Jane- I've only seen an ind.bunting once here in my life- beautiful!!!!! You are so lucky. I heard one sing once- a very pretty dainty song.

Zencentury- I would really wonder how many days those "hot dogs" had been on the rollers at the 7-11.....

BMO3- I have indoor cactus too! I started growing them because my cats kept messing up and chewing my "regular" houseplants. I had a mental "plant frustration meltdown" a while back and tossed all my mangled indoor plants and got some cactus instead. We could compare ours! :D
Tell us what you got, and pictures please. Mine need some repotting too. Now you've inspired me to give them bigger pots for the Spring.

OK, moving on from buffalo burgers....what's the most unusual meat all of you gals have eaten? I want to know, in a strange twisted way....:eek:

Lisa - I've had rattlesnake, alligator, turtle, squirrel, and raccoon. The first three were fine, the last two were nauseating.

Lisa: I've had bear, venison, reindeer, ants and grasshoppers (those two both covered in chocolate)

Myself...not too exotic. I ate frog's legs as a child once. Buffalo & Elk. Ate a deer who committed hari-kari on my car once. Escargot & sea urchin & octopus, etc. Tripe (wonderful when prepared well). Quail, pheasant. Shad eggs, caviar, eel.

I've had all the more common wild meats... moose, elk etc. I tried bear once but didn't like it. I think that was more mental. Alligator, yes, no great shakes. I've eaten live crckets on a dare. The worst part is the guooosh when you bite down.

I'm sure I ate many things I don't want to know about when I was in China, does jelly fish count as meat? I did like yak meat. Loved the taste of the chicken hot pots but did not like finding the chicken head in the bottom of the broth at the end.:eek:

I forgot the frog legs. Sweet and sour frog legs at a Chinese spot in the Loire Valley. So good it hardly counted as exotic.

I've had ostrich jerky. Not my favorite.

Wahine has me beat. Crickets and mealworms have been my 'most exotic' but then there's skurrl, too. :D

My father in law used to send the hubby back from college breaks with venison and ground moose. We used to make chili and spaghetti sauce with it since its very very lean and won't stick together to make burgers..
I'm more on the exotic sealife side I guess.. along with the fairly normal stuff - octopus, eel, squid, I've also had conch, sea cucumber (acutally quite yummy) and geoduck (unless you live in the PNW you may not have even ever heard of this one....)

I will send pictures after the are repotted and looking pretty. :) I am very excited about beginning a cacti garden! I think it will be placed on my dining room table. I had wanted to have them in my bay window for the time being, but that meant moving the cat's Kitty Pi bedding and she rebelled vocally all day yesterday until I restored her sacred space. :rolleyes:

BMo3 - They are very shy birds and I was amazed that he was on the feeder long enough for me to take a picture. We have them here each summer, but usually don't get much of a look at them. They are truly gorgeous - if you see them in the bright sunlight they look almost neon.

On a side note - if I had been at work instead of home recovering, I would have missed him, too!

I will happily send pictures after I repot them and make them look even more stunning then they already are, plus I have a feeling I may buy a few more. They are addicting! :eek: I currently have; Tiger Aloe (Aloe Zanzibarica), Cinnamon Bunny Ears (Opuntia Rufida), Bunny Ears (Opuntia Microdasys), Mini Caterpillar (Echinopsis Cristata Minima).

Which cacti do you have? Any suggestions on which ones I should be looking into? Any cacti advice would be greatly appreciated. I tend to ahve a black thumb. :(

I am fairly boring in this area. Buffalo and venison are the most exotic meat I have had.

How are you feeling and how is your recovery coming along?

I've eaten Alligator & Goat. Both tasted good. The Goat was incredibly good. I don't consider venison or elk unusual.

Now organ meats, I've eaten brains, spleen, heart, kidney, pancreas, tripe (stomach) and tongue.

BMO3 why dont you grow plants for your indoor cats?

Well I have a very, very black thumb. :o It is not that I dislike plants, quite the opposite I adore them. I just do not do well with them. :o The cat has never cared for any plant except the one succulent I bought yesterday. She loves it. :D

I am feeling great! In fact, believe it or not I just got off the bike. I posted a "ride report" in my surgery thread in the Health forum. I am almost beginning to feel guilty about being on sick leave. :rolleyes:

I ate sea cucumber once, yuk. It probably goes down as the grossest thing I've eaten. I do like goat meat.

And I always try to eat the shark before it eats me.

I was all geared up to try scorpions on a stick in China. But ty the time I got my courage up the season ended and my opportunity was gone. Probably a good thing.

I was forced to eat various organ meats as a child. I avoid them now. Kidney was the worst. I'll still eat liver, kinda like it.

Now you all understand why I cannot truly call myself a buddhist, I like to eat meat. Having said that, I try to eat meat responsibly. That's one of the reasons I like wild meat so much. IMO it's the most humane way of harvesting meat. Those animals were happily running along, then it's over, no feed lots etc.

How hard was the Kitty PI to make? I've been thinking of trying for a while....I've done hats, socks, etc. Just nothing specifically for the kitties (though they love to drag my knitting all over the house given the chance:cool: :cool:

Of course, it's hard to knit this time of year - all I want is to be outside....

But, we're moving. And now the house we bought has even more problems:mad: :mad: At least hopefully we'll be there for a long time:)

Oh my no. They are super easy and fast, fast, fast. Did I mention it was a quick knitting project? I used some thick Norwegian wool from Elann and this free pattern: http://wendyknits.net/knit/kittybed.htm

I watched some PBS thing on the harvesting of Geoducks, the whole thing looked wrong. :rolleyes:

Eeeew....Geodongs are GROSS!!!!!!!

I like "normal" clams though! :D Oh and now I remember I did used to eat both conch and goat too when I lived in the carribean.

Jennifer, your cacti are beautiful! A very nice variety, and I really do like the way you have arranged them - balance without symmetry. :)

Nice work! That cat thing you made is awesome!! Do you take orders? I would love to put a few of those around the house....the blankets here and there never look very tidy, although they are definitely easier to clean than the upholstery!

And I'm so glad you are feeling well enough to post so many and such lively posts! yay!

All that talk of strange foods and what geoduck looks like and....whew. Good thing I was too busy at work to comment much! They'd really start to wonder about me, I think!

Geoducks are not well known on the east coast. When my grandmother saw them for the first time on a visit here in Seattle, She was horrified, and did not believe they were real! (and they do taste good, and they should not be harvested, you're right!)

Oh no! they're Knitted! I don't knit, I crochet. I think I'm going to try and do it by crochet instead.

Thanks for the feedback on the kitty pi - I need to get to work on socks for sockapalooza 4 (don't ask!), and then I could do something like that!

Hrm....house. We've been living in a condo for a couple of years. It's nice, we own it, and the HOA SUCKS! Our dues have gone up 50% over 2 years, and we're averaging 2k in assessments per year. So, we started looking at houses and trying to sell the condo ourselves. Note to realtors: if the house is FSBO, I do NOT want a call from you telling me I'm crazy and I *need* your services... We still haven't sold the condo.

So, we found a house we like in the neighborhood we wanted. We knew the owner. We signed a contract, closed (the financing is F'd up, and our erstwhile mortgage broker can't fix it the way he said he could to get us to close). We were kind enough to lease back to the prior owner for 1 month so they could close on a new house and move.

The house was built in 1912. We knew we needed cabinets. Taken care of (except running a week late). We knew we needed foundation work. OK. We knew we needed to re-inforce the roof supports. OK. When prior owner moved out, we discovered that the darling little not-house-trained (and apparently not-cleaned-up after) dogs have turned the floors in one room black. Apparently they had in another room, and the prior owner tried to re-finish and turned the floor bright red. Not attractive. I have dogs. They're house trained. I clean up if they have an accident. Apparently this was too much to ask.

So, we need to re-finish the floors. This shouldn't be a huge deal. But for some reason that, and the fact that the ceiling fan that was installed so they could take the light fixture is wired wrong and the fact that the entire house was FILTHY, have me coming unglued. We hoped to move mothers day weekend. Likely going to get pushed back since the floor guy hasn't even done a quote yet. And I'm thinking we won't get to go out of town for memorial day weekend. Not good. I've been through a really rough patch at work and NEED a break. Now I'm thinking that downsizing into an older house was a really BAD idea. Not sure why. It's walking distance to Whole Foods, and it's a great neighborhood - it just doesn't seem like home.

So....long story, but you asked:o :o Any advice or words of wisdom??

Very pretty:) I've discovered that my citrus trees do quite well around cats too. Guess the spines are a nice deterrent:cool:

CA, sorrey to hear about your "new" house. It's one thing when you know what you're getting into, and to know that there's always "something" else. Sounds like your extra somethings are pretty annoying, pretty expensive and pretty gross.

I sure hope these people you bought from that you say you knew, were not considered friends! My goodness!

Try to be patient. It can still end up feeling like home! You can do this. In so many ways the neighbourhood and location are much more important than the house itself!

As for the floors, any chance you can replace instead of refinish? I'd be so worried that the smell and whatever would not be gone with refinishing.....not sure, it depends on the floor material, etc.

Happy house fixing butterflies! They're all sorts of colours and spreading the workload lightly between many hands, and making the jobs that look huge end up being much simpler to fix than you'd ever expected. Cool, aren't they?
