Originally I wanted to come down Laguna Canyon Road and then climb from PCH, but as you said...all of the festival traffic would be a nightmare. We had to tweak the route a little bit, but it should be good!Quote:

I'm coming! I'm coming!!!! I have a feeling I'm gonna be in pain ;) cause I haven't ridden much ... but I'm game!
Brandy, I need to get directions to the start. I can't leave here until 6:45am so the further west, the more likely I'll be a tad late

ps. with the whole train thing, it turns out it was a good thing I didn't go yesterday! Who was the other woman riding besides Ms. Pico???
Her name was Missy and voltman brought invited her and her dh. They are MS150 team leaders and she also teaches indoor cycling. I'm pretty sure that they'll be joining us on our ride next Sunday!Quote:

This sounds like such a great ride!!
I'm thinking positive that I'll be able to join all of you on the 30th. Work could get in the way, so keep good thoughts for me that it won't!
While we're doing positive thinking, can we also manifest some cooler weather ;) ?
Cheers,
Judy
YEAH Judy!!!!!
It will be so great to see you again!!!

I haven't been doing all the long rides you guys have. This will be my longest ride all year. Yesterday I planned on doing my Club's 58 miler but I've had a cold all week, didn't feel all that well and well the humidity was already affecting me so I opted for the short ride - 40 miles going to Huntington Beach. I thought good a short, flat ride, I'll be fine but problem with flat - the speed picks up. I rode with 2 friends and our average speed to Golden West (down PCH) was 23.5 mph! I felt good until we hit GW then all of a sudden, I cracked! Big time. Made it to the coffee shop and sat and waited out some thunder and rain and took off back home. At this point, I was toast and it was a struggle to get back to my car. I haven't felt this bad I think ever on a ride. The humidity, heat and my cold did me in. I laid on the grass for 2 hours, drinking Gatorade and trying to get rid of my headache. I was very dyhrated. All I wanted to do was go home, take a shower and lay down in the air conditioning but nooooo.... the lightning struck a transformer and I had no electricity. It wasn't a good day for me.
Anyway, Sunday I plan on riding easy - just want to get through the mileage and stay on the bike. If it's hot, need to take it easy. Wish me luck!
This was a tough weekend to ride Pam. For now the forecast for next weekend is calling for cooler temps, so I'm crossing my fingers that it sticks!
Heya Pam!
I haven't ridden a lot of long rides either so we can hold everyone up together! I did the metric in Ventura (55 miles - a bit short) but since then, my longest ride has been 35 so you are definately not alone. I'm starting to think the really long stuff is just not my thing... I love the metrics but anything longer than that just doesn't sound fun. I think that the only way I'll want to go longer is at an organized ride (as opposed to me just trying to get in a training ride).
Brandy and Caligurl know this, but I've been sorta job hunting so my training time is more limited than it was. I do plan on doing a 25 miler either tomorrow or Wednesday (our A/C has crashed so I am NOT missing the technician - I'll be at their mercy) and maybe a few short hill repeats one day... its been 112 so there is a very small window for me... don't have childcare until 9am... so maybe an hour or two in the morning OR if DH is home, maybe an hour or so after the sun goes down a bit... I will just keep plugging away and get as much in as I can! ;)
How 'bout this Pam... we'll hook bungies to each other and flip-flop our way up and down the hills! hee hee hee, sorry, that sounds pretty comical if you think about it ;)
No worries, they'll wait for us :p
Trac'
tracy.... i've never done a non-organized century... cuz i just don't have the.... willpower? or whatever the word is.... i use the sag stops as my movitation and it makes it easier (easier?) for me... at least mentally! cool breeze is good cuz there are a lot of rest stops... so a lot of little interim motivators!Quote:

however... that said... if YOU don't want to do a century... then don't... cuz riding one is a LOT mental... and if you aren't prepared mentally... then you probably won't do it... (for me... i have NO desire to do a double century... even though i've had people badgering me to do them... i don't doubt i could.. just like i have NO doubt whatsoever that you could complete a century... but i don't WANT to do one... so that means i most likely wouldn't finish... MENTAL!)
but please don't write off the century yet.. you have almost a month to change your mind and ride.. you's all are worrying way too early about cool breeze!

p.s. brandy has permanently banished me from all future TE rides! shes a big ole MEANIE!
That's me! :DQuote:

I am pretty sure I could do one even now under good circumstances. But, I'm exactly like you... those longer training rides are really tough for me. I do like that one w/the hills that I talk about though because once you get to the turn around point there isn't really a choice about finishing it up ;)
I'll be doing the ride on Sunday then if the weather cools off or I can bribe DH into watching the wild things so I can leave early one time I'll probably hit that 40 miler again too; other than that, its gonna be 10-35 milers.
Trac'
ps. I'm over-riding you Brandy; Caligurl can never be banished! ;)

Trac... I have to say before each of my centuries I rode no farther than 50 miles, OK maybe a metric here and there, but generally 40 miles or less and I have never had any trouble finishing a century. OK some I was more tired than others but I did it. Mental is the key. But I have an advantage over you - I have done centuries so I know what it's all about. First time is tough. I almost like the way I did mine - I had only planned on doing 75 but forgot to turn off to cut the ride short and accidently did the full century. OK about 80 miles in I was in tears for a short period and when I hit 100 on my odometer I stopped and looked for the sag wagon but since one did not come, I kept riding and the last 8 miles (the ride distance was 108 miles) was not all that bad. After I finish I felt really good.
I have no idea how I'm going to physically do on this ride but I'm just going to ride. If I get out there half way and don't feel good, oh well, I sag or turn around. No worries. This heat is really cutting into my riding time but hopefully Cool Breeze will come through and will have that wonderful, cool, usually overcast weather to ride in. That's a motivator as well.
I'm hoping Brandy will have a route slip for this Sunday and scheduled stops and we each ride to her own ability and regroup at the stops. I can hang on downhills and flats but am very slow on hills, especially with heat.
Hey now don't be bringing me in to this cat fight! :pQuote:

Pam.... I am having a really hard time envisioning you broken down in tears :p .... somehow I have an easier time 'hearing' you say "suck it up and get going" ;) Really, the only reason I will do anything other than the 100 is if there are other issues (heat/injury etc.).Quote:

After 50 miles my feet were burning and at 80 the pain made me cry (plus the fact I was riding alone and didn't know the heck where i was - I just know it was in literally the middle of nowhere!). I got off my bike, took off my shoes and just pondered my fate for awhile. This family of riders came by, offered me some encouragement and rode with me for a spell. That help lift my spirit, 3) I never intended to ride a century, at 100 I figured there was no reason to keep riding but darn there are no sag wagons at Tour de Tucson (something to remember).
I'm sortof with you - my plan is to do the century but if its hot or I don't feel well the metrics a nice ride as well. I've got nothing to prove although if Wayne comes along he won't let me quit - he'd push me forward. Although the last time he was on a road bike was the ride we did in May. He might easily be talked into the metric!.
One better...we'll have routeslips and maps :D Should make it easier for people to bail out if need be :)Quote:

Brandy when you have time could you post the start location. I need to send an email off to Connie and Wayne and some others to see if they are interested in joining.
I realize that there's no way to bail out of Santiago Canyon and that's why I put it earlier in the ride. I figured that it people wanted to skip the hilly bike path and the Newport Coast climb after going through Santiago Canyon, that they could simply take the San Diego Creek Trail back to Bonita Creek Park.Quote:

Pam...please don't worry about being left behind. I'm not in a hurry on this ride, and I'm not a fast climber.
Call me a whimp, but does anyone know what the weather will be like. I don't do well in the humidty. thanks ladies
ACG, I just checked weather.com for Trabuco Cyn and it shows a high of 89 with 62% humidity for Sunday. Still hot but definitely not as hot as this last week or so!
Okay...Tiff and I are working on the routeslip right now...I've never made one before, so you'll have to be kind. We're doing our best!
After coming through Santiago Canyon Road we'll be stopping for food at the corner of Glenn Ranch and Portola Parkway in Foothill Ranch and there are several options, hopefully something for everyone...
Wahoo's
Red Brick Pizza
Memphis BBQ
Blvd. Deli
Starbucks
... just curious... what is the approximate mileage at the point where we come out of Santiago Canyon?
T~
It's at the 28-29 mile mark, IIRC.Quote:

Going 30 miles without taking in substance and then planning on another 30 without a stop can cause a real bonk situation especially if out in the saddle for while (like 3, 4,5 6 hours). Hopefully during the century everyone plans on stopping at each sag to fuel. The sags are usually every 15 - 20 miles. Once you hit 75 - 80 miles and your system still has reserves your body will thank you. I plan on taking GU/Beans/Balance Bars and after the first hour will most likely try to GU or Bean every 30 - 45 minutes through-out the ride. I'm hoping to treat this ride just as I would the century and want to finish feeling good (if its not Africa hot out and I get dehydrated).
Just another thing to consider, if the weather doesn't break - be flexible with the ride. No sense riding inland, doing hills, when it's incredibly hot. Don't want a bunch of sick, dehydrated folks on your hands.
The nice thing is Cool Breeze generally is well cool when elsewhere it's hot. Heat does not have to be part of your training.
I plan on a stop at the top of Jamboree and Chapman/Santiago to regroup, refuel and refill water bottles at the mini-mart at the Chevron station before we begin the climbing on Santiago Canyon Road. It won't be a problem to stop before or after that planned stopped either...it all depends on what the group needs. I just wanted to make sure that there was an opportunity to stop and to get water before we head in.
After lunch if stops need to be made, that's not a problem either. On the BF ride we did last week, if anyone needed to stop at anytime, we all stopped. It was never an issue or problem with the group and everyone welcomed the short breaks.
BTW Pam...I see that BCI is doing Santiago Canyon Road on Sunday as well...looks like we'll be trailing them!
Please send me your email address if you would like a route slip. Just a warning, the beginning is a little bit confusing with regards to crossing Jamboree and entering the San Diego Creek Trail. I'm sure that we'll all be together at that point though and we can just make sure that there is a person leading who knows where they're going. :D Same goes for exiting the SD Creek Trail and then entering the Shady Canyon Path. I'm sure it will all be fine though!
Interesting that BCI is doing the Canyon on Sunday as well. Lately Sunday rides have been very sparse. Most folks don't like to get up and ride at 8other tahn July and August rides start at 9). And alot of folks have been opting for the Beach rides which are also offered when its hot. I would predict the group will be heading South not North.
Are you bringing slips to the ride on Sunday? If so, that's cool otherwise I'll have you email me one beforehand. I'm still waiting to see what the weather is like. I rode this evening and it was actually pleasant but there's a big difference in climbing hills at 7 pm when the sun is setting and the breeze comes up and 9:30 - 10am when the sun is getting high and there is no breeze.
Will be interesting to see who all shows up. Riding through the Canyon sometimes, more is better - more visible.
i rode (climbed) today after work... it was 112 and humid when i left.... i think sunday's temps will be a pleasant surprise!
brandy and tiff... you've put a LOT of work into planning this ride! i know we're all gonna have a BLAST!
Looks like they're going the same way that we are...
July 30 (Route Slip – SUN09)
Food stop: Diedrich’s - Mission Viejo, La Paz & Chrisanta
Medium: 32 miles, rolly - Portola, Irvine Bl, El Toro, Marguerite, Muirlands
Long: 40 miles, 2200’ Climb - Jamboree, Sanitago Cyn, Marguerite, Muirlands
Interestingly, I found this out when I googled the term "Starbucks Portola Glenn Ranch" because they had stopped there on one of their other rides...lol.
