Am new here, but not new to cycling. Hailing from Vancouver, BC.
Before I cycled for over a decade in Toronto before moving where I am now.
I was involved in a women's cycling group for a few years in Toronto. We had to fold the group because we couldn't find volunteers to take over us, the organizing committee.
I have been cycle commuting to work, at times, it's gotten complicated because of where I work/weather, etc. Ride regularily on weekends for destressing and fitness. have done loaded bike touring in eastern part of Canada, Hawaii, etc. Out of town trips with my partner who is a (high active) local cycling advocate. (He himself has done loads of cycling ..across Canada and US).
Wow the Vancouver group is growing. Maybe we should be organize the next TE gathering of the PNW!

If there's a TE gathering in Canada, I'm there! I'll take whoever can be persuaded to come along. Come to think of it, I haven't been to Calgary since 1980...:cool: THAT is when I learned that there were lovely British soldiers there in Banff.

Coq = Coquihalla Highway. High in the mountains between Vancouver and Kelowna. Lots of snow.
Another Canadian checking in - I'm in Calgary.
I packed the bike away a couple of weeks ago. The snow and cold didn't bother me much but I was getting tired of getting gravel thrown in my face every time a car passed.
I'm hoping to do the MS ride this June. Anyone else doing the Calgary one?

Perth & Fremantle have a similar rivalry btwn the footy teams but it's not the same..

I have to admit the prairies have made it easy to start riding. I work in Chestermere and commuted by bike for 6 months in 2007. I couldn't ask for a flatter ride. When the wind cooperated it was the easiest thing in the world. I road to Irricanna one day and I think there was only one small coulee the whole ride. East of the city is just awesome for well paved roads with no traffic and no hills.
Sometimes, when I'm grinding up a hill here (cursing and wondering why I moved to probably the lumpiest part of the country), I think about riding in a much flatter area like you are. Oh well. :)
Hi other Canadians, as especially other Vancouver Islanders! I've been lurking here for a while, feeling all sad not having a road bike, and not seeing one in the budget. Mountain biking has lost some of it's enjoyment for me, this area being extremely hilly, and the trails all rocks 'n' roots .
Then just before Christmas, lo and behold, in the window of a pawn shop, calling to me:

Yay! We got a bargain on it, and I've been tweaking it to fit me in the last couple of weeks. Today there was actually some sun, so I went out for an hour or so. It was awesome.

Well, for a short answer, I'd say "Not really". Lots of stop lights and not many roads that you can get going on for any distance, other than the Island Highway. The ride from Nanaimo to Parksville (35km) on the highway is probably the nicest ride I've ever done around here, but that was almost 20 years ago back when I had my first road bike!
We only have two paths - the E&N trailway is really short (8km). The Parkway Trailway is 20km but full of really short and steeps with lots of blind spots where you can't see the occasional dog walker or kid weaving across the path ahead of you.
The roads in Cedar (rural area) are popular place to road ride around here, but I haven't as of yet tried them. I've been mountain biking and commuting (15 minutes) for the last 10 years or so, and haven't tried many road routes. I know from driving that the roads are pretty narrow and people tend to drive fast.
Compared to other cities I've lived in (Ottawa, Winnipeg), Nanaimo is not very roadie friendly.
Ok, thanks. Kind of as I suspected, as we really never hear of Nanaimo being a cycle-friendly city. Still might make an interesting day of discovery one day this summer.
I've cycled twice in Nanaimo since we've moved here to Vancouver in late 2002. We did a ride with one of the local groups, Chain Ring Gang or name similar to that, where we cycled from Duncan through the Cowichan Valley area. There are some interesting people in Nanaimo area, including a cyclist who is over 82 -85 yrs. old. I could never forget the time, when he was cycling with us on a drizzly, rainy day about 15 degrees C. He was in shorts while the rest of us were more well protected from rain.Quote:

As a note about victoria, we seem to go to Victoria and surroundings by bike several times annually. Yea, well we have to leave home before 5:00 am by bike, to catch the lst ferry to Vancouver island.. for me to power nap and be awake on time, while we are cruising by the Gulf Islands. :)

As a suggestion, if you ever return to Montreal by train, to bring your bike onboard.
Vancouver is best appreciated after living in other parts of Canada/the world. Yes, with the exception of rain during winter, it's great. Cycling is nearly year round.
Just brace yourself for accommodation costs in Vancouver, if you ever want to relocate here. Montreal is cheaper.. and so is Toronto.
