How many of you have named your bike?

I never thought about naming my bike until I saw this thread and wouldn't have had any idea about what to call it. But, I bought a new frame a couple of days ago and the name just came to me during the shopping process.

I had picked out a frame and my BF asked the LBS guy if it was a women's specific model. The LBS guy said no, why do you ask. BF replied, well it says chick right there on the tube. LBS guy laughed and said that's the model name... Chic.

Ever since then, I can't help but think of it as the Chick. Since my friend and I call each other the two cool chicks and it's a pretty cool looking frame, I thought my bike could be the 3rd Cool Chick.

Names that just kind of come up like that are usually the best ones. It may be a kind of a "chick thing" to accesorize to that point, :p but then boats get names too. And they're all women.

I like Ausgirls name for that lovely bike. Ciara. For me, it reminds of those amazing powerful lightfooted Tolkein fairies, who have all the qualities you could want in a great bike. It all sounds like it fits seamlessly and works for you, girl.

And kimba- Pipe Bomb is somebody elses bike, a twenty year old who can levitate it over street barriers like jumping a fine horse over a gate. It's taken. And in all honesty, the cops here might go nuts. most of them are good guys, but their sense of humor can get very worn down. And it's a cruiser so if I ran an errand and left it locked up some fool would call the bomb squad and blow her up!

Here's a name- Jezebel. Just came to me. Hhmmm...........

a six foot long blue bike that rides like a land yacht? It gets me there in comfort, not very fast, and has a big yellow bag for all my needs.

We named our sailboat, Overdue, because my husband was "overdue" for his own boat.

Maybe my daughter will come up with something. She names all the cars.:D She named my silver Impala the Silver Flash. Her sister's car is Lizzie. Her dad's truck is the White Wonder. I think she could come up with a name better than I could . I'll let you know. :D

Hey! I love that name too- and the fairy reference is totally appropriate!

I like Jezebel- but I think Elvira Mistress of the Dark is also totally cool and appropriate. I've been calling her that- and it fits!
AND- I went to a tint shop today- the guy there is a mountain biker too- he biked MOAB!! -so when he heard what I wanted the decals for he was really supportive. AND they can make up the decals in any size or font I want- I just have to choose the gothic type font I want and there it is- right on my top tube! Great eh? Price is really reasonable to- 10 bucks CDN for both sides. I just have to figure where I want the Elvira- it's got to be on there somewhere- maybe on her "creamy white bosom"-
remember- she has that cream coloured section?

I thought the Pipe Bomb name was just really ironic for your cruiser bike! It would be completely turned around, y'know?

Also- I don't think we in Canada are quite as uh..."gun shy" about that kind of stuff- I'm sure the cops here would care less. But then- we don't have the same terrorist concerns here. Strange but true. I remember pulling a water pistol on a couple of friends in LA- I thought they were gonna have heart attacks- but then- their point of reference is so different. They've seen shootings in clubs , drive bys etc. Here- it's just starting to happen in Toronto...

Thanks for the compliments on the name. Ciara is celtic and it means dark and mysterious. She's not dark, but a little mysterious as she is the only bike of that brand in our club.

Pipe bomb is a cool name. I don't think anyone here would really react to it either - they might just laugh and ask how it got that name!

Jezebel - lovely name, but it has very sexual conotations - things that make me wonder what sort of bike would be right for that name!

Elvira - does the bike have much black on her?

Yes- she is almost entirely black- with red detailing- if my stupid computer would see my D Drive I could post pictures on my website...

She is black - the head tube has some cream on it just above the black shocks. The name Schwinn and Mesa is in red or white lettering...all the components are black- ditto handlebars, stem, ahead,cranks and pedals.The grips are black with red rings on the ends.
The wheelset has red rims with black spokes and black hubs. I put these cool blood red water bottle holders on her- and there is a red THE front fender - which I might change to black.
Black saddle- I had to get a new seatpost, it'll be black as well...

I think Elvira just fits. I'm not the cool and sexy type so I think Jezebel just doesn't fit.
She would be cool as a black widow as well...

I was watching American Chopper when I started putting her togther- I was bidding on a red and black MOAB frame that I just loved.(For those OCC fans it was gonna be my "Fire bike".) Missed out on that one- but was able to pick up the Schwinn Mesa GSX for a song...so she is my second choice but-I think she is still pretty striking...

I had a lot of fun though- it took me from July to Dec to acquire all the parts for Ted. Elvira didn't take as long- because she is an 8 speed- I'll be upgrading her to a 9 speed through out the summer. Which means she may have to sacrifice her red rims- I'm not sure- I think it's just an 8 spd hub...

Here in USA we've had trouble with right wing holy roller KKK types- skinheads- actually blowing things up with pipe bombs. And the cops have found psycho kids building them to blow up their high schools. Five years ago, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb was a good twit to the parents about BMX/ skateboard/ body peircing youth culture. Now it's a real worry- white American terrorists love them. You don't hear about it as much, but it still makes folks nervous. so, why paint it on your bike? The world is full of smartaleck bike names.

Jezebel was a great queen in ancient times- the bible calls her the evil ***** of Babylon. That's why you're thinking sex. I could bore you with womens studies and ancient cultural history- but Jezebel was a Mae West or Elvira type girl herself who got a lot of bad press. As well as a melodramatic Betty Davis movie about a goofy Southern Belle stereotype. And I was thinking of it for my Redline, Kimba. I knew your ride was already Elvira! :D
I still have time to think though; I need to change the cranks on that bike. 180mm! Who can ride those after age 25?

Mine's called Abbey short for Abbey Road (Beatles album). She's black and yellow and kind of looks like Daffy Duck but I just couldn't name her Daffy she's way to classy :D

My Terry Col de La Madeleine is "Ruby Sojourner". My old MTB was "Reality"; her replacement is "Virtual Reality", VR for short. My old road bike was "Fantasy" and my workhorse commuter is "Little Pony" because she has two 24" wheels.

My first road bike, a blue Bianchi w/that Bianchi green lettering: Chip, after the green being like mint-chip ice cream.
My new Orbea (a lovely blue Spainiard!): Silver (it's so light, when I first saw it, I thought, "Hi ho, Silver, Aw-w-ay!") It'll do until something else comes along...
A friend has an Orbea and we first called it Pepe, the name I called her ex-husband who finally paid her the $$ he owed her so she could buy a bike. Now that she's a real roadie, she changed her bike's name. I just can't remember the new name.

Oh those Orbeas are some of the most beautiful bikes in the world! My LBS owner has just bought one for himself and it is practically a work of art and is this gorgeous silver colour. :) I don't discriminate though - I've also seen a Colnago c-40, a peugeot and a pinarello prince (drool!) that I also consider to be works of art!

Road Bike: '90 -something Allez Steel Frame with down tube shifters..."my little piece-o-lead".... she love it when I call her that!
New Road Giant Carbon: Verdict is still out. (I am still waiting for my local shop to get it in) but I an open to suggestions. Something tells me I have to ride it to know wethet its a he or she.

HI- first post here, though i love the site!

I had to laugh when i saw this thread since plenty of people have made fun of me for naming my bike. Mostly its the triathlon folks cause the cycling team people ALWAYS named their bikes. Anyway, mine have been:

1) My first racing bike: Fiets (Dutch for bike)

2) My '98 Trek: Carsten Fermin Niklas Alessandro- or just Carsten :P Hes black and gold with some blue accents and a very pretty bike, but I wanted a strong German/Northern European name for him, and when i first picked him up I had just heard the name Carsten from somewhere. Then I added a few names as weve gone along- two are for exbfs :P

Somehow having named my bike makes me feel like im "part" of it- after climbing a big hill he gets a pat (yes i know hes not a horse but still!) or when he needs a clean sometimes I talk to him. But Carsten has always taken care of me and never flatted in a bad spot, though we had a few tempermental issues with falling over in the middle of intersections on that first year! :P

Looking to buy a new bike soon, and when i get him, well, we shall see what hes like and then name him accordingly!

So if you're giving your bike extra names that are former bfs, does that mean they were good influences in your bike's life? Carsten sounds very Norwegian. (Calm, quiet, not very emotional)
Never thought about talking to my steed as I'm riding. I've been sing or whistle to myself while riding and occassinally curse at the internal combustion engine, but never do I talk to the bike...is it therapy? :)
It seems like we're evenly divided 'tween male bike names and female bike names. WHo wants to do their master's thesis on that one??

I went out today on a club type ride- it was my first one...
at first it was nice and stressfree- then it got colder, windier, and the rain started.
Oh yeah-
and there were hills!
Big ones. Cresting the hill dead on into the wind was really tough. Everybody else had their hybrids- and I'm chuggin' with Ted up the hill- Ted being the name of my bike, for those who don't know.
And I'm not only talking to Ted- I'm cajoling him- urging him on up that freakin' hill...
and when 2 of the hills got the best of me- I'm walking up that damn grade, and I'm saying c'mon Ted- let's go...we're better than this...

I'm not talking to myself, mind you. I am talking to the bike...

well- we made it. The kicker is- it was only 15k- and it took and hour and a half. I was warm in my cycling jacket and tights- recent and very welcome additions to my cycling wardrobe!But my energy level was really poor-I shouldn't have been bonking- I ate before I went, had lots of water and energy drink.
Last weekend I came down with this strange malady- for a 48 hour period, I had no energy- none...no gas...I could barely lift my head.And then - out of nowhere I just felt stronger and stronger til I felt almost bad to normal... I think it's something going around but...
hopefully it's the tail end of that and the next ride I'll be stronger.

lol well the Niklas part, he was a pretty big jerk, thats one of his names ( was Danish) but I liked Niklas so I tacked it on to the bike name. And Alessandro I thought was good from the Italian bf because its an italian form of my name which is Alexa. And i never get around to saying the whole name anyway before I get weird looks.

Hmm talking to bike, sometimes its therapy when you are on a really horrible ride- like here where it gets really windy (oh the pain!) and you just want to yell because its so frustrating to feel as though you are standing still. Or climbing up a mountain/hill. Here in town the big hill ride is to go up Geiger Grade- the town record is still held by Greg LeMond. So when i hit that false summit sometimes its nice to talk to Carsten and say something like "well cmon Carsten, we can do this, one more hill then we can go home" But obviously you dont talk TOO loud, more under the breath!

Actually once i was racing at Chico State and they had this horrible road course that went through three miles of GRAVEL ( deep gravel too) - people were flatting all over the place, some more than once. I talked to Fiets the whole way though that- "ill get you some nice grease and give you a great clean if you dont flat on me!". And he didnt. Maybe its a superstitious thing!

Interesting that you should mention that- sometimes I get that same malady. Or i feel really hot and feverish and not much like eating and dead tired- flu-like but it isnt the flu. I think it has something to do with your body adjusting to new levels of athletic stress put on it. It seems as though i get it every few months ( ive been doing triathlon training for about 9 months now and the running part always gets me- i need wheels or water for this body!) but I just take my time, work through it, and tell my coach im a bit out of it and he lets me take it easy. Its just your body telling you that you need some rest!

MTB is old blue because when I got my road bike it became the old bike and is blue in color. The new road bike (not so new now) I have not realy named it yet. It's a trek 2200 bright yellow in color and looks fast but unfortunately I am slow on it. Flash comes to mind but again I am slow. As far as talking to my ride as we go along it is a given. As I ride strictly alone (not by choice) it can be pretty loud at times. No one around to hear me except for the critters, or the occasional car/truck going by at 70+.

All these names are great, mine are not so imaginative. Just what came to mind and fits the bike. One of my most prized possesions, my Trek Project One road bike (second one, since I crashed and broke the first one), I call my baby. And she's yellow, so Yellow Baby. My mtb is Clunky, not really her fault. It's mostly my riding that makes her Clunky. But she is a bit heavy and I would love a new, light model. My trusty old road bike is Muddy 'cause she goes out in all types of weather that I won't take Yellow Baby out in. I have a borrowed Cannondale touring bike. Can't name it since it's not mine. If I like it, perhaps I'll have one someday. And that's my bike stable for now. They are all dear to me! And I definitely talk to them (and myself) when I am out riding, especially when I'm alone. Sometimes (on good days) it feels like they are extensions of me so talking to them comes naturally.

my bike names are pretty self-explanatory. my cruiser/workhorse- of- a- bike is Chunky-Green, since it's green and very heavy (VERY!!), aka the Chunkster :)... my road bike is Lean-Green (Riding Machine :)) since it's also green and quite a lot lighter than the cruiser. I just got a mtn bike for my b-day about a week ago, so it doesn't have a name yet... it's "carbon" colored (kind of a charcoal gray with a matte finish)... any suggestions?

i specifically don't give my bikes gender.... nor my car (which is simply "Buggy" or "Slug-Bug" among other variations), i think i'd feel funny if i gave them too human-like names :p although the plant my roomie and i share (really it's her's) is named "Phil" (short for Philium... dont ask :p) and is definitely a boy... and i've rambled enough :D

My new road bike is Kandy Mango. she is sleek, sexy and tropical fruit flavored so I named her Carmen Miranda (remember the fruit bowl hat lady?!!!) ok, I'm old but I like it!

My bike's name is Maus.
I decided on it when Ry was watching a history channel special on the crazy war machines the Germans came up with in WWII. The Maus was a tank that weighed 100+ tons (estimated) and had tracks as wide as an entire Panzer tank. It was so heavy, if parked on cement, it would crush the cement, and if driven on the ground, it would sink in over a foot. It took 50 people to operate, and had a ship's gun mounted as its main gun... They only built one because it proved so huge it was just rediculous to try to continue to manufacture them.
It seems to fit my huge, heavy Huffy, painted flat OD Green. That and feels kind of smart a$$, calling such a big thing 'maus'. =) My next bike will likely be the 'mauser' unless it speaks to me in other directions. =)

I'm not 100% sure, but I think my new Sugar's name is Fred.

My husband and I were discussing the cost/benefit analysis of a bunch of bikes at once, and we kept confusing each other with our terms. Finally I said, "Let's call the sugar I saw at the store Fred, to simplify things."

It worked ...

Both of my bikes have names...

My ole Terry is named Faithful, because no matter what I still have a blast on that ole machine. My new sleek Trek is called Thin Lizzy because it is an OCLV carbon 5200 and weighs under 16
pounds...and it is sleek black/smoke gray with camo black/white/grey handlebar tape...she sure is purity...and Yes, both both of my bikes are female...Terry for obvious reasons and Trek because it is WSD!

Karen ... my road ride is also a Trek 5200 WSD. What a terrific road bike (I have to clarify that 'road' part so my mountain bike doesn't feel like I'm showing a preference ;)

My mountain bike is a Trek 4900 WSD named Iris and my 5200 is Doro-thy ... she finally told me her name after my 'boys' gave me a pair of outrageous red Sidi shoes. When I tried to name the bike Ruby (as in ruby slippers) she politely said ... she was Doro-thy and I could keep the shoes.

BTW ... I thought the Carmen Miranda name after Kandy Mangoe was VERY creative!:D

I named by Trek 5200 WSD Fuji Floral bike Makani - Hawaiian for wind. Sometimes I feel like she's pushing me along like the wind and other times she's a headwind.

So, I came late to the party and I'm trying to catch up...

I see nobody left any chips in the bowl...

In general, I refer to all my rides as my "ponies" cause I'm a cowgirl at heart. Then they get a proper name so I can blame them personally for my sore butt.

Anyway, my old TREK1000 was "RoadKill"; more a reflection of how I felt rather then the performance of the bike. It came about due to this little miniature Barbie doll a friend and I found while out on a run. It's hair was all a-frazzle; it had one arm and looked like a truck had run over it 100 times. The doll was dubbed RoadKill Barbi. I had just started training for the AidsRide and my body wasn't co-operating... I felt like that Barbie. So I tie-wrapped her to my head tube, much like the maidenhead on a ship, where many miles later she still is.

My motorcycle (Kawasaki ZX-6) was "Skeeter". She just went to a new home.

My spanky new bike, Specialized Allez Comp in the zebra outfit hasn't got her name yet, but I'm working on it.

Now, I've seen some posts in other topics that lead me to believe there are some new bikes out there. Come on grrls... what did you name the baby? :D

It started on pretty tricky woodland singletrack behind my apartment. My hubby's bike had decided to die on him, and I said I wanted to go for one more quick run through the maze-like trails. My hubby refers to me/my looks as 'elfin, or pixie-like' so I was dubbed something of a woodland pixie. My attitude, however, does NOT fit this, and after tackling him into a tree once for calling me his 'little pixie' on a very difficult and frustrating part of this trail, I was re-named "B*tchcakes" which I rather enjoy (one of those names your friends and loved ones can call you, but no one else can...) so While I'm on this ride, he hears my pretty new rockhopper snapping twigs and whirring through the sand and rattling over stones... As I yip and fly through the curtain of raspberries that marks the end of the trail, he bows and says "Hail B*tchcakes, the woodland fairy who flies through the forest on boots and wheels!"

Loooong story short, my black, petite, but workhorseish '04 rockhopper's name is '*****cakes' and I'm looking forward to getting a little fairy-type toy and giving it GI Joe's tough clothes, boots, and strapping it to B*tchcakes' handlebars as a little figurehead to guide me through the trails.

I've named my Mondonico the "lavendar menace", she's a subtle lavendar metalic color (looks silver except in the light). None of my other bikes including TREK 420 namesake were named, none of my cars etc so this is a first.

"My little pony"? Is that one of those horses on a stick?

Cute, but really out there for aerodynamics... plus with a head that big on a zebra striped bike, the town animal control might come after me for keeping a farm animal in a residential area. :D

You aren't the only one catching up!

I call my Specialized Allez Sport "The Envelope" because that is what it feels like riding. I went from my "Chunky Monkey" Nishiki (does that brand even exist anymore?) mountain bike to the road bike. The transition is much the same as when I went from quarter horses and barrel racing to Arabians and endurance racing. (Like going from riding a butane tank to a fish!) There is just no comparision between mountain biking desert fields to road biking. Road biking scared me so much I put about 30 miles on The Envelope when I bought it last year and closeted it until I got braver. Now I am a speed demon roadie addict. Never thought I'd see the day.......

Oh, BTW, The Envelope is all black as was my little Arabian, Koltar. Coincidence? Karma? Who knows why things happen the way they do.

See if this works...It's not a very close picture of the Mondonico, I'll get a closer one but the bike in the foreground with the "1740" sticker on it is "the menace".

My origonal bike was a freebie, steel frame trek 500 that was too long and sooooo painful on long rides I began refering to it as the iron maiden, after the medival torture devise. My new lemond also a steel frame fits great but is so heavy It also seems to have inherited the name but this time with a smile becuse I love it so.

and the mountain bike is Baxter.
