My cats will snuggle up to the fireplace, but not the dog. He avoids it for some reason that I will never understand....
How funny, Lisa! Our kitten does the same thing, with the exact same type of balls. She loves them, and goes up and down the stairs with me just lke Sheba. I especially love it when she carries the ball in her mouth.Quote:

I had a Maine Coon that had that same sense of dignity. If he did something that we laughed at he would show us his back end and stalk off to somewhere we couldn't find him. Of course, that made us laugh even more.

Poor Suki (aka Pookie)....she had a rough day!
She was an abuse rescue kitty from the shelter and when we adopted her 1 1/2 yrs ago she was only about 3 yet had very poor teeth due to her earlier infections and malnutrition taking its toll...she would always have poor teeth, but otherwise now healthy.
Her last checkup revealed some bad dental/gum issues, so today she went in for a major plaque cleaning and two of her teeth had to come out as well. A canine and a molar. :( They also told me she was already missing severl tiny front teeth and another back tooth. But this extraction should help her overall mouth health and the plaque removal is good too. They had to knock her out to do all this of course- valium followed by gas!
Now she's back home, and seems ok- she ate a big bowl of soupy food and is resting happily, still on pain killers. She's snoozing on her fave pillow now...tiny drops of blood on her chin. :eek:
I have more pain killers to give her over the next three days, plus she's on antibiotics now for 14 days to clear up the mouth while she's healing.
Sheba has strict orders not to bother Sukie for the next two days....but will she behave? (NOT)
Poor little thing! But I'm hopeful she will soon feel much better than before she had the teeth out. My baby! :o (this photo was from a year ago)

And Sukie, noticed her clipped ear. Was she part of catch, spay and release program then decided she was suited as a pet?
I've had full grown rescue cats who made my house as their last forever home. And yes many of them do have really poor dental health. Sukie is no different. She is doing fairly well from sound of things though... Some of my adult rescue toms lost almost all of their teeth. no teeth in the front between the canine, only one or two molars left... But surprisingly they do quite well with dry food.
For those with older cats and bad teeth, tell-tale sign that their gum is hurting is when they prefer dry food over wet food. Wet food gets stuck in cavity and its very painful. The cats will mouth the dry food and swallow whole. If your cat is doing this, then its a sure sign that the kitty needs dental work immediately.
I only have one Tom who came to me more or less fully grown right now. He was just under a year old when he came home with me. I love him to pieces. :D He also keeps order in our pride of 10 cats.
No, her missing ear half was not due to a catch/spay/release. When she was rescued/removed from her home by the humane society cruelty squad, she was one of about 30 cats and dogs living in terrible conditions in a trailer with a lady who had mental illness. Thus the malnutrition and multiple infections. But Suki also had had her ear bitten (dog?) and the top half was just sort of hanging there by its perforations and they could not reattach it so they removed it and sutured it up neatly. She was about 3 at the time. Now her half-ear just makes her even more endearing to us.Quote:

Suki is so sweet! I love looking at the wonderful photos, even though they make me really WANT to test my cat allergies yet again.... (no, I won't, not as long as I have to live with carpet)
The great thing about the photos is their personalities just shine through and it is so easy to tell how loved they are!
We've been battling Bonnie Cat's hyperthyroid disease for 5 years... but yesterday evening her vet & I agreed that it was time to call it over. Now Bonnie was always very vocal, with a running commenary on everything. Silence was when she was asleep. I always figured she'd get in the last word, and she did. She had words for the vet tech holding her, and just to reinforce the message, she swatted her with her paw.
So now she's free of not feeling good being mixed with almost constant hunger. Maybe it sounds crass, but part of me is relieved that it's over. The healthy Bonnie has been gone (including her mind) for a while. Sigh.
Now it's just Calypso and me.
Beth, so sorry you had to let go of another kitty. It must have been so hard to decide when to let go of Bonnie.
I'm sorry to read this, Beth. Having just gone through this, I understand the conflicting emotions. You did right for her, first and foremost. ((Hugs.))

I'm glad that it was obvious about it being Bonnie's time. I think it's always harder when the decision and turning point is not as clear. I too was relieved in terms of making 'the decision' a few months ago when our Pearl was found to have not just kidney problems but advanced cancer as well- treatments and cures were just no longer in the picture and that made my decision to end it much easier, knowing she would only feel worse and worse and have more pain as she approached the end.
Wishing you and Calypso a loving recovery time during your loss.
Thanks everyone. Calypso engages me in play, especially since Bonnie isn't around to pick on. Got my ankles as I left the bathroom ;). I swear she laughs. Mad game of chase insued.
I look forward to the day when I take a new fur baby to Dr.C and ask the ever important question: "He/she followed me home, can I keep him/her?"
Dr.C. has been a wonderful vet, especially since I arrived in town with 2 geriatric and fragile cats. Nothing quite like getting to know a new client because their fur babies are terminally/chronically ill. OTOH, scheduling Calypso's annual check-up next month will be pleasant. Just a well-patient check, annual shots, see how she's doing on her weight loss (she finished off Herald and Bonnie's special food fairly often, bad on the waist line).
We're doing OK
It's been awhile since I've perused the discussion forums (it's been awhile since I've been active, I guess). I am back in the (bike) saddle and also training for a walk half marathon at the end of April, so I have returned to where I find my best motivation...all you gals. As I previously posted, I just had Suki's teeth cleaned at the vet and they had to remove two very badly eroded teeth- a canine and a molar- poor Suki! but the vet and I agreed she must have been in pain from them. I hadn't realized! And indeed, right after the anesthesia wore off, that very night she started playing like a kitten and purring wildly and showing affection like mad- she was really happy!
She acts like a brand new kitty now, and the lesson here is- be sure to have your pet's teeth checked out!
Here is Suki recuperating from her teeth extractions the following day, but feeling grateful and relieved to have those painful teeth gone...

Suki is such a sweatheart! I usually have them check the teeth annually. When I got my new kitty, he has as of yet, an unexplainable habit of sticking his tongue out. I asked the vet if they thought he had mouth issues, like over-bite or something like that, but they said no. Still don't know why he sticks his tongue out sometimes. It sure is funny looking though!

It never occurred to me that cats could get mouth cancer like this (thought it was just humans who smoke or chew :confused:) but looking into our cats' mouths is something we will try to do - if they don't bite us that is - going forward. I also learned that this form of cancer is most common in white-coated cats, especially those who sun themselves (what cat doesn't?) and they tend to get it on their ears, mouth or nose. Our other cat is white. :( Apparently, it is suggested that you put sun screen on a white cat's pink areas before letting them out or even laying in the sun by the door. Hopefully, she'll get used to it. I will try to post photos tonight or tomorrow night of our precious Isis and Athena cats.
Beth, I am very sorry to hear about Bonnie Cat.
:( I'm sorry about Isis. I'm sure if she could talk she will be grateful for being there when she needs you most.
