Hey elk,
Gorgeous bike. I was looking at the Aurora earlier this year and fell in love with it. It was on back order and I just could not wait.
I've totally got bike envy! Oh, well.
Enjoy! :)

I don't sweat very much when it's below 40. I also find if I wear mostly all wool it breathes a lot so after grinding up a long steep hill and getting overheated, I then zoom down the other side and am nice and cool again! :D
In general I find I do best when I wear extra wool layers on my legs, feet, hands, and neck, but I'll wear one layer less than what I am tempted to wear on my torso and arms- those places overheat more quickly. My hands, feet, neck, and legs get colder more quickly, so I really layer those parts up more. If those parts are nice and warm, then I stay warmer all over and can afford to wear more breathable stuff on my torso and arms. That works well for me.
tanks, coyote! So what did you end up with instead?
Did I mention that I also found a KOna Sutra? toooooolooong a reach for me; like the 520.
Wool. I'm wearing my Rivendell merino crew under a flannel shirt right now...I'm findin it easier on the skin than I did. But...drifting with Mimi...what and how do you layer that wool? Is it right next to your skin? What do you wear for wind and wet over it? If you wear a waterproof shell, does the wool still breathe?
How to dress, is the question, for riding in this wet above 32 climate of the NW?? give me some specific stuff to shop for...:D
oh and by the way...I am renouncING weeniedom...I have not renouncED. t's a long process...:D
Elk, did you go for a ride on your new bike?
I snuck a wee spin yesterday and it flattened me...I had to go back to bed!!
(After learning I need a longer seatpost...:D )
I will LOVE it though, I can tell...it felt so SOLID and how do I say this?....quiet. Like it knew exactly what it was doing...Quiet as in all the parts integrate perfectly....good build I guess, hung on steel...solid.
I'm HOPING I can get out to the handmade bike show for a LITTLE while...and maybe down the LBS to have them swap seatposts...
If you look at my seatpost (see below pic#2) and the one in the picture that Lisa sent of the loaded JA tourer (Pic #1)you can see she has hers way higher...and mine is already at the go-no-further-line.
Oh Elk, that second picture......:) :) !
I'm very happy that you were able to take a short voyage on your new bike. Sorry she put you back to bed, though. :( Hopefully you're on the tail end of the cold and you'll be back outside in no time. But don't push it, ok?
Note to self: I must follow my own advice.
Yes Elk, I see what you mean about comparing the photos of seatposts- clever of you to see that!
Your bike is just so beautiful. You, know, I kind of like the black bar tape and then the brown saddle. You could leave it just the way it is and it is gorgeous.
Feel better soon! :)
correct side...light not as good...just for the record..
note the hgher seatpost. I just traded with the globe...and I'm bidding on a salsa shaft..the Ritchey can go anywhere it wants...
oh dear, the poor Globe -- raided for parts already....
Karen in Boise, who's Expedition lost its pedals immediately, and then DH grabbed her wheels!
Elk, you really SHOULD get this one. So sexy. :p
wan't paying attention and lost the Salsa...oh well...it was too long any way...I need 350mm...
For a sick girl, you sure are busy! ;) :D
Elk, I LOOOVE your bike. That one is on my list for my "next one."
Here's me on my new road bike in my new ibex capris... (if i can't ride, i spend money on things to ride on, in, with:p )
what do you think of the fit of the bike? does it look like a good fit? feels pretty good!
I'm certainly no expert, but it looks great to me. The bike is beautiful and you certainly look like you are enjoying yourself. If you feel comfortable, that's the most important thing!
Great picture! Thanks for sharing.
You look comfortable- do you feel comfortable?
Two things-
Do you feel like your weight is nicely centered and not falling forward?
And do you have any aches or like numb hands or sore neck, etc?
Do you feel like you can get power behind your legs when pedaling?
Your riding posture looks very much like mine when I have my hands on my hoods too.
If all is well....then just enjoy!
Nice duds!!! :p :p :p
Elk, you look terrific on your new Jamis.:) I think your will have many super rides on your bike. I'd like a bike like yours-just a few sizes larger. I too enjoyed wearing my Ibex knickers today.
I have on my Lena skirt now over my leggings and my norgie crew on top and over that my new 9$ ebay red merino sweater and I feel SO AT HOME in these clothes!!!
I plan to follow yr advice, Lisa, and after setting the aurora up close to what is "correct" just ride for a few weeks. I am playing around with moving my weight from bar to saddle to pedals to distribute it evenly and I can feel just where I need to strengthen my muscles...
A year ago Thanksgiving...I quit smoking, and then I gained a bunch of weight....and got no excercise...
Today I am totally smoke free, have lost 15 lbs, and not only do I not have to FORCE myself to "go outside and play" I LOVE it!!!
:D
Elk, you look grand on that bike of yours. :)
Did you draw the picture of your collie?
Yay, Elk! You look fabulous!
(and very hearty congratulations on going a year without smoking!)
Yay from here as well! Elk- you have turned your life around!
Yeah, just ride for a few weeks to let your muscles start adapting. If you are not in pain don't worry about tweaking your bike for a while. The longer you ride the more obvious it will become as to what changes you might need to make. People tend to tweak their new bikes back and forth so frequently at first that they totally forget how the bike was set up to begin with, or which tweaks resulted in what differences for them.
Isn't it wonderful to have found a healthy exercise that seems like FUN rather than work? That's how I feel about it! :D :D :D
I lost 15 pounds too over the past 2 years of walking and biking....after a lifetime of non-exercise/non-sports.
You selected some really great wool pieces to get set up with. You'll get a LOT of mileage from those items you chose. :p
Wearing my snuggly wool tights and skyline zip top right now...... :p
thanks friends...it's fun to justify spending all this money on bikes and wool and leather....i just remind myself it used to be cigarette money...and probably would've ended up as health cost money!
I used to be all heady and broody and smokey...embraced psychic suffering for the sake of "depth"...and now I'm all clean and squeaky and just wanna ride my bike with my dog!!
Here's me and Maudie on the Other bike...which I still love. I'm singing Maudie's song to her...you can see she's listening...
(Sundial... that's a photo of my dog's great great grandfather, the great Ch Tartanside Heir Apparent)
I love that photo of you and Maudie, Elk! Congratulations on the "new you"!!! Great job! I know you feel fantastic!
The Globe is a Very Cool Bike, too!
Yeah...I love it...I just wish I could get as comfortable on that bike as I already feel on my Jamis!!! see my little ibex head on the pants...:D ...gosh I look like I have miniature legs!!! lengthwise anyway...:p
That Aurora is beautiful, elk. Congratulations!
I just decided that some time this winter I want a Jamis Commuter built up into an Xtracycle. I talked to the bike shop about it yesterday and they are excited to do it for me.
thta's exciting, xeney! every shop I talked to about possibly building "from scratch" was wild about the idea...I think the wrenches LIVE for such moments at work!
course now I have to figure out what an xtracycle is....is it a cycle with a little cycle behind?
Beautiful new bike & a hearty congrats on quitting smoking & improving your life so. You look wonderful & very happy.
Xtracycles are very cool:

Thanks! I LIKE that extracycle...maybe the Globe could become the dog bike all around...I could run Maudie and carry the 3 papillons!!!! CUUTE!
