Umm..:o I thought of this ride today because of the following sad news story
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599...2-1245,00.html
Oh dear!
C:o
That is sad and has got to be one of the freakiest accidents I've read about.
Roommate Amie and I just regestered for the full century
Will probably end up staying at a hotel up there the night before, so would be up for any pre-ride dinners etc.
Now to start training......
Ellen
Do you like margaritas?
Handed in your thesis ?
handed in the draft last Wed... got food poisoning that night... good timing, huh?!?
Now I am working on the defense talk. I have my defense next THursday, (get my revisions from my committee then, provided they have read it!), Graduation on Sunday (Family comes into town Wed night), Sponsor's meeting the next week, then the summer to finish up revisions and get the last 2 chapters submitted for publication (one is ready to go already).
So, I feel like the hardest part it done, getting it all on paper. Doing my practice talk on Thursday, so I will have most stuff done before the weekend.
Whew, I am ready to be done!
Will we have to call you Dr. Badger? :D
Congratulations!
It will be fun to see you on the ride!
hmmmm.... was trying to think of what to change my screen name to once I move to Texas in Oct since I will no longer be in Palo Alto (hense the PA in PABadger) Dr. Badger might work ;)
Sorry to hear about the 7 being in the shop already :(
Looking forward to the ride too!
E.
Where are people staying the night before? Amie and I need to get a hotel room as there is no way we are driving up from Palo Alto the day of and then riding 100 miles  Trying to figure out what town is best for finding a reasonably priced hotel.
Thanks!
E.
I would suggest looking in Petaluma.
If I'm able to ride, I'm staying in Petaluma - it's about a 20-30 minute drive to the start.
If any of you lucky enough to ride in this one could pick me up a t-shirt (size small), I'd be forever indebted. Of course, I'll pay for the shirt and shipping.
Will do !
Leebob and I are staying that Friday night at the Best Western Petaluma Inn.
Well, Amie and I just booked a room at the motel 6 in Petaluma... yup, we are big spenders! :-)
moo moo-eeeoww. Try again for another ride. signed up for 100mile
not sure where I will stay for now... looks like a fun ride.
smilingcat
No worries - I'll get the T-shirt first, then we can discuss the details.
I still have that card you sent me the last time, I get a chuckle every time I see it.
OK, one week and counting! What is the dinner plan for the night before? I don't know the area at all, so suggestions will be more than welcome!
E.
I can't recommend any place for dinner - since I usually solo'd it I stuck close to the hotel in the past. That means Applebee's.
But this might help:

Sorry I'm going to miss this, Holstein is my favorite ride.
There are quite a few good restaurants in Petaluma. I used to live there, and the number has grown since I moved, but some reliable favorites are Dempsey's Alehouse (not just brewpub grub!), the New Yorker Pizza (for the thin crust fans), Old Chicago Pizza (for the thick crust with 3 lbs of cheese fans) and Volpi's (pasta and they have a former speakeasy in the back).
Mooo.
In light of my AT's (see Marin Century thread if you really want to know) and overall laziness, plus the fact we have a houseguest, we're doing the metric only. I have to ride with DH and the butcher (my dermatologist/our riding friend who's super fast on the hills). Should be interesting. I have to ride the Grizzly Century with them in October as well. Oy!
Im doing the metric too so I might see you guys in a blur speeding past me.
Hmm I hoping all will be well at my house by then. I have two home sick and missing the first day back at school with stomach flu.:(
Hey bikerz are you still coming to this ride???
School started already?? Lucky you - except for the stomach flu part. :p
I will look for you. I think we're starting early, around 7. I want to get done early so I can spend time with my friend who's staying with us. The metric route is pretty flat/rollery til the very end, which does Wilson and Marshall, I believe. (We just did the metric route as a training/taper ride for DR). It's a fun route.
The 2 climbs are not bad at all. And the scenery is fantastic. As are the cows.

It'll be a little browner now.
Or Red Bull, dark chocolate, No-Doz ...
I'm doing the 100k too.
Oh, be prepared for a chilly start. Last year I was such a cold wimp I wore arm warmers, knee warmers, head band and long fingered gloves for most of the ride. And I'm bringing it all again this weekend. :o
Does anyone know anything about the century ride route?
Looks like I'm the only one who is going to do the century, but since I usually ride alone anyways, I don't mind.
I'm sure you all will keep LeeBob company on the metric. :)
jo - it looks like it is the same as the metric, except at the beginning where you go to Occidental at the beginning, and towards Petaluma in the middle. You'll still get to climb Marshall. :D I wonder if the century goes by the cheese place?
100 Mile Route: North to Bodega Bay, East to Occidental, South to Chileno Valley, East to Petaluma, West to Marshall, North to Tomales.
Approximately 5500 feet of climbing. Fee is $65.
67 Mile Route: North to Bodega, South to Chileno Valley, West to Marshall, North to Tomales.
Approximately 3500 feet of climbing. Fee is $65.
I did it in 2005, so my recollection is a little fuzzy. I have the map somewhere. 7000 feet of climbing per my BJ report, which has no detail.
It was Tomales - Dillon Beach - Valley Ford - Bay Hill (watch the descent - TERRIBLE pavement) - Coleman Valley - Occidental (skip the Occidental rest stop and stop at the Freestone Bakery on the way to Valley Ford) - loops of flat stuff between Petaluma and Valley Ford - Wilson Hill - Marshall Wall - Tomales. It's a great century route.
I think 7 or 7:30-ish for dinner would be a good time to shoot for since then we'd be able to hit the sack early. Would that be too early for you, though?
What about the rest of you (Kim, Ellen, Ann, Melissa, ??), and idea when you might arrive?
At least Petaluma is a bit shorter drive than Santa Rosa from the bay area, which is especially helpful on Friday evening. :p
Perhaps pizza would be quicker than the other options? Then we'd only have to decide between thick & thin crust.
Deanna, do you know offhand which pizza place has quicker service or anything else to recommend over the other?
Aha, so it does go up Coleman Valley - there was some discussion over on bikeforums about that and no-one knew if it went up Coleman or not.
Yeah, I should do the century, it'll be Good For Me.
all by lonesome, in the dark, and the cold, chased down by cows....
:D
