We lived in J ville for three years. One year we had about 8" of snow for Christmas eve. Onslow county shut down for 4 days. At that point they only had one country snow plough plus a couple of hum vees with tractor blades lashed on. It took them that long just to clear the roads enough for people to get to the grocery store. Perhpas some on the people in the grocery stores remember that. Even in Boston we used to see the clear the shops of bread, chips, soda and milk. Around here the same phenomenon occurs every time they think a hurricane might come withing a few hundred miles.

Thing is the roads never had any accumulation on them at all. You mean to tell me people wouldn't drive over a small amount of snow? As long as there isn't any ice under snow isn't an issue to drive on. I learned how to drive in the snow before learning how to drive on dry roads. I've driven on that much snow in a car before, then again I also drove through a white out to get home from college one day. The same happens in the Charlotte area as well and they have several snow plows and a bunch of salt trucks. I will never understand this phenomenon. I also don't get it with the hurricanes either, and this summer is the closest I've ever actually been to one of those.

I think this is the most snow sc has seen in the past 20 years. I had some people up the street ask me how to make a snowman with fluffy snow! (Spraybottle.) My bf couldn't get out of our driveway today. So we have a nice day off of work together.

Yes. You may have learned to drive in snow, but those of us who grew up in the south mostly did not. When it snows, we stay home. Most of central and eastern North Carolina get more ice than snow anyways, and NO ONE should drive on the ice.

If there's no need to go out, why go out? When in Rome...

My mother in Asheville has over a foot now. In my part of the world, it's supposed to start tonight but mostly be ice. I'm going out before it starts to get food for my dog. But I will not be going out once it starts.

I drove south down to Florida the day after Christmas - it was a long snow covered drive all the way trough south carolina. It was surreal. Then the temps were getting down in the 30s at night camping in the everglades.

Yes, it's quite rare in Jacksonville (NC)! My brother sent snow photos from Wilmington today, where it's even rarer. We got just a dusting here in Chapel Hill, farther north and west. Strange snow event!

Edited to say - sorry, I didn't realize this was an old post. But today was a bit of a repeat as southern NC (both SE and SW) got more snow than we did farther north!

We just got snow here today, too. What's odd is that it's our first snow of the season. We usually get our first snow well before the first of the year. I think we ended up with around 4 inches. It's a beautiful fluffy snow. I took my dog to the park early this morning and she really had a blast. Here she'd just finished plowing around and pulled her nose out of the snow . . . (she's a little camera shy but she'd been running around with her nose in the snow, nearly up to her eyes . . . )

Tulip, living in the Northeast made me very cynical about this "knowing how to drive in snow" business. What people mainly know how to do is wait till their street is plowed. And quite a few people drive very, very, very badly in snow.

I grew up in the South and I drive far better in snow than most of them. Of course, my parents did believe in going to the mountains when it snowed, so I got a bit of practice! Nonetheless, there is no real mystery to driving in snow.

Ice is another matter entirely, of course, and in my experience, ice storms are commoner in the South.

Indeed! Iced in today in Chapel Hill...glad I can work from home. I have no interest in driving on ice.

Woot woot the snow has begun in Philly! Not too bad yet only time will tell:D This stuff looks like slick snow.

It does, doesn't it? I just walked the dog and was slipping around with just a few flakes so far. Tomorrow should be fun.

We returned yesterday from snow country in the Rockies -- methinks it's around -25 degrees C or -13 degrees F. tonight.

Some snowfluffies in a few days. Doesn't matter. It's the 'cold' that gets me.

I cancelled dinner with some friends this evening 'cause it was a 45 min drive either way. I like driving in the snow and have awd, so it's not bad - I just don't trust all the other idiots on the road to not careen into me and decided it wasn't worth risking.

I understand that one. I was leaving the gym last night and some ding-wing in front of me didn't understand you can't gun your car on a hill in the slick snow and not slide, geez. They spun out and ended up against almost touching the hillside, lol. I was kinda amused actually :D.
