It's true. Active cyclists, both men AND women, tend to look mean and lean after 40, whereas men AND women bikers over 40 seem in general to have large amounts of flab and pot bellies, etc. It gets worse in their 50's. I think it's all the beer.Quote:

That's like saying all cyclists are whip-thin, wiry power plants with rippling calves of steel and thighs that kill well into their 50s... It's just not true. It's purely dependent on one's lifestyle. Yes, it's a different scene, but depending on my mood, sometimes the biker crowd suits more. Maybe I'd rather discuss the ins and outs and benefits of a DOHC vs. a SOHC... valve clearance or rejetting instead of how my clips are clipping or whether or not my shimano suits me better than your campy; whether my underarmor is better than wool...
But thanks, and I'll bear in mind that doing my SOMA job and then using a SOMA method of transportation may make me gain weight.

Dar, BMO3 go take a nap! I just awoke from a nearly three hour nap. It was wonderful. I feel much better that a did before it.
Kit- You could always try out the leather on your bike, a little experiment to see who you attract? :D I know one cyclist who is pretty easy on the eyes, but I keep him in my bed.:eek: :D :p

When I lived in Euge I'd have my rough little bike, docs, leather jacket, shades and such... I've attracted... er.... quite interesting people. :D I suppose my black leather-silver-riveted Brooks is going to have to be enough.... ;)

Oddly enough, victorian-era styling is coming back to a lot of things. 'retro' is extending much further than before. Cabaret is regaining popularity in the music scene. I've been forcing some of the music on my friends, with limited success. *shrug* not everyone's taste. Not sure what it is... but within the last couple of years I've seen 'cabaret' and 'burlesque' shows gaining much more popularity- punk kids with top hats, gloves and intricate tattoos... girls with perfect, white makeup, long stockings and silver Monroes.

I bought my 28 year old son BOWTIES (the kind you must tie) for Christmas.
He LOVES them. (and they are older than I am)
Individuality and creativity of dress are always a good thing. And often a source of amusement...
My DH likes to wear simple well made sort of old-fashioned wool and canvas and flannel stuff that never goes in OR out of fashion. Between that and his beard and his glasses, sometimes suspenders, he does look rather old fashioned. The other day someone said "Hey man, I like your 19th century working man look!". We looked at each other and burst out laughing- he doesn't think of it as a "look"- it's just normal "him"!
And me, when I'm not in my biking woolies and lycra- I have long dresses in soft natural flax cloth in earthy colors that I feel comfy in, and clogs and wool socks....I was eating breakfast once at the coffee shop counter and someone asked me if I was on my way to a Renaissance festival. I didn't quite know what to say, so I just said "Um, no...." and they looked mildly embarrassed. :cool:
I like it when people wear interesting clothes. I think the generic mall look is pretty boring.
I had a really nice black silk tie. *sigh* I gave away far too much when I moved. I love those kinds of stores where you can buy 'vintage' clothes...

We had fun doing the SCA thing, too. We were the Oldhams, Scottish mercenaries, available for hire. I was *in love* with my chainmail shirt... I had the whole setup. tall leather boots (hand made...) the tartan, (just a skirt and brat, no kilt for the women.... *eyeroll*) linen shirt, leather pouches/belt, dagger, etc etc. Too much fun. My 'persona' was a pretty raunchy character, too. *grin* Still, I honestly don't miss messing with the wool kilt/skirt/etc. freakin' itchy.

Hello TD. I'm back home after a 4 day family visit to MIssouri. This was the first visit of FSIL (future son-in-law) to my parents house, so had to introduce him to the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. That's why we got stuck in an elevator compartment in the Gateway Arch for 5 minutes. My grandmother turned 95 yesterday (and my sister turned 52 the same day and I turn 51 in about an hour). She proceeded to hold the blocks and walk around the room on her feet and hands/blocks. She had some long hospitalizations/rehabs last year and we really thought we were going to lose her, but she's pulled through and keeps as active as she can. She claims she doesn't want to live to be 100, but has adopted reaching 96 as her next goal.
I just scared the crud out of my honey... my bad.
I sliced my thumb open and freaked myself out (SKnot stayed calm and got me paper towel, etc.). So, of course, I wrote a PM about my gushy icky thumb, sitting holding the nasty thing shut. Cuz I was still shaking and scared!
Poor honey called me immediatly asking if I needed to go to the ER. Aw, man, I shouldn't tell her these things! Especially when she's several hundred miles away and unable to do anything except panic!

Kewlona, I am so sorry your daughter has a boyfriend. I was sure that MY son would show her the error of her ways and she would turn into the perfect daughter. My son is the perfect codependent. He spends all of his energy worrying about other people's problems and neglects his own. He plays french horn. Knows lots of musician jokes and rides a Fixty bike.
