Stuff we find on rides thread

Several times, I have come across the odd shoe on the side of the road. How does one shoe get there? Did the person not notice? Did they just run around with one shoe for the rest of the day?:confused:

Other than single shoes, we see bungie ties and some kind of white nylon ties that must come off of feed sacks or something (can't figure out why else there would be so many lying around the road in our area). I've almost gotten to the point where I don't automatically think, "akkk snake" when I see them -- almost;) Oh, and lots of road kill:(

Once riding my bike in the Lake Chabot area near castro valley in California, I was riding and a loose horse sans rider came running full tilt at me down the trail. Since I was a horse person, I got in front of him, waved him down and grabbed his reins to stop him. Do not do this at home if you do not know how!

A little while later, two people riding double came up on a horse to get the horse. I almost let him loose again and slapped him on the butt when they acted quite surly and never even thanked me for catching their horse! What is wrong with some people?:confused:

silly horse owners. I must say i'm impressed. I don't think anyone can outdo finding a horse!

Dead Armadillos! When the heck did they move to Missouri? For the past few years I've seen them all over the place. Never ever before!

I also found a crisp five dollar bill along with some empty McDonalds containers along the side of the road a couple of days ago when I stopped to take a break. No buildings or other people around.

On my century ride Sunday, I rode by an itty bitty kitten on the side of the state road! One of our team called ASPCA (I didn't know that at the time and called my DH to go get him!) Poor thing.

This afternoon's commute: one lone women's running shoe and what appeared to be the contents of a large bag of jumbo cotton balls. Seriously, cotton balls all in the grass on the side of the road.

Today I found a 20 dollar bill!!
I was riding the bike you see in my avatar with a coworker, coming back from a meeting, and he passed right by it, and I yelled WAIT! sure enough a folded up 20 dollar bill WAHOOO!

yesterday, just as we passed one of my favorite stores in Seattle, Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe, I noticed a tiny doll in the street. I told Raleighdon about it, and game as he always is; he went back to get it.
While he was circling, I saw a large american car with two happily gabbing women run RIGHT OVER this poor little doll.
Donald followed behind, snatched it and said "It's in great shape!" I found that hard to believe after watching a 1 ton car run over it.

When we got home, he finally handed it over to me, it was a lonely little scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. It's hat is what suffered the most, but, hey scarecrows are not known for their great garb, not usually. The second photo shows him searching for his friends.

What a cutey!! I'd say it's a lucky sign.

Maybe he can be penpals with Ruby and her little gang of ruffians! :)

Keep us posted if he ever finds his friends..... :o

DH and I found a tablet of blank police tickets by the side of the road.
On another trip we found a bunch of empty boxes of Levitra (ED supplements).

Last month I found a honking big Dewalt cordless drill. If anybody has a charger, I could use it. :p

I have found in the last year;
a cordless drill ( turned in to the constabulary )
2 bikes ( also turned in )
a handful of bungees ( kept )
a pair of tinsnips ( returned to owner )
a ballcap ( kept, washed, and appreciated )
a truck wrench ( given to a friend )

thanks for rejuvenating this thread. Recently I found SAND!!
EVERYWHERE SAND! and pieces of car tire chains. :eek::eek::eek:

I wasn't on a bike at the time (I was walking) when I came across bags and bags of Chinese finger puzzles.... I still have a few of them kicking around the house.

I'm new, so they are all new to me. Expect lots of bumps!

Sand? I hope it wasn't too awful.

Immediately next to where I live, the heathland starts and when riding along there last week, noticed a pair of men's jeans............the mind boggles as to why, how and what was he wearing when he left! :eek:

Not sure if this counts, about 5 years ago, one Sunday morning I looked out of my kitchen window, to discover somebody had dumped an old skanky mattress on the TOP of my little car, the poor old aerial was all squished underneath! :mad:

One phone call and the local Council removed it, almost immediately.

This morning as the sun was coming up, a big wave crashed sending a beautiful seaspray in the air about 3 feet above my head (riding on the 101 freeway along the pacific ocean, in semi darkness) In my gazing at it in awe, I found something sharp that gave me a flat. When I walked to the off ramp to fix it, I found a commercial type cooks apron. DH uses those to work on the bike. It came home under my jacket after I fixed the flat! Tokie

Now you guys have got a lot to answer for, especially Biciclista's story of the small doll. ;)

I seem to be scouring the road for what might be laying about.

Well, yesterday when I went out for my 12 mile ride in the pouring rain and wind, I noticed little NoBody.

I keep seeing a bag of shop rags on the side of the road. The thin white towel type. I pedal on by, I don't need someone's possibly used shop towels. I wonder when the juvenile probation crew will be by? They usually keep this road nice and tidy.

I found a litter of kittens playing beside the road. When I stopped to investigate, some of them chased me. I could have stuffed 3 of them in my bike jersey, but the husband nixed that idea.

I bet that fetches a lot of money on the black market. Of course that is illegal. :p

I think Natasha said the boxes of Levitra were empty. More's the pity. :p

I never see anything good. Occasional wrappers from candy, road debris left over from winter, and dead animals. I guess people around here are too conservation minded and don't throw stuff out of the window.
The only time we found something was when we had to pull over on the sidewalk for my husband to adjust something on his bike. It might have even been on a walk, I can't remember. Anyway, we found a wallet. So we got home and searched the woman on Google. She had moved from the address on her license, but she still lived in Boston. When Steve called her, she was so happy; she was leaving the next day on a business trip to Europe and had no ID, so she drove out here to get the wallet. I think when she saw my husband, she thought she might get a date, but then I came to the door...
She had stopped to fix a flat and her wallet dropped out of her jersey. She rewarded our honesty by giving us a gift card to Starbucks.

This wasn't on a ride, it was on a hike, but it was a weird thing to find. My friend and I found a busted-up printer or copier (don't remember for sure which it was) along the Midstate Trail in Rutland this summer. It wasn't that close to a road either (that we knew of anyway). Pretty random.

what, you don't take your printer/copier with you when you go hiking?? good thing you found one, then :p

i found a wallet once, forget where. managed to track down the owner, a woman from the middle east, recent immigrant, who barely spoke norwegian and no english. arranged to meet at a central spot, was met by her husband, heavily bearded and in traditional i.e. non-western clothing.

he spoke flawless queens english and presented me with an excellent, very old french cheese, brought back from their latest trip to paris. that had me chuckling the whole day.

A great bike light and a small velcro pig that hangs out on my handle bars now!

Wow, I love that story!

Some town dumps (like ours) require you to pay a small disposal/recycling fee when you bring them computer components to dispose of. That's why I saw a big computer monitor thrown over the steep side of a dirt road way out in the country last year, on one of my favorite rural rides. :( I bet that's why that printer got dumped.

I have a similar experience to LPH's . Actually I've found 3 wallets while cycling... all three I managed to track down and return to the owners. One had been left on a car roof after the owner bought gas, and two had been stolen.

The story of one of the stolen ones was quite similar to LPH's. It obviously belonged to an older man - there were medicare cards and other things in there, but most of the the things inside indicated that the person was either from out of town or had moved here recently. I called some of the numbers I found in the wallet and managed to get the boyfriend of the man's daughter, who called him. The couple was still in the store where the wallet had been taken and I probably found it before they even realized it was missing. The person who took it probably just removed the cash then tossed it out of their car window a few blocks from the store. The couple was very sweet - only a little English, but they wished me a merry christmas and I think the woman gave me a hug, even though I was still in my wet cycling clothes.
