I tried to tell my husband to humor me and take a gander, he is a saltwater fisheries biologist by education but he tells me when you have been out four years wihtout working you are no longer a biologist. So I guess I am now married to a botanist?

Yesterday, I noticed that the crocuses are coming out. Several lawns in our neighborhood get carpeted in them -- my annual sign that spring will get here before long.

Despite this being the coldest winter in ages with more snow than in many many years, the daffodils are already poking up here... makes me hope that spring is just around the corner. I'm looking forward to warmer weather and longer days soon when I can have time to enjoy it!
Got my manuscript sent back to my advisor. One thing crossed off the list that has been weighing on me for a long time.
Think I will celebrate with a bowl of rice pudding. Mmmm......

I have an Army Captain flying down this week to do some damage control on a refuge where she didn't coordinate with the Refuge folks like she was supposed to. So we're field tripping to look at their levees. Hopefully she isn't flying back out on thursday - I plan to corrupt her. There are Mardi Gras parades to attend. Need to get the chickie out of the green suit, into civies, and make her wave her arms in the air, begging for beads. :D

Last night the power went out all over our region for 2 1/2 hours...never found out why, but it was rather annoying. One second you're happily working on your computer and stuff is humming all around you...and the next second you're hurled into total blackness and silence, left to thoughtfully contemplate all the freshly fragmented brain cells on your hard drive and to formulate your blind Journey of Danger downstairs to the kitchen drawer where the flashlights are.
I made tea in the open fireplace though, which was fun in a 'frontier' sort of way. Water boils VERY quickly over red hot coals. :eek:
I put up 3 online blogs these past few days, which was fun. Ah, the boundless enthusiasm of the newbie blogger... :rolleyes:

Morning all! I'm feeling a little more cheerful today. The sun is shining and I've got bike pottering planned. Need to give it a good clean and attempt changing the chain. But first I'm having french toast for breakfast.
Didn't realize rice pudding was a southern thing? Very common here in UK. Didn't have any rum sauce on hand so I just stirred in some dried berries. Tasted very good.
I'd love to join you for Carnival, BMC! Sounds like fun and I'm always up for being corrupted.

Well DH and I finally got out on our bikes today....wheeee!
It was about 30F and nice and sunny, slight breeze, dry roads. We stayed nice and warm and had great fun on our short ride.
We did 12 miles on a nice route with easy rolling hills (boy am i out of shape!) and a back road with a closed/condemned bridge going over RR tracks. Its recently closed, but horseback riders (obviously;)) go over it all the time, so a couple of lightweight bikers should be ok. Since the road is blocked there, the highway Dept has not been maintaining or cleaning the road for a year now, and that section of road has become a min-wilderness, with tree limbs down, debris, leaves, ice, and horsepoop everywhere. Sort of fun to walk through the wild frontier section of road. We crossed paths with two nice teenage boys on their bikes going the other way, and we cautioned each other about ice up ahead. Fun. :) Someone long ago dumped a pair of 3 foot tall plastic xmas lawn figures there in the woods near the bridge. A santa and a snowman. People keep standing them up one at each road block on either side of the closed bridge, like sentries- strange plastic bridge trolls. When they fall over in the wind someone always puts them back at their posts. :D
The past two days have been great weather for riding but it's been a week since surgery and I still wake up in pain.

I miss my bike. It's at the shop being frame-saver-ed. How often should you do that anyway? This one had never been, but others have....Every few years? Even if not ridden in rain?

Thanks, but it's my heart and lungs that feel out of shape. (of course the heart 'is' a muscle) My legs were just fine on the hills, but my breathing was very labored and it felt uncomfortable. maybe part of it was the cold air, but I felt much more out of breath than I did on those same hills last Fall. ...Thank goodness my quads miraculously survived the winter in good shape. I love my quads, they are the best body feature I've gotten from biking so far! :DQuote:
