nscrbug, I SOOOOO feel your pain! I'm less than 50 miles from my goal of 5000 miles. We've had over 28" of snow in the last 10 days. Those last few miles are going to have to be indoor miles. :( I hate indoor miles! bikerHen

The mileage you've done is quite impressive, but if you are so close and it means a lot to meet your goal, then I would be calling in sick from work tomorrow to get an 82 mile ride in before the snow starts falling. (Be sure to ride AWAY from the office:D)
I want to be on the "look on the brightside" group.
But I get it. A goal is a goal.
I also think that when you set big goals, it becomes terrifying to think you are going to miss it. It is not a random number, it is a number you set and worked towards.
I am firmly in the "get on the trainer" or "leave work" or "ride in the snow" or "go the the gym and spin on a boring bike" group.
Yes, enjoy the accomplishment of what you have done, and then go find a way (ANY way) to get the last 82 done. There's still time in 2010.
Thank you for "getting it"...I was afraid that some folks might miss the point of my post. Of course I am delighted and proud of my accomplishments on the bike this year. But like you said - "a goal is a goal" and I tend to be a tad bit neurotic when it comes to setting a mileage goal. Rest assured, I WILL find some way to complete those last 82 miles before Dec. 31...preferably outside on the road. ;)
I'm here for you! Join the type-a-motivated-by-a-goal support group :D
Some people ride for the sake of riding. Some people need a goal. Some people need a race and competition. Not better than the others, just different.
I too am part of the goal group (with a splash of competition and a pinch of the "for pleasure" group).
You WILL figure out how to get it done, and you will feel a great sense of accomplishment when you do (and that's ok!).
Then, you will know what to do for next year!
About 5 years ago, I missed my goal by 99 miles. Although I was riding indoors, etc. I didn't count any of that. I was upset, so I understand, but I am much more relaxed about my goals now. So, while I have reached my goals each year since, I scaled back a bit for a couple of years, because I didn't want to disappoint myself. This year I set an "acceptable" goal and a "reach" goal. I have achieved both, with time to spare, so now I know what I am capable of. But, I have to say, weather played a big part in this. It was warm and dry this year.
I used to be the one bummed over an A-, grad school is curing me of that, quickly.
Be glad you were healthy enough to go and knock out an amazing amount of miles like that. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I'm proud of you even if you are not! :D:D:D
I can understand your disappointment and frustration but the year is not over yet. The last time I looked December had 31 days- it may be snowing now but you've still got time or am I missing some point?
Either way, you will get it done.
thank you for the clarification, context makes all the difference and I am glad to hear that your dissapointment is more weather related than self esteem related because you have a major accomplishment to celebrate.
I totally get the part about missing a goal and become frustrated if I don't make a personal deadline and so forth. I tend to being driven and was really really ticked off and bugged in a major when falling short, but as I have gotten older there is much more appreciation of the journey and less focus on the destination.
With your determination and enthusiam I bet you do get to your magic number! Then we can all celebrate :D
there is only one reasonable solution..... road trip
throw the bike on the car and start heading south
Purdyd for the win! Road trip!
Congrats on getting close :) And good luck on finishing up your goal.
hmmm, we could organize a mass migration of chilly TE members to some balmy southern location with scenic roads and calm winds :D
