Vikings can be pretty laid back about quakes too. We felt a 4.4 from over in San Jose the year Baby Bear and I were in Santa Cruz. I remember he was doing homework in the living room and I was in the bathroom when there was a rumble and shake and Baby Bear called out "Mom? Was that an earthquake?" "Probably. Unless a giant truck just raced by." "How big was it?" "Um, any books fall out of the bookshelf?" "No" "Light fixture swinging?" "Yeah" "Then I'd say somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5, depending on how far away it was." "Oh. Cool!" I reminded him of it today. He'd forgotten.

I've been through tornados and hurricanes but NOTHING scared me like that little quake, I think it was the whole "no place to hide" thing that freaked me out.

You just learn to read the weather, heck by the time a kid is 10 or so they can tell you what a tornado sky looks like. Those quakes sneak up on you and you can't hide, what do you guys do when one strikes...run outside and jump up in the air?

sounds like a fun time at snap's house. though i'm not suppose to drink due to meds..... but what the doc doesn't know can't hurt her :rolleyes: right? specially if kit is playing bartender!

when the big one hit here, Nisqually Quake 6.8 in February 2001, that's just what I did, Queen. I was in the lab we call "the control room" and everything started to shake. I knew there was nowhere to hide. So I ran outside and held onto a jersey barrier until the shaking stopped. (Jersey barrier, a concrete thing that keeps cars in their own lanes.) I watched as the flight tower swung back and forth and also a panicked crane operator hanging on for dear life.
Because of that quake, we got a new control room. It was "totalled"

But we've had some fun quakes too, where everything just gently does a pendulum swing..

Yowza! I was working up on Beacon Hill at the VA Hospital during that one. Everything started creaking and sounded like there was a train going through the room next door. I was helping a client/coworker at the time and we both just braced in a doorway until it was over. Then I went around and locked all of the doors and went outside. One thing we all learned was that *nobody* remembered what to do and where to go in an emergency and that's not a good thing in a hospital. We had a bunch of training and drills after that. All in all there was a lot of superfical stuff - cracks and the like, but no real damage and no one hurt, even at the American Lake campus that was very near the epicenter.

Eden, it was that quake that made my company stand up and take notice.
we are VERY catastrophe aware now. we have evacuation maps everywhere,
safety meetings, etc, etc

One of our patients was in an MRI tube during that one. The staff evacuated the building, but forgot about him! He rode the quake out, still in the tube, then extracted himself and went out into the parking lot where the staff was... I wouldn't've wanted to be the person in charge of radiology that day!

I was in a coffee shop during the Nisqually, and we all ran to the big plate glass window to see what was happening. Oopsy.

Oopsy is right! I have a window cubicle at work - at the first sign of shaking I get out of the cube and away from the window.

Our big one - Loma Prieta - I was on the floor holding my dog Rikki. I didn't realize how bad it was, until a friend called from Washington DC to see if I was OK. He's the one that told me a section of the Bay Bridge had collapsed. Shortly after that the phone went out. Fun times.:(

The quake was in the pacific and no one was hurt. Further, they are calling off the tsunami warnings. But it WAS a big quake 8.3!!!

Is it just me or do there seem to be an awful lot of earthquakes happening lately??

I saw a really great graphic once of the "Ring of Fire" in the pacific with EQs as dots all along the edges of the pacific ocean. It was very neat. It might've been in one of my geology textbooks. (now long gone)

Naw, the ones on these recorders this morning are just little stinkers. Somewhere I saw the recorder from the Nisqually quake, that was nice and juicy. the ones for Mt. St. Helens are busy little boogers.

The recent EQ history page is pretty cool. Never felt any of those. Little bitties going on all the time.

I have the usgs earthquake map in my favorites at work. Shows all the quake activity for my area. Those suckers are happening all the time!

Today is dog torture day. Toenails and Bortadella booster. Good thing she loves her vet, and riding in the car.

No snow. I'm disappointed - clear blue sky and 32 degrees when I woke up. Yesterday, Dad decided all my lemons and oranges need to be picked RIGHT NOW. So I have 3 grocery bags of Meyer Lemons, and 2 bags of oranges. I found a recipe for Yucatan Lemon Soup, guess I'll give it a try.

I signed up many moons ago to lead a Velo Girls ride, the Velo Girls Single Gals only ride (this was before Trek and Knott were Trek_n_Knott).

Wouldn't you know it's the coldest earthquakiest tsunamiest day of the year. Weather report in Portola Valley is saying 27 degrees...but hey, it's warming up!! One dgree an hour or so.

What do you bet we'll have coffee and file a fictitious ride report? ;)

Well, I thought no one would be there but 11 brave women showed up for the Velo Girls ride.

It was coooooooold. But I'm checking out the cold weather gear, right?

Note to self: self? your full finger gloves have tiny ventilation holes in them, if it's that cold again-get glove liners or disposable plastic gloves I hear is a very cheap effective solution.

Also most there had the ear flap things, I don't wear them because for some odd reason they make my glasses fog up. :eek:

Need to figure out another way to keep my ears warm.

But it really was beautiful. Clear, crisp, NO wind which was great, if there had been windchill that would be bad.

The Alpine Inn where we start and end has no coffee, well they have instant...therefore look for the Velo Girls Girls who like Girls ride to move locations in the future.

So no coffee and a non-fiction ride report. But excellent prep for your February ride here. I have many glove iterations, and also multiple headbands---you can borrow from me if need be. Not to mention Knot and her vast collection of woolies.

Trek - have you tried earbags? I have leopard print 'bag for my shell like ears, they keep them toasty warm.

Hi, DS and his GF came over tonight and she pulled up her shirt and pulled out a pink pillowcase. Inside of it was a cute little snake. I got to hold it even. THey named it Oroboris or "BORIS" It is about to molt (you can see its eyes are cloudy.) I let two of my cats meet the snake, and both of them thought he smelled wonderful. So I tried to smell the snake and couldn't smell a thing. I found myself feeling envious of the cats because I clearly had no clue as to the wonders of snake scent. Anyway; here "he" is:

It was kinda neet that before yesterday I would say "oh, I never ride when it's below 60 something" and I had a great time!

Was online awhile yesterday morning, went home to do laundry and started feeling the stomach buggish unhappiness that was going around so I just stayed home with my sistahs on the phone.

They kept me good company until I went to bed early. Woke up later than usual this morning, still sleepyish but always things to do. Can always nap.

I see there's tension with Mr. Silver on the boards etc...
Now, I'm not generally the type to have to run and take a shower after a man's shadow passes over me, or whatever.... not too worried about a guy reading about chafed labia etc...

BUT
I do have a couple points of curiosity.
Why is he so much more prolific in his posting than Silver ever was?
Why on earth would he take such grand interest in what would be to all outside male observance is a forum-den of Amazons and Glamazons, many very much concerned with the safety and sanctity of their estrogen-laden forums, where concerns of a most private matter (relationship-wise and physically oriented) are read and answered by women.

Another point of curiosity for me, a week after the fact,
Why was TD moved?
TD was a sisterhood in every right. Yes, people developed their own little circles of main acquaintences, but despite occasional cattiness etc, we all knew the thread had one great purpose- Greater than any one of us alone. That puropose was to create a space where we could bring our most heartfelt joys and pains and share them with women who "got" it. It was precious to alternative women but possibly particularly so to the straight women, who often, (I took it, I mean, I could be wrong) needed someone with a woman's mind and woman's understanding to talk to.
We were family, and although we knew it was 'public' it took awhile for people to find it, they'd glance in, lurk, get overwhelmed and leave, or would stick with it, find understanding in the currents of the subplots, and become part of the sisterhood themselves...
It's over now, fundamentally changed, but I still need to know 'why'. We held a vote around August (I think?) as to whether or not it would be moved, and the general concensus was negative. Where, then, was the motivation for the sudden move?
Was this planned? If then, it was obviously not planned by those whom it most concerned and was thus lacking in fairness.
Was it just a sweeping decision made by moderators and administrators? If then, I'd like a reason.
Were there complaints that lead to this action? If so, I don't need names, I want to know what the complaints were.

Occasionally, You will suffer a sudden change in your life, to which there is no rhyme or reason. Swift enough that though you struggle for understanding, you cannot. Although we've patched together our sisterhood, one sister has reached to another and our little dysfunctional family re-established, it will never be the same;
and I want to know why because without that, I cannot make peace with it.

Kit - None of the TDers did it, and no-one else is saying.

Kits - you are another one who can write so well. I enjoy reading your posts and am always amazed and impressed at your level of insight.

I hear what you're saying, but do you really feel that it will never be the same? Perhaps it won't here, out in the "open" in OT, but not even in the other, less exposed places? Maybe because I am one of the sorta outsiders on TD (yet continue to post anyway, tee hee :rolleyes: ), the other threads feel ok to me. I was initially shocked to see it "out there" in OT on that first day and I tend to avoid this particular thread now for that very reason. But I am beginning to feel at home at the other two threads and hope that one or the other eventually wins out to make reading simpler. I guess what I'm trying to say is that, from my point of view, the group of women is the important part, not the venue. I love to read all of the witty, thoughtful, supportive, and sometimes heart-wrenching posts (ok I don't like reading the sad ones but I do like seeing the support and hugs.) I love the intelligent conversation and appreciate the advice and support I have received myself. Not only are you a group of women who bike (and I do not have access to a group like that IRL), but you are all so bright, articulate, and interesting people. I truly hope that TD can live on, in some other state or country. :)

As for who made it change, I'm curious as well - has anyone emailed the moderators and asked? At any rate, what's done is done. Can't go back so may as well not dwell on it and just move forward. I hope to see y'all down under, or up north. :)

This mod doesn't know why. I gotta be honest, I would never have known it moved, except someone PM'd me. I don't look at the different forums. When I sign onto TE, I hit New Posts and go from there. So the move has made no difference to me. I was half expecting TD to get closed down just because of it's sheer size. I don't know what effect that has on the forums as a whole.

Is there tension? I know Mr S asked if it was OK, and was given the go ahead by many of us here. You have to admit, we are a kinder, gentler forum. Some of the other sites can be very.....testosterone laden. None of the helpfulness or encouragement that makes TE what it is - but lots of competition and challenges. Can you blame him for wanting to be here?;)

I was going to go to the movies today, but my sister called and wants to come over and show me her pix from Germany. Maybe tomorrow, since I have the day off.

Change happens. Nothing ever stays the same, nor can we erase things that have happened and put them back exactly as before. It's usually more healthy to look for the positive in change and move forward than it is to dwell on the negative. It helps us grow, and can also sometimes help us discover unexpected new insights. TE is an incredibly warm, supportive, and wonderfully dynamic group.
