It's even better when you compile the highest numbers from your riding companions' computers.
I had a Garmin watch that would just turn off like that when I plopped it down somewhere. And I don't mean throwing it down, but anything less than very gentle would sometimes cause it to just go blank.
I haven't had that problem with a 305, yet. I had to send one back in January because it freaked out when I tried to turn it on. Luckily dh was able to get the stats off of it and then sent it in. I got a refurbished one, only to have it stolen when our house was burglarized. Now I have a brand new one that seems to be doing okay, except it does do a weird thing when I turn it on sometimes. It will beep loudly and go to some unusual screen with lots of tiny words on it. I don't bother to read them because I just need to get the thing working and go for my ride! When I turn it off and then on again, it usually works fine.
My elevation climbed part seems to be all over the place though. I rarely look at it, but when I do it jumps from 10% to 6% to 8% to 10% to 5%. Not like my first.
Yeah, Garmins are wonderful and frustrating all at the same time. But I SO love having all that info right there!!!
I had this happen to me twice in a 32 mile ride a couple weeks ago and just figured I had done something. Nice to know it wasn't me, but upsetting to know this may be a continuing problem. I haven't had mine for very long either. :(
Is anyone still having this problem after last week's 2.40 firmware update? I see in the release notes that it's supposed to address a battery sensor problem that was causing random shutdowns.
My 301 snaps very firmly into the handlebar mount, but I really have to push it in hard. Is it possible you weren't getting it in all the way? I always did use the wrist strap as backup, loosely fastened just in case, but it never came off even on some pretty rough roads.
Sounds like Garmin has released software or firmware updates.

Of course, they can't seem to get my email address into their system so once again I find out through others. Thanks, Oakleaf.
Which product are you using?
Is this for the 705?

It doesn't match with the Edge 305 update page.

Yes, the 705.
Go to the product page on garmin.com, click on "Updates & Downloads" on the right, then download the WebUpdater app. That application works for all the fitness units (maybe all their units, I don't know). You can also download updates to Training Center from the same page.
On the Mac, you have to actually run the WebUpdater app periodically (with the GPS connected to the computer). DH's Windows box automatically updates his car GPS, but as I said, I'm not sure if that's the same WebUpdater.
Confused about this - DH says we're up to version 3.2 (and he's definitely still having the problem with shutting down). Was there really something specific from garmin addressing the problem? Do you have a link?
- ETA: DUh - I just remembered this dialogue yesterday and mentioned to DH without reading the following posts to know it was the wrong unit being discussed. Never mind.... (said in a Gilda Radner voice).
Wow, I bought one of these about a year ago from REI and returned it within a few wks because it just wouldn't work right AND it was turning off. I couldn't understand how I rode 2 hours and only went 4 miles?! Good to know it wasn't just me. But I feel for the people that have been relying on it. That's not right, they should figure out how to fix it.
DH has now broken his open and is fixing the contacts.

Not for the faint of heart (I hate breaking things open), but it seems to be going very smoothly.
OMG! :D
