Not sure I know anyone in my age group--I'm 54--so I figured I would register for mixed age.
I'm going to try and get registered. I was hoping by now it would be open. I'm just off work and on my way to the gym, so could completely miss it!? But if I can, I'll get in. I'm thinking that if I don't get registered for Danskin, I'll probably sign up for the Coeur d'alene tri the following weekend instead. It's an olympic I believe, but is supposed to be a beautiful route. Their website is not yet updated for 2008 though.
So, I'm 41 and will likely register age group. Anyone else fit there?
Hi all,
I've read through some of the threads and was sucked in.
I have recently joined weight watchers...and just left a meeting...total weight loss now at 11.2 lbs....about 25-30 more to go. I needed something else to focus on besides lbs...so I've decided to register for the Danskin. (whenever it finally opens). It will be my first triathlon. I have done a few 5Ks...and one day (75miles) of the MS150 years ago. I've never been much of a swimmer though. I plan to take some swim lessons at my gym. I just hope that I'm not going to get too discouraged with the training... I willing to train hard..and know that it will be super rewarding.
So...here I am. I appreciate any insight that you might have :)
Geez...can they just open the registration??
Hi MelanieTris :D
Are you in WA? I think you picked a wonderful goal and it'll both help you with weight loss and in having fun. It also sounds like you have it pretty well planned out. My only bit of advice is to not wait until the last minute with the swimming :o My first tri was last year and I figured "oh, I can swim and it's only 1/2 mile...". HUGE mistake! Also, practice some open water swimming when the weather permits. While the run is only a 5k in a sprint tri, THAT is a whole other beastie also. There is a new and special pain that presents itself when you run in a tri. Do some practice "bricks" which is riding then immediately running after.
The Danskin and the Subaru, which is in Sept, are both very supportive. You will see people in all stages of shape. You just go in as prepared as you can be and remember to have fun! Many people are on older, heavy bikes and also many people walk the run portion.
Nice to meet you :D
Do they do any Danskin Tris in Canada?
I found a women's only one in Strathmore, Alberta in early August. The local tri I want to do is on August 17th so I'm not sure I want to do two a week apart... It would be nice to do a women's only tri though, and this one is held in a pool!
KG - no, the Danskin womens' triathlon series has only US locations:

Tie..
Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I am in Seattle. I think I'm becoming a little obsessed checking the Danskin website for registration. It's almost like I don't want to leave the house. Ha! I'm a member at Seattle Athletic club and they have a pretty strong swim program, so I'm hoping to arrange a lesson in the next week or two ...at least to just get an assessment of what I need to work on the start with. I've been looking into some of the training programs... Mary Meyers? Are there any that you suggest? Sounds like I'm going to be spending some $$$ getting prepared for this. I don't know what kind of clothes/ gear to buy...or what sequence the events are in...is it swim...bike...then run? That might be a stupid question. I recently invested in a new pair of running shoes as well as bike shoes with cleat/clips...I guess that's a start.
Hi, Melanie. I don't know anything about the inner workings of tris yet, either, but I figure we'll find out.
Can someone tell us a little more about the Subaru tri?
I'm planning to register age-group, but I will probably be in one of the first waves right after the Elites with Team Survivor. Who knew cancer came with perks?;)
MT - it really doesn't cost extra $$ to do a tri. The only stuff I had to buy when I did Danskin a couple years ago was a pair of goggles. I bought my own wetsuit, mostly just because I wanted one. Everything else, I just used what I already had. I swam in my bra and compression shorts. Put on a commuter skort and tank top for the bike (on my upright hybrid with rack and fenders), changed to my sandals and added a baseball hat for the walk. Don't let the $$ idea stop you! You can spend as much or as little as you want.
Oh, and a friend of mine did some training with Luna Chix, I think it was free.
And if you go to one of the First Time Tri events at Nordstroms or REI you can purchase one of their reserved blocks of race entries, even if the race has sold out.
Edit: I am just waaaaaay to anxious about getting in this year. I've checked the darn site like 4 times in the last 2 hours!
I'm also obsessed with checking that darn site! Thought for sure it was opening today. I guess tomorrow's a new day of checking, checking again, and again....!!!!
Melanie: WELCOME!!! I did my first sprint tri last summer -- it can be overwhelming with all the stuff out there... but Knot is right. You don't HAVE to buy much at all. Just see what is most comfortable for you, and stick with it.
I found this site to be the most helpful of anything in preparing -- I just read thread after thread of conversations -- most of the time someone has already asked / discussed what you are worried about! Also, go to the bookstore.. there's some great basic info out there to give you an idea what to expect and some good training guides... just calms the nerves.:o
Here's to an open registration tomorrow!
MelanieTris, I'm in Seattle also. Honestly, you only NEED what you have now. You might gain some more things in the whole experience but you can complete the race as you are now. I have some books you that you could either borrow/keep if it helps.
Knot, me too. Alas. I keep CHECKING the darned thing. It needs to just be released for registration.
Salsa, the Subaru is fantastic! It's a bit lower key than the Danskin, I think. I've never done the Danskin though, in their defense. The course is good for spectators. The swim is a bit longer than the Danskin, the bike course is incredible, and the run is a bit longer than usual but they supported it well. I would do it again in a heartbeat though I'm already signed up for a 10K on the same date. It's a good race though and we can extol its virtues tomorrow easily.
jesvetmd, no kidding. It needs to OPEN!!! I look forward to training with/meeting you if the cursed thing allows us to actually register :)
Tiegyr: Me too... most of my friends think I'm crazy to do these things. Looking forward to meeting people who understand and agree!
Sounds like you and I may have similar working schedules... you work nights? Weekends and overnights are my thing. Doesn't leave much time open to train with others for anything!
click.... click..... click........

Hey, Salsa, can we check registration from the smoothie party? ;)
Y'know those psych studies they did with rats and cocaine? They gave the rat a button to click. Sometimes when the rat clicked the button, he got a little cocaine. The rat would click the button rather than sleep, eat, or drink, just on the off chance he'd get a bit of cocaine.
I feel like that rat.

No kidding. I finally e-mailed them. I don't know if they'll answer or if they'll be forthcoming with a date but still...what if it's a month out? Can we DO this for a month? We'll go bonkers!
I spose it's bedtime. I will say that I CAN and WILL check this beastie whilst at work next week. I will, in fact, leave it up and will refresh it often during my work day.
I guess my question would be, how can we train for this if we're consistently paranoid about leaving the computer?!
I'm gonna focus on this: http://www.buduracing.com/events_detail.php?e=229
and on this: http://www.uswts.com/index.htm
and if I get into Danskin, I'll look at it as icing on the cake.
At least, that's what I'm trying to do.
.....click......click.......click
Ok, I took the bull by the proverbial horns. I am SO bad at just being patient so I e-mailed them. If they didn't want e-mail, then they shouldn't put their e-mail address on the website, right? So this is what I got in response, this morning:
Date has not been set, within the next week or two is anticipated. Your name has been added to our Seattle mailing list to receive notification.
Danskin Women's Triathlon Series
So read into that, we only have around 2 more weeks of insanity
Thanks for finding that out, you da babe!
I guess I can stop checking every hour now, eh?
At least they responded to your email fairly quickly.. that is surprising. Way to go on the asking. I still don't like the answer, though!
So I wonder if I also emailed them and asked politely about when they will register, would they add me to the notification list? Maybe I'll try, anyway. Ugh. It's hard to stop this insanity once started...
T., did you email Danskin or Timberline?
I feel like a totally nuts person about this.
I e-mailed Danskin. I am also impressed at how quickly they responded :D Salsa, go ahead and e-mail 'em also. They don't know you know me and besides, they DID open it a day earlier than scheduled last year. I think we've got a right to have a fighting chance to get in this thing.
Thanks Knot! I think, though, we should be just as obsessive. What if we let our guard down and they opened it EARLY?!
Jesvetmed, I do work kind of quirky hours sometimes. This spring (actually from tomorrow until late May or so) I'll be working days with a few exceptions. I know what it's like though. For the longest time all I wanted was a chance to socialize with people who have normal lives :D It'd be like "so, you're having a BBQ...could you maybe have it on a Wednesday or Thursday so I could go?!!" Do you do ER work? Regardless, I am sure we can all find times to train together sometimes. There's no doubt in my mind :D
Yep.. ER veterinarian. It's worth it though -- a week off a month all at once. And this is the second best week... 4 days in a row off. Almost none of it weekends, though! Yeah, haven't seen many of my friends in a long time! Funny how no one comes to the Wednesday night BBQ's!
I know I can find training time somewhere! So far it's working out.:)
fyi to all you TE triathletes: the Cascade Bicycle club's Bike Expo is scheduled for Sat/Sun, 3/8 and 3/9th and Sunday is being called 'special triathlon day', with presentations by Sally Edwards
Training for the Bike, by Sally Edwards
Sunday, March 9; 11:45
This 45 minute presentation is directed for all level of riders with a focus on women training to ride their best on the roads or in the races. Whether one is a first timer or seasoned cyclist, these are the tricks of the trade from a 30-year veteran, professional triathlete, and author. Learn about training, getting fitter and going further, and most of all, overcoming the barriers - speed or distance or fear - that hold you back.)
Sal is not only one of the founders of the sport of triathlon (and a Triathlon Hall of Fame inductee), but also, most of Sally's recent races have been performed in her role as the National Spokeswoman for the Danskin Triathlon Series. Sally has finished every Danskin Triathlon dead last, as the "Final Finisher," inspiring more than 200,000 other women to make it across the finish line in front of her.
There is also a presentation on swimming (10:30) and running (1:30), so it sounds like a great start for those of you planning your tri schedule...
Thanks, MM.
I emailed Danskin and just got an email back saying registration will open soon. They did not offer to add me to the email list SO I am still desperately dependent on Knot and/or Teigyr to call me on my cell phone if they see it open! Thanks, guys.
Since i'm awake when you kids are asleep..do you want me to check for you during your sleepy time? zzzzz...
Just a crazy thought..
CC, any help is appreciated :D Our obsession needs enabling.
For anyone that cares, it looks like they are updating the site. I haven't received anything yet but they've added some verbiage to the entry site and it looks kind of like they're gearing up for it. A bit. Not to get anyone excited or anything :p
Ack. Wish they'd get on with it!!!!!!!!!
gosh, and you guys were checking every 5 minutes on Saturday! you must have broken your keyboards/mice by now!
Can someone PM me when they open the registration? I'd like to do this one. So as I understand it, they should open it up within the next few weeks?
Any Seattle ladies have a recommendation where we can stay that's nearby? Hopefully near a good pub... :p
thanks teigyr. I appreciate it. This will be my first year for triathlon. Either PM or text msg would be great. I have my PM's emailed to me. Since my job can be pretty crazy busy (I xrayed 12 pts in the first 90 min this morning), this helps a lot. :D
No kidding. Very strategic. So much so that I believe that since we can "insure" that we will receive their e-mails regarding registration, that means we are entitled to something if we don't? I quote....
In order to insure that Danskin global emails including registration receipts can be received, you can add the following email addresses to your Internet Service Provider address/contact book and also contact your ISP and tell them to allow emails to be accepted from the following - info@timberlinetiming.com, noreply@timberlinetiming.com, bounce@timberlinetiming.com.
Yes, I am ready for this to be over.
so, what's the status on this, my TE tri-buddies?? Seems like it's taking forever...
Thank you for asking :D
Well. Starting this morning, if you go to the Danskin triathlon page, there is nothing. It's almost like an error message but it IS the page....so I went directly to the Timberline Timing page but there's no option to register yet.
I think it is nigh. I also hope it doesn't open on the ONE day I have plans or something like that. Does this qualify me to receive anti-anxiety medication?
Aackk!!!
I'm leaving town Sunday am for a conference for 4 days and nights! How can I effectively (obsessively ;)) be checking this website all day if I am sitting in a conference?
I'm so MAD this hasn't opened yet!
Is there anyone willing to text me when it opens so I can race out of the talks and find a computer?
Let me know if you are someone who has easy access to both computer and phone to text and I'll give you my info.
Any help would be SO appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Jes
