OMG, I can only imagine how bad a seat might stink! Mine smells like Cocoa Butter because currently I'm using Queen Helene Cocoa Butter lotion as chamois cream. Earlier in the season, it smelled like baby lotion. I have no idea why I know what my saddle smells like. I swear I don't sniff it regularly or anything.
I'm cracking up reading this, but realize that it is likely a serious problem. Makes it hard for me to refrain from going and checking mine.

I just don't do sniff tests. Of anything. Period. If in doubt, I wash, whether it looks clean or not, or throw it out. But why is it after Dh sniffs something unpleasant, he has the need to call me over to prove to me how stinky something is? I've already witnessed his reaction and believe him wholeheartedly, yet he adamantly insists that I share in the experience. Is that a guy thing? Or is there something wrong with him? I suspect the latter.:p

I wonder if (besides the issues that spring immediately to mind) it has something to do with how you sit on the saddle. If your -ahem- smelly parts are far enough from the saddle, then less of a problem.
One of my riding buddies, who's not even particularly thin, sits so high on his saddle that I can literally see through his cut-out when I ride behind him. I'm guessing his saddle does smell like roses. Not that I've checked. :cool:

All three saddles (two mine and one bf's) smell more or less like new saddles. They have all been ridden for at least a season, one for about three years. Maybe the cover material makes a difference? These are all synthetic leather (Fizik microtex).
hmm, maybe someone needs to start a saddle smelling poll?
would the Original Poster please tell us what kind of saddle that was? Leather, plastic, foam?
Mine's leather. No smell. But I can bet a padded seat that doesn't dry out after a ride could really smell, ie. hot garage (see the camelbak thread :confused:). I know my jerseys don't smell pretty after a ride. And my sister has forgotten to wash her gloves--wish I'd been there for that accidental sniff.
I agree--a no sniff policy is best--but you guys broke me down :D
Ohmygod! Ive been recovering from a sprained neck and inflamed shoulder tendoncombo plus chronbic fatigue attack AND mutiple colds( and its too damn cold to ride outside or Id be crying my eyes out missing my cycle!)- and this cheered me up!
Apparently, from what I am told( as I dont get too close to most cyclist men, Im too slow!) alot of guys dont wash their shorts as much as the girls.

I never noticed any smells emanating from my seats so I couldn't resist and had a sniff test.
I have a Brooks that I've had for some time now (18 months?) and I'm happy to say it smells just as it did when I got it - like leather.
I don't use chamois and just commute with whatever I'm wearing that day so I guess it never gets much of a chance to get funky.
I'm pretty sure that wanting other people to share in the experience of sniffing an obnoxious odor is a guy thing. Jeff Foxworthy did a whole routine on this being a difference between men and women on the Blue Comedy Tour (or maybe the BCT rides again). I believe the routine is called "Courtesy Sniff." You know, a guy will get something out of the refrigerator that has blue fuzzy stuff growing on it, will take a big whiff of it, and make a big face. He'll then present it to a guy friend, and invite him to take a sniff. The friend will do it after watching his face, and a third guy will do the same thing. It's actually very funny. :p
