I have to go to work right now.
You will get into grad school
Nanci - Alright Addy! Hope she continues to eat like a good little girl.
Knot - Good for you on grad school. I understand how your kind of job can get hard on your body over the years. Of course, you have some good reasons to keep that body in top condition. (ya know, um, like for riding that beautiful Flossie  ;)) I've been kicking around the idea of going back to school for a little more torture as well. Hopefully next fall. I've started the whole process and many days I sit here thinking, "What am I getting myself into again?" All the stress is worth it if it's truly what you want to do. (and it is a lot of stress, isn't it? phew.) I'd tell ya good luck, but you've got it covered with pure talent and intelligence.
Edit: just read your post on XPITA. What a *****! Hey, while I'm in the area, if ya need someone to go over there and **mumble, mumble** her up a bit, just say the word. ;) Gosh, I bet you're glad you are rid of someone like her and have moved onto a much better life. Night and day. Maybe you have a copy somewhere else? Did ya need it for anything over the years? *fingers crossed*
As for OTG- Yup, I can attest that her pants are definitely falling off and she looks fantastic! (wait, um, er... shoot, you know what I mean :o) Anyway, when are we heading up to Penn State main campus? I need a tour from a pro. I only go up for FB games. That won't be my campus, but it's a good excuse to go hang out together. Any good riding up there? We'll take a bike tour.
Lise - Glad the migraine is gone. I'm very lucky in that I rarely get headaches, maybe once every few months and they are mild. I have a best friend who gets migraines and I go over and take care of her. Just devastates her. So hard to see her go through that. So yeah, I can't even imagine how BMo3 gets through hers. ((((BMo3))))
You and J are soooo adorable. Keep the stories coming, some of us need it. :)
Kit - I hope the package arrives ok and you, H and Miz Cakes like what I sent. From one sis to another, xoxo. (thanks for all of the support, really meant a lot)
BMo3 - Hope you're having a good day. I'm gonna check the calendar at work today and see about giving myself a 3 day w/e before xmas. I have a paid personal day coming, may as well put it to good use before it expires. I am getting there. (ocean) Sorry, I think I was overly tired last night. I crashed as soon as we were done. Slept 8 hours for once, instead of 5. I feel a bit more alive today. Seriously, thanks for helping me out of my funk over recent tragic events. If you're up to it, I'd like to have that little chat tonight.
Trek - I'd like to talk to you about the Cinderella ride sometime. I've been searching old threads but no luck. Still thinking of coming out with AG for it. (yes Kit, then heading up the coast :D) I was gonna do my vacation late April, but would move it up for the cindy ride. Anywho, I have no idea what to expect. Terrain, weather, needed gear... and of course, the most important aspect, what to wear. (Nope, no clowns BMo3, I promise. Although I'm a cute one, not a mean one - and I can juggle too. Even have a unicycle hanging in the garage. Probably break my arse on it these days tho. :D)
Well, enjoy the day everyone and be safe. Gotta go dig out my parka and wooly undies now.
X.
KITSUNE, fellow Sagittarius (it all makes sense now)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I think Jeff Bridges shares this day for a bday
It's also Walt Disney's birthday today! I celebrate it every year. :o :D
The chickie at GRE suggested I ask my undergrad school if they have copies. I don't think I had them sent, because I had graduated already when I took the GRE. It wouldn't hurt to ask. But I also doubt they kept them this long.
I surfed over to the admissions website again. The library school doesn't care how old your scores are, but they have to have official copies sent from the testing service. Since those are only held 5 years, I might've been toast anyway. I don't think my old paper copy would've counted.
It might have been shredded for nothing. (ha!)
I will now order new running shoes and maybe new running pants, have a wonderful vacation and happy holidays, then knuckle down and train for my tri and study for my GRE and get everything ready to apply next year.
Sigh.
Knot - yikes girl! But what a positive outlook you have on the whole situation. Enjoy the shoes and tights and we'll keep our fingers crossed a copy shows up for you.
OTG & Trek - don't say such things! You guys pray my car holds up for two more days. I told the guy yesterday he was getting it if I had to push, pull or drag it there:D OTG, (that comma was just for you, btw!) keep your chin up and resist the urge to b*&*& slap someone.
Kit, sounds like good bday plans. Enjoy the day little sista!
Nanci, glad to hear Addy ate - yippee!
Lise, yuck on the migraine. Hope you're feeling better. If you'll be around tonight I'd like to try and chat. I won't be available until after 9 so let me know if that would work.
BMo3, love your tree! We're gonna go pick one up tonight hopefully. Have fun running in the cool weather.
Mimi, are we any busier at work this week?:p Our owner came in this week and fiddled with the furnace and now it's not working. This guy needs a hobby (like retirement) but what can you do when he owns the place?? Now we are all freezing our a$$es off:mad:
boy, that's what i was thinking!
yes, we are testing this week. not at my desk looking out the window today.
I have a thermometer at my desk all the time so i can call in when it gets cold.
and I know when it gets cold because of the thermometer. otherwise
I get shrugged off because i am a female.
I really want to meet my bike goal. I have about 90 miles to go by the end of the year! I need to bike in the basement almost every night! eeek.
Quickly--
Knot--I had to retake the GREs; my program required scores <3 yr old. Your ex-PITA is such a JERK!!! What a moron. Anyhoo, when I retook them, I did even better. It will all work out.
Dar--I can probably talk tonight around 9:30. Work for you? L.
What is a GRE and I'm sorry you don't have it. That's stupid to EVER purge them.
Nanci
Graduate Record Exams. Kinda the gold standard hoop for students to jump through for most grad schools regardless of subject. (kinda like the SAT for undergrads)
<quiet little hopeful voice> The U.W. still has my GRE scores in my undergrad file! And they are official! Now I'm waiting from a call from the library school to tell me if they will accept such old scores. <end quiet voice>
HOT DOGGIES!!!! I was sure those puppies would be long gone, but the student records office still has 'em! Thank you everyone who suggested I call student records!
I like my high-90's percentile scores... they are my friends, and I still got 'em in the magical electronic world of student records!
Now the library school just has to accept them...
Knot-riding-the-roller-coaster-of-life
Knot, so sorry. That's awful. You study hard again and I bet you'll beat your score, too.
X, I can see if I remember my old bike route, but definitely not until the spring. Penn State is where I got hit by a car. I was coming home from the Collegian on Beaver Avenue, a two-lane road. I was ripping it at 35-40 mph and keeping up with traffic. I had taken the entire lane. A car on a cross street wanted to go straight and didn't see me. Plowed into the driver's side of the car and flew over it. I don't want to bike that road again.
It is pretty bike out there -- lots of cows. And Long Island iced teas afterwards.
In other news...
I'm picking up my orthotics at lunch today. First there was a big goof-up with the insurance coverage. Then they had said they'd come in the week of the 20th, but they didn't because of Thanksgiving. Then they said they'd call when they came in. I called yesterday, and they had in fact come in last week, but they never called. I asked if I could pick them up in the morning, but the lady said she couldn't tell what days they'd be open before 8. Why oh why are doctors' offices so completely incompetent?
I know I said I didn't care about my weigh-in, but I am getting a bit nervous. We'll see.
Knot, what luck. I hope they'll take them!
I just PMd you about this. I should read before writing. I do so hope they accept them. Whe I wanted to go back for a 2nd masters, I was told my scores were too old. They needed to be within 5 years. I have no idea if that is a universal standard or not.
Upside, being a non-tradition student and me being semi-hysterical at the grad school office, they were willing to find me a GRE testing facility asap, so I could apply.
After that rollercoaster (try finding 3 professional refverences when you are a SAHM), we ended up moving. Now my scores are too "old again. At least for here.
Wishing you far greater successful and peace.
Knot - Hopefully, they will take your old scores! If not, you'll do way better the second time!
Nanci: Glad Addy is eating. When does a snake like her have to eat again?
Xray: I pm'd you re Cindarella - you should do it. I'm thinking about traveling out to ride it
You probably know this, but Dave Zabriske (prob sp wrong) has a corgi named Chloe!
Nanci
Adult snakes are fed every 10-14 days.
Young snakes are fed weekly.
Very young snakes are fed every 5 days.
I think I'm going to aim for every 5 days for Addy until she has regained the weight she lost. Also, she can voluntarily swallow a much bigger item than what I can put in her mouth- so I will feed more, smaller until she learns to eat by herself.
Nanci
i have to ask. Why do snakes have to learn to eat by themselves?
even turkeys can eat on their own!
Very soon, I'm going to know more about snakes than I ever thought I needed to know!
Thanks Nanci.
Mimi, she has to learn to eat an unnatural prey. In the wild (Addy is wild-caught) she would be eating frogs and toads and maybe lizards. I don't want to feed her those- they carry parasites and are an unguaranteeable food source. I have to get her to switch to mice. Same thing with a lot of other pet snakes hatched in captivity like kingsnakes- they normally would be eating other snakes, so you have to sometimes help the babies learn that they will be eating mice. Snake breeders optimally have babies feeding on unscented (with lizard or toad) mice when they are sold. If the babies have not been fed, or have refused to eat for the breeder, they are often sold very, very cheaply or given away. Take tri-color hognoses like Zee for instance. A fresh-hatched baby that hasn't been offered a meal costs $100. A baby that feeds on unscented mice costs $350. Hatchlings that eat toads, or mice scented with toads, cost somewhere in between.
Nanci
You're dedicated Nanci - that sounds like a lot of work to me. I like feeding my dogs dry dogfood:D
Can't leave your dogs home for the weekend! And I bet they'd be _really_ upset if you were a couple days late with a feeding...
Nanci
I can for the weekend because I have good neighbors but you got me on the last one:D So how did you get interested in snakes? How long have you had them as pets?
I just heard our neighboring county doesn't have the funds to keep their Humane Society open. They will have to close next month unless they get funds and put down 80 dogs and cats:( Now that's sad.....
GRE SCORES ARE GOOOOOOOD!!!!
Yes yes yes! I talked to 2 different people in graduate admissions, and they both said my old scores were still good!
So, my score report getting shredded, and my scores being purged after 5 years from the testing center, didn't hurt anything!
Now I gotta do the app! OmiGAWD!
(no new running pants, sigh. gotta pay the admissions filing fee!)
All Right Knot - Congrats one step closer!
Dar, I have been interested in snakes for as long as I can remember. My daughter, too. I have a picture of her sitting on a potty chair, camping, holding a snake high above her head with both hands. She wouldn't put it down for anything. Interested in snakes means not being able to walk past snake habitat and not look for one. Jumping off my bike to capture one at every opportunity. Riding my MTB for a mile through the woods dangling a big snake to show my friends. I was under control till I found Maizey in my yard a year ago July. And still pretty under control until a friend gave me Choco in September. Then I went shopping for Inez, and the same friend gave me Addy, then I got Zee for my birthday- now I want more! I think just one or two or three more, though. I don't really want to keep them in tubs in racks- I like the natural, pretty vivs.
Yay Knot!!!!!! :D :D :D
Hey Nanci,
tarantulas eat only every couple of weeks too- and likes snakes are very clean and quiet pets as well. They are fascinating to watch the things they do. Gave mine up a few years ago. Now they live at Cornell. :p I stick with cats these days, it makes my life easier to be tank-less. ;)
There's a snake in the Photo Gallery of the snake forum named Snapdragon right now...
Yay, Knot!! I am SO glad for you. Good luck with getting the rest of your application finished.
My chicken crockpot stew is smelling good - the potatoes are a bit mushy though. Last time I did potatoes in a beef stew, they were quite firm when it came time to eat. Not sure why they aren't this time... Oh well. :)
We told everyone at work that we're getting married and they were all excited for us. So much fun....:D
Drove by the Mutual Fish Market on Rainier avenue on my way home tonight and a big sign in front of the store proclaimed "BIG fresh crabs for sale" So tonight I am having Dungeness crab. One of the best things to eat in the entire world!
(and potatoes and fresh broccoli)
I'm still excited for you and your Romeo! :p
A good cook once told me that yellow potatoes (with the thin smooth skin) stay firmer and hold their shape better when cooked in a stew or soup...that baking potatoes (big, with the brown skin) are starchier and fall apart more. I never compared them, just reporting what I was told.
My DH has has a terrible cough and cold lately. This morning I threw all kinds of veggies in the crock pot with some veg stock, and it was a good hearty veggie stew this evening. I used a small eggplant, a butternut squash, an onion, a turnip, broccolli, summer squash, white beans, garlic. I browned the onions, garlic, and eggplant first in a skillet with olive oil, then threw it all together and cooked low for 5 hours.
Ya know, I was running late all day, got hammered at work all night, left very late after a nasty OR case, almost got plowed by a semi on my way home from work (his fault)... thinkin' WTF else? Pulled into the driveway and there stands a skunk! Sh*t! So, I waited him out by taking a short drive around the neighborhood and looked at everyones xmas lights. (I like the white ones the best I think.) Ok, he's gone so I go home finally, take care of some stuff and think if it gets any worse, I'm gonna drink myself into a comma. (that's about 2 drinks for me. :o) Well, I came here first cuz you ladies always cheer me up. Voila!! Just what the doctor ordered...
Woohoo, Knot!! Congrats on the GRE still being good. Welcome back to the world of being a broke college student! Can you do a lot of the classes online? I like the online stuff. Saves gas. And I don't really need the "campus experience" anymore, ya know.
KG - so cute, you two. I wish you both all the happiness you can handle.
Snap - you want me to do a drive by to see what kind of dog Floyd's got? I'll be just a few miles away on Sat when I'm at my aunt's house making cookies. Maybe I can snag a pic of the pooch. :p  :D
(((BMo3))) Talk to ya later.
Kit - I see ya got the package I sent. Ok, ok, I'm calling ya. Gimme a second... :D
See ya TD! Have a great night!
...if it gets any worse, I'm gonna drink myself into a comma.
X - is that anything like drinking yourself into an apostrophe?
I'm shocked (b/c the scale at the gym didn't show a loss), but I'm down 2.75 pounds. That brings me to 25.5 pounds lost so far. :D
Tomorrow night I have the heart rate testing with my trainer. My bike's already in my car, ready to go.
In the bad news (and a massive rant -- brace yourself) ...
My orthotics are a DISASTER. I asked for a pair to wear with dress shoes, knowing I'd use the same pair to wear with my cycling shoes. So, getting two pairs -- one for sneakers, one for dress shoes. The dress shoes orthotics ARE THE SAME WIDTH!!! I checked with them TWICE during the fitting to see if the dress shoe version would be slimmer so they could actually FIT in dress shoes.
So not only are they not even close to fitting in my dress shoes (professional office; I sometimes have meetings with the company's top executives), they are *so* wide they don't even fit in my cycling shoes. I paid an extra $175 to get the second pair, so hopefully they can fix it. The woman I spoke with just seemed completely oblivious to the fact that dress shoes are narrower than sneakers and didn't seem optimistic about getting them made any smaller. Hello!?!? Has she never had to wear dress shoes?
To make things even worse, every time I have to go to the podiatrist's office, I have to leave work early. So far my boss has been patient, but this will be the sixth time just for this doctor.
*sigh*
OTG - that really sucks. I don't know much abut orthotics but I can imagine the frustration. I can't believe they don't understand the difference between different kinds of shoes (maybe you should ask for some for your F-me shoes? ;) :p )
Congrats on the unexpected weight loss - 25+ lbs! Whoo hooo! I cannot believe how easily I can gain weight. I had 3-4 days of 1400-1600 calories and no exercise and I gained more than a pound. (Thinking of BMO and how she has to eat 2000+ calories a day. Sigh... I wish....)
Lisa - you're right about the potatoes - I've heard that before. I'm going to try them next time.
kelownagirl "X - is that anything like drinking yourself into an apostrophe?"
X be careful, all that drinking is hard on your semicolon   ;) :D
Sorry TE TD, could not resist.
