaction to them, but BF swells up in huge pustules where they bite him! Ow!!! Little bastards. I wonder if that word will get bleeped.
Chick - I have no helpful information on the dog nail thing (and I think Nanci's already helped) but I have to weigh in on this - OMG what an AMAZING dog combo!!!! That sounds like my DREAM dog!! I had a rottie for 10 years (my soulmate) and always wanted a mastiff.
Have you got a picture???
I get the more typical reaction - little zit-like things. I wonder if the Allegra would stop that reaction like the mosquito bites? I have managed to avoid fireants for quite a while. Of course - I'll probably get nailed by them tomorrow!Quote:

MP-- I had a funny moment there, when you addressed a post to "Chick" (ChickWhoRips, of course). My Mom's nickname for me is "Chickadee", and she still calls me "Chick" sometimes! I thought, "hwangh?" (phonetic rendering)
Nanci, I keep meaning to tell you that I've worn nothing but the Shimano sandals since the weather warmed up around here! I have an oval tan patch on the tops of my feet! :p I love them. My toes go just as numb--no more, no less--as they do with any other shoes, so no big deal. They are not always the easiest to get clipped in with, but they clip out with no problem. Thanks again for helping me find them. :D
fish--the baby's registering for school? Wow. A big day for you all.
My 45 minutes of running with my buddy from school turned into 2 hours of some running, a lot of walking, a lot of talking. Good to get caught up. I'm going to shower and go to bed. I'd love to do a long ride tomorrow before it gets blazingly hot again. 90 degrees here at 10:34 pm.
:o I ended up dragging Bleu the Bike to the LBS. I could not get the rear wheel to spin! I printed up stuff from the Park website, I cozied up to Sheldon Brown. Totally clueless, my new middle name. :o
Walk into the shop, tell the guy what's going on. Four minutes later, my wheel is spinning away. :) The good news is, I now understand how to adjust the cable, and how to adjust the spring tensioner screws. I need visual aids to learn!
I almost forgot - was it in this thread that Jesus Christ Superstar was being discussed? I'm going to go see it next week - City Lights is putting it on. It's getting good reviews, I'm very excited. I've only seen the movie version.
Yep, it was here. (Where else but TD?) I listened to the soundtrack this weekend, and had the songs playing in my head. Have a great time--it's definitely my favorite of the ALW "rock operas". The movie is burned in my memory. I saw it on stage with Carl Anderson as Judas. Ted Neely did not perform that night, at the last minute. His understudy was very good, but he was not...Ted Neely as Jesus in JCS. I kind of felt like Carl Anderson was sneaking around and seeing someone else behind Ted's back by singing with the understudy that way! :pQuote:

We're not going to the billy joel concert-(is it just me or am i getting older)-ticket prices are wayyyyyy too expensive...! It's $120AUD for a good ticket...
(it's not sold out yet though...so we may still think about it.)
I did it again this morning-set my alarm but forgot to turn it on. I was lying in bed worrying about the time & when i looked at my clock it was 6:20am...I was supposed to have woke up at 445am to go for a ride...(i start work at 730..)
Hey MP/snap...did you track down any Tim Tams....(I've started something-let the bikkie takeover commence)
good night kids...have a good day
