important recall!

i actually saw the stem recall on a poster at the bike store... but did a quick look at specialized's site... and found this


In conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Specialized has issued a voluntary recall on the S-Works Carbon bicycle stem with Magnesium Faceplate. The stem appeared as original equipment on the following 2006 model year bicycles:

Allez Pro
Roubaix Pro
S-Works Roubaix
S-Works Tarmac
Tarmac Pro
S-Works Transition

The magnesium faceplace may crack or break, causing the rider to lose control, fall and suffer injuries.
To receive a free aluminum faceplace, contact an Authorized Specialized Dealer or Specialized at (877) 808-8154.

you don't have to go back to your old bike.... just switch skewers temporarily.... that's what i did.... hubby had a set of skewers.. .and just put a different on on my front wheel until i got my new dura-ace one!

You know i mentioned this to my husband and he seems to think you can't do this. Should I argue this issue?

YES! and you only need to switch out the front one! cuz there's nothing wrong with the rear one... but for peace of mind... just change the front skewer... sure they won't match for a while (the temp one i was using was black! all my components... including skewers... are silver!)

(i'm assuming both bikes are road bikes... same size tires!)

You know i think they are the same size but my husband is my tech and built my bikes. So he would know better. He is fishing right now so i can't ask him till he gets back. I hope soon cause i am itching to call shimano and get this taken care of. Sence you were on back order with yours. How long did it take for you to get yours? We got our notice in the mail Friday of coarse it was after 5 pm.

week and a half? two weeks? something like that!

and calling shimano directly was USELESS! i tried 3 or 4 different times... and each time they told me i HAD to go to a bike shop (not MY bike shop..... ANY bike shop that sells shimano)... they they would verify it's, indeed, a recalled skewer.... and order me a new one...... at one point... they did say they were going to send me an ultegra until the shop got my dura-ace cuz i had a ride coming up (didn't tell them i had another skewer that i was using)... but it's never arrived... so they lied to get me off the phone!

if your old bike is a road bike... it's probably got 700 X 23 wheels! so you'll be good to go! i know i didn't want to ride my old dolce! lol! especially not with ride around the bear coming up (well... past now... but it was done with the replacement skewer!)

hey WAIT!?! you got a letter in the mail? from the bike shop? or from shimano? i never got a letter! the only reason i knew (and i even told my bike shop about it way before shimano told them about it!) was cuz i read it in a newsletter (roadbikerider)!

From shimano. Not the lbs. I am not sure but I think it is cause my husband bought the parts directly from them. Now I am worried that this is going to be a pain. it is not only my bike but my BF too. My husband built both our bikes. And my friend doesn't have a pin to replace her's temp. Her old bike is a over 20 year old rock hopper. Imagine going from a brand new bick back to riding your over 20 year old commuter bike? She is not going to happy!

I got my bike in March of 05. So I'm in the clear (thankfully). Thanks for posting the recall. I hadn't heard of it prior. I must live in a cave :D

I hadn't heard about this and I'd bet money that my skewers are the ones in the recall (I'll have to check when I get home tonight). Looks like another trip to the LBS is in order....
