Hmm, yes - was taking poetic licence! The flight is something like 30 hours all told, with transfers and things. Good news is that if I fly via LA, rather than Singapore, my luggage allowance increases from 20kg to 64kg!! Something to do with all flights to America have an agreed massive allowance! Means that I can take my bike on the plane as a piece of luggage, yay!!

On taking your bike "as luggage"... bikes aren't considered luggage by many of the airlines, they are "special cargo". I had to pay $80 extra to fly my bike with me to CA recently... and then the airlines scratched it in a couple places while inspecting it for explosives. It would have cost me another $80 to fly the bike home AND chance more scratches, but I chose to ship it UPS. Much cheaper.
Go to the site for the airlines you're using and check for bike regulations for international travel. I'd also suggest (unless you already have one) the purchase of a hard bike case rather than using one of those cardboard boxes.
I have a Trico Iron Case, and other than the TSA agents mis-hap, my bike arrived with no extra bends in her parts. She's in her case and on a UPS truck as we speak. You might even consider using UPS for your bike...
Spazz, did you compare FedEx to UPS? The latest Bicycling reported that FedEx was about 2/3s the cost but I haven't done any research myself to confirm this.
Would you mind telling us what you paid including insurance? I'll be shipping to SLC in May and trying to decide if I want to borrow a friend's hardcase or recycle a bike box from the LBS.
From everything I have heard the friends and the shops report, shipping is the way to go - NOT the airlines. Not to mention that the airlines insurance rules are just plain ridiculous.
Sarah did you think about driving to Little Red Riding Hood? All the airline hassle is why I chose to drive to Wyoming last year. It did take two days and we had the time. It might not be worth it for a weekend.

Oh, yeah. I've driven to SLC more times than I can count. Only the drought in Idaho has kept us from doing the migration at least 2x a year lately. I hate the drive. If Bubba is driving we can do it in 11 1/2 hours. If Petunia and I are driving, it would be more like 21 1/2 hours. Neither of us do the really long distances in 1 day. I am a long distance sleeper and knitter. This is a case where it is the destination not the journey.
I want to have the saved time with my MIL that we wouldn't have if we were driving. She's turning 95 in July and going strong but needs help with major chores.
You gals will love this. She just went to a pain clinic because she's been starting to have a lot of pain in her hip -- after putting in 6 hrs volunteering in the emergency room once a week. :eek: My legs hurt after standing on a concrete floor for 6 hours!
Nope, no comparisons here. I don't care what it ends up costing. I went with the bike shop owners rec. He uses them regularly to ship bikes much more costly than mine. And I wanted it to go ground... if it goes on a plane, it gets opened again.
I don't want no more TSA mens running their hands over my baby. They hurt her last time. :(
As to the cost of this particular shipping I won't know til the shop gets invoiced. Then I'll get invoiced for the crankset upgrade and the shipping... But I'll let you know when I know.
Also, if you're not mechanically inclined remember the bike has to be rebuilt on the receiving end. If you're doing it, pack tools in your checked luggage. If you're not, have it shipped to the shop that will rebuild then break it down and ship it home.
Thanks, FedEx does have ground service but if your LBS said he'd had good luck with UPS that would certainly convince me. I just did an estimate on FedEx for a high end bike and it wasn't horrendous so I didn't have to pick myself up off the floor. :D
No problems with the dis- and re-assembly, I'm just concerned that I'll get it packed so that it won't get squished. I'm thinking that I might just have Canyon Cyclery at the SLC end receive and return so they can take care of any damage that might occur during shipment. Long way to go if your bike doesn't make it intact.

I went to the TE club stats page on Bike Journal and discovered that although I've journaled 385 miles on BJ, on the club stats I'm down for zero miles. The miles that I logged before the club don't count. Before I write to Slantz about this, does anyone here know anything about how to make all my miles show on the TE Club page?

Hmmm....We created the club just about, what, three weeks ago? All my miles from 2005 transfered over. It doesn't display 2004 miles and, if any of your miles are indoors, you may not have your "display all miles" option clicked in your "member options" under "edit profile" under the "riders" pull-down menu. Whoops, nevermind. I can see your miles when I go to club home and click on club statistics.Quote:

Yeah, baby! Our club is ranked 27th in miles out of 446 clubs (not that I'm gloating or proud or anything - I only feel a sisterly bond with all my fellow cycling clubs :p ) Now we just have to get MM join up.... and anyone else here at TE who would be so kind as to come on over!
