I think you have what made me miserable about three weeks ago. It's our busy time at work (nearing the end of the Fiscal Year) so I couldn't take leave. Anyway, if it's the same thing, it takes about a week before you start feeling OK. It's a persistent virus--I'm still dealing with residual booger-ness from it.Quote:

I'm making oven-roasted Lipton Onion Soup potatoes for dinner, with salmon, which is marinating in (real) sherry, soy sauce, lemon juice and brown sugar (out of ginger). I think I will cook it in foil on the grill. It's so hot out. Never made salmon before...
That chicken soup sure sounds good. My two soup specialties are Cream of Wild Rice and Bean with Tomatoes, Chiles and Ham.
Waiting for tech support from Cingular to call me to see why I can't call my home area code from my cell phone of a different area code, when I am in the home area code, and get a message saying it's a call to which long distance charges apply, please dial 1, but I can't do that either. I have a Nationwide plan- this just started for no reason two weeks ago...
I just learned today that correct electrolyte replacement will reduce/eliminate black toenails and blisters on a really long run.

I just read Karl King's article about the relationship between electrolyte status and foot problems.
I ran Croom 50k in April 2004 and subsequently lost both big toenails. (So no chance to lose them at Wickham Park 2004) Quarter-sized blisters on my big toes, and a row of smaller blisters at the base of other toes after both runs.
Wickham Park 2005, lost both big toenails. Same blistering as above.
Wickham Park 2006, one teeny blister, all nails intact!
Now, I've been taking Succeed S! Caps as long as I've been running, ( but you know how it goes- you miss a dose, or forget for a while, or skip one because you just ate or drank something...) but Wickham Park 2006 was the first time I set a timer on my watch and took an S! Cap every 30 minutes no matter what for the entire 10 hours I was on the course. Nothing else changed- same shoes, socks, foot prep, etc.
Could it really be that simple?

the electrolytes dialed in and the black toenails healed over a few months.
That was the end of my black toenails.
This subject came up when Kevin Sayers and I were doing a practice climb up
the south side of Hope Pass on the LT100 course. To back up my claim of no
black toenails, I took off my shoes and socks and told Kevin, "If anybody
asks, you're my witness - no black toenails."
Maybe I've been lucky, but if so, it has lasted for years of running.
The only thing I changed was getting the electrolytes right. Same socks
(Ultimax ), same type of shoes, same types of terrain.

I had no idea about this black toenail and electrolyte thing. What happens there physiologically?
The salmon sounds great! I love grilled salmon - we do it in aluminum foil, too.
For dinner tonight - we're ordering gourmet pizzas (ha - we do have something cool here):
The "Delta Duck" - duck sausage with apple brandy, fresh tomatoes, asiago and mozzarella chesses and house made basil pesto.
The "Green and White" - grilled chicken breast, spinach, garlic alfredo sauce, asioago and mozzarella cheeses.
They are from a 5-start restaurant (only one in the Delta). It's an outstanding restaurant...great presentation, awesome food and service and atmosphere. Too bad it's $150/couple on average for dinner.
Makes up for the really aggravating day at work today. Incompetent and insubordinate people should be fired. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to happen.
The soup is done! I've already eaten 3 bowls of it. First thing I've really wanted to eat all day. I'm feeling much better now. Thanks for suggesting soup!
Now that I've eaten dinner perhaps I should shower and change out of my jammies and GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!
Need to take dog for a walk. (P.S. I did give him some soup.)

What I think is weird is I have three identical races three years in a row and the only thing that I changed was at the last one, taking electrolytes every 30 minutes without fail because of the timer, instead of just trying to watch my watch. I didn't even find the tiny blister until days later. Other years, my toenails would be black (actually pre-black pinkish purple) as soon as I took my shoes off, with blister juice coming out from under them at both ends, with huge blisters on my big toes and under my other toes.
I think when I ride the 200k July 1st, I'm going to put that watch somewhere on my bike with the alarm set.
BF hated the salmon. I guess it was too far removed from beef or chicken. I liked it, though.
Urugh...Pooey...Darn..:( The oilers lost game 7...My friend & I were having quite a ball during the game...whilst at work!!! I couldn't listen live but i could follow the typed play by play on nhl.com. My friend however could listen & was updating me.

Can you ladies tell me if i stay at 25km/hr on my bike on the flats, is that slow in mph? I'm still confused on if i'm spinning or mashing.
What's the best way to learn how to draft?? I'm ok at slow speeds but not too confident beyond that...

That's about my average speed. But that means I'm going faster on the flasts, by 1-5 mph, and a lot slower on hills or in wind.
I learned to draft by going on a long ride with a tolerant friend. It's nice to have someone who can ride really steadily and give good signals for road hazards, etc. Remember, if you touch the wheel ahead of you, you're the one who's going down.
Then just keep back at the distance you're comfortable with, and gradually get closer as you gain confidence. If the person ahead slows, just drift over to your left to slow down by drag, rather than braking and then getting too slow, and then having to really pedal to catch back up. Don't drift over to the right though, because if you overlap wheels, and the rider ahead moves closer to you, all you can do is go off the road. It only takes a couple seconds, usually, to get enough drag from the wind to slow you back down.
I have a hard time pulling in casual situations, because I have a hard time maintaining a constant steady speed. But if I'm in an actual paceline, at the front, then I am riding close to my max, so it's easier to maintain, because I'm not speeding up any more!
Another thing that took me a while to learn was to "soft pedal-" keeping the pedals turning without applying much force, if I was catching up, instead of coasting, because if you coast, then start pedaling again, you have a sort of jerk when you start up, which makes things not so smooth for the rider behind you.

Yay!!! I hope it survives the hot weather. I got my gift yesterday, and it had to go into the refrigerator for emergency resuscitation :-)
When drafting do not underestimate what Nanci said about Road Hazards. I learned drafting with my brother who is great at pointing to hazards, and my mum who is so anal about it that she points them out when we go on runs! The point is the overly cautious about hazards are much safer for you to ride with.
I rode with my aunt the other day, behind but not drafting. She wasn't on top of the pointing to hazards thing and I hit a few pot holes too big to ignore.
Know where the wind is coming from when drafting because it will affect what side you ride to. Take a look at the team time trial photos/videos from the Tour de France. You'll pick up a lot from looking at pros carefully.
I feel like Lord Stanley isn't going to be coming home for a long time! Its been 13 years since the cup last came to Canada.

I rode this morning. It seems as thought I'm a bit nervous about cars still. But - I did really good (much better) unclipping :). My stomach feels lousy today, so maybe that's why I didn't feel up to snuff this morning. I think a week of being totally sedentary after the crash is going to take a bit to recover from, too.
I made cinnamon rolls from scratch last night - we're cooking them this morning. 1st time for me. It's an Alton Brown recipe. I'll let you know how they are. They look right.
Oh Nanci - I tried the red and green sport beans together. You were right - it was great! It tasted like a cherry limeade to me :)

SELF INDULGENT PITY PARTY WHINE ALERT
I'm still sick. Slept until 1:00 this afternoon. Tried to call work to see how things were going, and they had the answering machine on. Usually that means things aren't going well. (can't spare anyone to answer the phone, so it all goes directly to the machine)
This is one weird cold. I feel worse today than y'day. My body hurts, my head wants to explode, sore throat, nausea, watery eyes, but no coughing or runny nose yet. And still have the anti-fever.
I'm craving Clif lemonade electrolytes. I'm sure that's from all this discussion of electrolytes and black toenails.
I'm not craving black toenails, however.....
Maybe it's not a cold??? You should drink some Endurance Gatorade- that would probably taste good to you. I also love pineapple juice when I have a sore throat, or gargling with apple cider vinegar.
Sorry you aren't feeling better yet.

Had to leave the house this afternoon to go get cough drops and coke and my MRI CD for my cancer check-up tomorrow. I was not walkin' pretty and didn't stay out long. Felt like I was gonna fall asleep at the red lights.
Craving coke, which seems to be staying where it belongs ok. Not so much the Clif, but I hate to dump it out.
How long can it last in the fridge, if you've been drinking from it?
KN, sorry you're feeling so sick! Sure sounds like the flu. Lay low, drink or eat what you can stand, this will pass. If it's a virus, it usually takes 7-10 days, seriously, to be done with. Sugar/salt/water can probably sit out of the frig for awhile, but not overnight, I'd guess. When in doubt, throw it out.
Nanci--what a cheerful picture! You must not be grumpy! :p That pigeon doesn't look like he'd bite at all! :D L.
Knottedyet - I think you gave me your cold! Hopefully I don't get the full blown yucks like you have. I have been developing a nice conjested head and runny nose all day. I pretty much can't breathe through my nose right now. I'm not achy - hopefully that stays. I have to go to work tomorrow. Might not be a full day. In-laws are coming into town also.

I am a twit...I came home tonight to go for a 35km ride & decided to pump up my tires...rururghghfgfghgfjgg...I ended up deflating them...:mad:
I managed to get one inflated but the other just wouldn't budge past 80psi. I had to walk away from the pump as it was becoming quite frustrating...nope..didn't work out...Even in my best ballerina pose...Ended up waiting for ian
I feel like a heffalump.
Anywho, i've decided i'm going to go for an early bike ride tomorrow morning...I'll have to leave my house around 440am-drop my stuff off at work & go do some sprints i think. (I work at 630 for the next couple of weeks so anything to keep me awake is good!!!)

CC--I know the feeling of heffalump-ishness! Sorry to hear your tires were so recalcitrant today. Better luck tomorrow. The weather report says rain and HAIL today...not riding bike to work. Didn't get up and run. Feel just plain lumpish. Going to do some yoga stretches, then to work at the clinic, and a night shift at the hospital. If rain and hail don't bring the babies, I don't know what will! :eek: :rolleyes: L.
Yup - I think I have a cold. At least I'm not as stuffed up today. Luckily I have a very competent technician and postdoc and summer worker. They are stocking 7500 itty bitty catfish into 150 tanks today.

Haven't seen him. Last week I saw him Thurs (riding south from home to volleyball), and Friday (riding from the north home from work). I didn't ride today because they were predicting severe thunderstorms and hail. It rained a smidge in the morning. It's now 1:30PM, and bright and sunny out! No hail yet. Rain, fer cryin' out loud! crazy- I actually postponed my swim workout to watch the game... game 7 of the final, wouldn't miss it. However, I didn't watch Coaches Corner. The other night, game 6 I think, I was annoyed b/c DC just talked about the previous game rather than the first period... :confused:
In-laws are in town. We had a good visit last night and the crabs were great! I was feeling better this morning, so I went out for a quick run. Felt good at first...ran further than I have so far... then hit a virtual brick wall and walked like a slug back to the house. Peachy.
So it goes sometimes. I've hit that wall at various points and cursed the fact that I had to get home under my own steam! At least on the bike you can pedal-pedal-coast!Quote:

I had a run like that once. I was out on some trail, at about the furthest point, at 12 miles or something, and it was in the afternoon, and I was hot, and I just ran out of energy. I had to trudge back _so_ far...

Luckily I didn't have to go that far. I run laps in my neighborhood, so the house wasn't too far away. I've been dragging all day, though. I had chocolate milk when I got back and just had a yogurt at my desk. Hopefully that will perk me up. I'm feeling a need for chocolate and my candy jar is empty... and I only have 1 quarter...crud. I think I'm going to run to the grocery store and get a banana and chocolate.
I don't like carrying water with me, but if I don't, my route is constrained to where there are water fountains. If I forget and deviate, I'm in bad shape. I have a water bottle with a mesh handle thing that makes it easier to carry. A pack of Sport Beans fits perfectly in the little zipper pouch it has. I don't know that the "bonk" would be instantly remedied by 100 cal of sugar + a bit of salt, but it couldn't hurt. Anybody here use those "fuel belts"? I hate the feeling of anything bouncing on my hips/back/belly, but I also hate carrying stuff in my hand. So I may get one, though I don't like spending the $ if I'm not going to use it...
Anyhoo, fish, maybe carry a pack of beans for use as needed next time. I do like the wheels idea. Makes me think of Phillip Pullman's books, His Dark Materials.

I was reading in the What Animals Do You See thread about someone's DH who saw a condor in the wild. I've been thinking about them all day. This link is to the story of the last free birds before they were captured and taken into captivity to try to save the species, and what happened to them in captivity, and how they all ended up. It's pretty short. I should feel happy for them, but it really makes me feel like crying, too.

I'm sure you're familiar with the ivory-billed woodpecker stories, right? Thought to be extinct, but a few credible sightings have been made. Oddly enough - my postdoc's husband is one of the people that has made a credible siting! They live in the Atchafalaya, which is where he saw it - 3 times! Now that's happier, eh?
Lise - I'm so new to running that I've seen the fuel belts, but haven't tried one. It looks uncomfortable to me. RunningMommy should have a solution to this, right? She's got to have a way to carry water with her in AZ! I don't know if she's lurking in this thread or not.
Got chocolate - have you noticed how expensive candy is these days? I bought Hershey's kisses. Bleh - I haven't had them in a while. They're pretty bad.
Gee, NPR reported this AM that MS is the unhealthiest state in the country and the the MS Delta (where I live) is the unhealthiest place in the state so therefore the unhealthiest place in the country. Isn't that just lovely...

I just got back from a "run". Run a block, can't breathe, think I'm going to puke, walk a block, feel better, repeat. Finally turn around, come home, figure, at least I got in 2.5 miles. Check pedometer. 1.73 miles. ****! (I just typed four stars. You fill in the letters.) I even ate some sport beans and drank my entire bottle of water.
Worked last night, but it was mostly quiet, so I got several hours of (fitful) sleep. Hadn't heard from photo guy since Tues night, so wrote him an email, he wrote back, blah, blah, general info on what he's been up to, signed off with, "Stay in touch". Stay in touch?!? Fer cryin' out loud. How disappointing.
I am dripping sweat, and it's supposedly only 78 degrees out. I can't run more than a block without panting and wanting to puke. Is it the extraordinarily expensive Enell bra that feels like it's crushing my ribs and impinging on my gastric sphincter (will that word be censored?)
Tomorrow I'll run before work, when it's cool, my favorite time to run. Then I'll ride to work, and, since it looks like I won't be going on a date, I'll go for a ride after work. That's truly something to look forward to.
Now I'm going to shower, take a nap, and ride my bike to volleyball in three hours. Thanks for letting me whine here.
