These aren't my dogs, but here are some photos I took. I'm trying to get good enough to sell them (people like to pay for good action shots of their performance dogs).

We recently adopted this little senior citizen sheltie boy who is a special needs dog. He had been sitting in a shelter for a month when a Good Samaritan saw him and promptly moved him into a rescue. :) He was terribly underweight (14 lbs!) had a bad tooth :( and was very stressed. Hubby saw him on Petfinder and fell in love with him. His hearing is almost gone and he has vision loss in one eye but to us that makes him even more special. He just had a cancerous tumor removed and is doing very well. From the very start he fit right in with Niki and Kali and it was as though he had always been a part of our family. We love him even more with each passing day.

I just want to hug him, he's beautiful.

Way to go Sundial. I volunteer at an animal sanctuary in town that houses primarily older, discarded dogs, and helps educate people how to take care of (and not throw away) their dogs when they get older and develop "needs," as they are usually considered "unadoptable" and instantly put down if/when they end up at the pound or shelter....but often still have plenty of years of life and love in them, and can teach us a lot.

Seniors are the BEST! They fit like your favorite pair of jeans and they often are mellower, easy going, and just plain relieved to be in a good home. I don't have to worry about the potty/chewy/rambunctious stage like I would with a puppy and with his hearing loss he doesn't get upset during the thunderstorms. :)

So wonderful to hear a happy senior dog story. They are the best! He's beautiful.

Maybe I ought to take a camera with me....

This morning when I was cleaning litterboxes, Calypso the cat was doing the ususal morning crazies, but then I notice that she was actually chasing something.
In the water dish was a gecko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_house_gecko) staring back at me. :eek: Took the whole thing outside telling it I would keep it safe from big furry monsters, and poured the contents out. Not quite sure how little gecko got in, as Calypso does have a habit of bringing in her interactive toys and then loosing them. At least this one was released alive.

Good thing I'm not squeamish. I save lizards almost every other day from her. Heeere lizard lizard lizard.... :p:D

Well I learned something today. I didn't know there were gheko's in the United States.

Her name is now Lyra, btw, after the young, brave and friendly heroine of the Golden Compass books.

Oh, and we've reopened the cat flap our last cat used. She took to it immediately, with great joy. In, and out. In. And out! And in! Cat flaps rule :D

Lyra's a beauty! I love it when cats sleep with their legs hanging over the edge, like they have no cares in the world. She's obviously very happy.

Well first I noticed another dollar on the floor. I thought "There was another bill with that one" and immediately went for the water bowl. That's where everything ends up. She actually rifled through a bag I had on the floor and pulled them out of a pocket. Devil Cat strikes again....

NoNo, when i was a little girl we had a cat that made tea. We kept finding tea bags in the cat water dish, and the water turned to tea. My mother kept telling me to stop doing that, but I kept saying it wasn't me! One day i saw my cat go into the brown par garbage bag in the kitchen, fish out a used tea bag, and carry it over to her water dish and drop it in. I told my mother but she just couldn't believe me. Finally one day the cat did it again but my mother saw it. The cat never put anything except tea bags in the water dish.
Amazing.

I wonder what Ruthie thinks she is going to accomplish with the 'money tea'. Maybe she's hoping it will 'expand' into $100? lol!

That's so funny! Although I'm sure you didn't think it was too funny when you were getting blamed for it:p

Anything new goes straight to the water bowl. Certain things end up in there repeatedly. It's very frustrating. And then there are the days she knocks the bowl around, spilling water everywhere. I looked up drowning toys and one theory is that their feeding area is "their" domain, a special place, and so they take things to their safe place. Or that they enjoy the smell or texture of a wet object. My only conclusion is that cats are insane.

Raccoons wash everything. Maybe your cat does too.

Nono, what do you expect from a Calico? When I was in college, I had a gorgeous calico named Clare. Her personality was as beautiful as her appearance.

Ah, the joys of having a bloodthirsty predator in the house again. Friday evening I watched Lyra hunt her first mouse, a tiny little shrew. She sat avidly watching the one end of the hedgerow in our back garden, while I could see a tiny grey shadow sneaking down on tiny little feet down towards the other end, until wham! she saw it too and came flying down. Lots of hysterical squeaking. She was in no hurry to kill the poor thing, though, so the shrew got to run hysterically up and down quite a few times... Thankfully she did get to the point after a while, and brought the shrew out, almost dead. I couldn't stand it any more then and thunked a rock on its head. She then grabbed the little corpse and brought it proudly inside, through the entire house and down the stairs, to play with it inside our closet, promptly "losing" it under the low bottom shelf. "Oops, looky, mom, I can't get hold of it!" Yay. Cat and mouse out the front door. In again through the cat flap in back 2 minutes later, this time to play on the living room carpet. New tactic - lots of praise, a reward of goats cheese, mouse spirited away meanwhile and thrown under the hedgerow in front. (I wasn't entirely certain it was dead, so I wanted to give it a sporting chance just in case.)

Next morning - she's been round the entire row of houses, sniffed her way through the hedges and found the bedraggled little corpse again. More praise, more goats cheese, mouse in the garbage this time.

So Sunday we come home to a RAT on the carpet. I can't wait to see what Shere Khan here comes home with next week... But I'll sure be checking under the bed and the low bottom shelf regularly from now on.

A RAT?!:eek: That makes me so glad Ruthie's an indoor cat. I couldn't deal with finding dead things around the house. She's not even that great about killing insects. Pretty much useless as a hunter, unless it's my legs or some object I'm trying to use.:rolleyes:

years ago I took a still alive bird from my cat as he dragged it into the house and down the stairs. At the time we were living in a European row house, it was summer so most of the doors to the second floor balconies on the back and the attic balconies in the front were open because of the heat. The next day the cat came in proudly dragging a leather mule style slipper with a rabbit fur ball on its' toe. I took that away from him and he went off in a huff. For the next couple of weeks, he would show up with random items, mostly soft and or furry. Socks, scarves, the slipper repeatedly, stuffed toys, balls of knitting yarn, soft towels etc. It got to the point wher I would collect everything into a basket and go from neighbor to neighbor, allowing them to reclaim their "borrowed" items. Several times it became apparent that he was going further afield than just our row of 6 houses because about half of the items were unclaimed!

Finally we got a cold spell and the balcony and attic doors were closed so his crime wave ended. Fortunately my neighbors were very understanding. The teenage daughter who owned the slippers even offered to buy him his own pair, but I managed to convince her that if she would just lock up her slippers that would help.

Several years later when we were getting ready to move, I found another whole pile of uncliamed stuff under a cupboard.

Several of my former neighbors continued to inquire after the"kleptomaniac" cat until he died.

I love the tales of the bloodthirsty predator and the klepto cat. Years ago, I woke up in bed with a garter snake courtesy of my cat. I, too, have euthanized rodents that the cat only wounded.

That is hilarious, marni :D Lyra hasn't stolen anything, but she has apparently visited almost every neighbour already, going blithely inside, including the one who is violently allergic :o

Back when I lived in the mountains of Arizona, Bonnie Cat caught a Ruphus Hummingbird, and comes trotting inside with said birdie in her mouth, meowing proudly through it. I took the tiny bird from her, and amazingly it was alive and apparently unharmed. So I took it next door to my neighbors, who had hummingbird feeders, to try to get it to drink. Also blew warm air onto it while gently holding it. After a few minutes I could feel rustling, a bit more drinking, and more vigerous rustling, I opened my hands, and the little bird burst out, chittering away. If a bird could cuss it did. And the rest of the summer, when Bonnie was outside, she was dive-bombed by a Ruphus hummer (they're known to be fearless and quite territorial)!


And if you're wondering how she was able to catch the little bird in the first place..
Up in the mountains, when we'd get thunderstorms, the temperature would drop 15 or more degrees in less than 1/2 an hour. The sudden drop would put hummers in torpor, slowing them down, or even making them fall. Often they'll perch in a tree or shrub and wait it out, letting their bodies catch up.
