Yes, we didn't use the soft cases for carrying; they have no padding and the sharp parts of the bike would just bang against your body! But they were great for keeping the grease off the trunk of our small rental car (Ford Focus) and quicker/less bulky than the hard cases would have been. We left the hard cases in NC at my Mom's house and just packed the bikes back into them with all the parts wrapped and well padded at the end of our trip. So there's a time and place for both types of cases. :)
